For those running in the cold, look up "neck gators" or balaclavas. Good ones are made from synthetic material that doesn't absorb much moisture, but does help. Most people should be able to run down into the low 20s with a balaclava and good jacket, gloves and tights.

You do get more used to it. Just try breathing through your nose as much as possible and blow snot as it builds up. Gross yes, but it does work.

What do you all use to keep your chin warm? It's the only thing on me that gets cold.

I grabbed one of these from my local lululemon, and it's great.
I can tuck it over my chin and pull it tight if needed...

I would email runDisney. Historically, there have not been any late releases or last minute sales of entries... but that does not mean that they cannot accommodate a transfer. Do it now if you plan to as the corral seeding and bib assignment will occur very soon.

With regard to can you do it? I find that motivated runners can do much more than they would ever think. With your current long run of 14 you could run a full this weekend. I am not recommending this and it would not be a fun run as your mind will work to convince you to stop. If you ran 16 the weekend following the W&D, then 10 - 18 - 10 - 20 - 10 - 20 - 10 and 10 I think that gets you into marathon the following week. (Sorry on a poor computer at the moment and not able to flip over to a calendar)

Again, email or call runDisney and plead your case.

ooh! I will try that! And that sounds doable (scary! but doable!) Thank you!

The training plan we're using (Hal Higdon Novice 1) has us at 13 mi so far, so it's completely feasible!

Woohoo! Thanks!

A Jenny Hadfield plan user here - excited and a little nervous as my long run this weekend takes me into new territory ..... a 14 miler :dance3:

Can't believe we are 2 weeks from Thanksgiving, less than 6 weeks from Christmas and 65 days until the full!!!

So I stupidly re-twisted my ankle on Monday (trying to sit down on the floor with my Girl Scout troop). I heard a pop and now I feel like I'm back to square one on my healing time. Maybe not quite square 1. I finally made an appointment with my doctor and hope to get a referral for PT so I can work on strengthening this ankle. It's been two weeks since I've been able to really run (I had my attempt at the hot chocolate 15k that turned into a 5k walk).

Am I going to make it to being able to run the marathon? It doesn't hurt today (it was burning a bit yesterday) and the swelling is noticeably down. I am supposed to run 20 miles (Galloway plan) this weekend but that is obviously out for now. I think I'll be okay since Galloway has you going to 26 miles so ideally if I get to 23 I would be fine and even 20 would probably be okay. My longest run so far is 17. I still have two months. Just frustrating. I think I have hope though. Right?!?!?

I got hit by a bicycle on November 28, 2011, and ran the marathon on January 10, 2013. It was an hour slower than I wanted but I finished.

Funny, I have run ten or so marathons and almost tripple that number of halfs, but I still vividly remember the first time I ran 14 miles. It seemed like such a big number for some reason. Enjoy it.

Same Ankle? That stinks to high heaven. I would actually us a word that resembles sox....

Yes by all means do not cancel out of the race. You are more than ready to run it now - but you just do not know it. Go to the doc and get some PT but also discuss a bracing strategy for the 2 months between today and race day. I am thinking you will need 2-3 weeks off to be assured of healing. You may want to discuss a cortisone or other anti-inflammatory to get you well past the swelling.

Talk with the PT about performing work on an unstable platform. This is one of the best ways to strengthen the smaller stabilizer muscles and core. Strong core = bullet (injury) proofing.

Once you can get out, we need to evaluate where you are physically. I would look to ramp up to a distance between 16 and 20 miles the week of Christmas. Feel free to PM me once you get some idea as to the exact nature of the current injury and the amount of time the doc wants you to heal. I can help map out a path that will get you to the line and ready for the race. It will not be at full Galloway distances - but it will get you through the day and allow you the chance to cross the line with the SMILE.

I was thinking the same. Then once I completed the 16 mile run--- I thought about how short a 10 mile run was.

It is all relative

Thanks Charles. I will definitely be asking for assistance on this. Your last sentence made me well up a little. I would love nothing more than to cross that finish line with a smile :)

And yes, it was the same ankle. When I went to sit down and put my foot underneath me (to be criss-cross applesauce), I overbent it and heard the pop. My guess is that it was steal weak and overly flexible. I had one choice words that had my Daisies staring at me in shock. I had to apologize quickly and mention I had a "****ie" which then elicited fits of giggles until I realized what I had said. Boo boo! I mean boo boo!

So I bought an ankle brace last week to give me some stability in my attempt to run the hot chocolate. I found it too constricting and it hurt. By the time I took it off my foot was purple in a few places. I was following the package direction about tightness. I hope I don't have to put something on again that feels like that.

Thanks for the pep talk!

I agree with the part in bold. I sprained my ankle walking to class my freshman year of college :headache: :headache: (feel free to make fun...:lmao:) and one of my PT exercises was to stand on one of these...I forget how long I had to stand on it since this happened 10 years ago, but I remember it really being an eye-opener as to how weak that ankle was.

@rocio best wishes for a safe and speedy recovery!! :thumbsup2

No making fun from me. I was trick or treating with my kids when it happened. Doh! I will ask about the unstable surface idea.

So true.

Was eating breakfast with my Dad yesterday morning and he was asking what kinda training I have to do race week (running W&D half this weekend). Not thinking of the way it came out, I said, "oh, its only 13 miles...that nothing." Yeah, he looked at me like I was crazy. I guess we all are to a point.

Amazing what the body gets accustomed to.

Yeah, I remember when a 10K was 'ridiculous' long! Then a Half was 'ridiculous' long! When my friend at church asked me about my next race, I said "It's only a Half, like a training run". He just shook his head and told me that I was nuts! :rotfl:

I have a 17 miler on schedule for tonight because I will be out of town for the weekend. This will be the furthest I have ever run other than the marathon in January. Not looking forward to getting home.

Glad I wasn't there only one to make those comments. And yes, we are nuts.

Too true. After running 50k's and a 50-miler, a marathon isn't all that bad.

I've done 50ks and a couple of 8 hour races. Haven't tried a 50 miler yet, but I kind of want to do one in 2013, if I can find time for it.
