I thought I would post on this thread since I am running my first WDW Half Marathon in Jan 2013.

I have been lurking on here a bit, but its good to get to know everyone before the big day.

I am running this with ADP and I can't wait to meet more people.

Pray for me Wishers! DH and I are on our way to Chicago (well, Marseilles, IL) to run the Midwest Super Spartan race which is 8-10 miles of wet, muddy, cold obstacle racing!!!! Should be about 34 degrees at the start!

:scared1: Will do. Supposed to be 88 and sunny at my house. :beach:

In prep for the first half of Goofy, I've been upping my mileage over the last couple weeks and am feeling pretty tired. Hopefully I can be motivated to keep it up over the next couple months. Last week was 50 miles, this week 56. I don't see how Elites can do 100-120 miles/week. I guess you get used to it.

Enjoy! I've done Tough Mudders, I'm thinking about of trying Spartan, please post how you like it.

Hey all, I'm assuming at the expo, you're unable to pick up anyone else's packet for them??

I'm pretty sure you can, you just need a copy of there confirmation.

I think you can if you have a copy of their ID and a form that says you can pick of for them. I recall something like that when I ran the Princess this year.

On a sucky note. I was trick-or-treating with the kids tonight (special date downtown) and I tripped on uneven sidewalk and twisted my ankle. Sigh. At least there's plenty of time to recover and get back to it. Doh!

Have you done this one before? Does it start and end near the boardwalk? I could probably talk DH into taking me if he could gamble while I walk : )
Does anyone know times from this event would be to early to count towards the 2014 princess?

I haven't run it before. I believe it begins near Bally's and the course heads south through Ventnor and Margate. You could definately use the time for Princess 2014. For this year's you could submit a time from as far back as July 2010. I actually used the same 10K I used for this past year's since I wan't able to do a 10K this year. Although I have 2 halfs I could use but I think my 10K time would get me into a better corral.

YAY We could be HF sisters! I am currently the first level but after my Spring races I will be level 2, by the skin of my teeth! I am running 8 Halfs in exactly 365 days, lol

That's awesome Kim! If I had done the half on Sandy Hook I probably could have done Half Fanatics now but the bank account and the rest of life just wasn't working out. :sad2: Alright, you all convinced me, I'll shoot for Half Fanatic for spring. I would love to be able to 13 halfs in 13 months, but running that distance is just not fun in July and August. Blech! :crazy2:

That's right. The form will be posted on rundisney.com (if it's not there already)...they sign it authorizing their proxy to pick it up. You just need that along with a copy of their ID and you're good to go. ETA: as minniebeth pointed out below you also need a copy of their signed waiver. I picked up my brother's packet last year and it was pretty easy...they even let me change his corral since I had a print-out of an updated time from a race he'd run.

@rocio - sorry about the ankle. I mildly sprained mine last year during training (turned it during a run) and after a few days of rest it was okay. Hope the same happens for you.

Thank you! I am checking it out now. I think DH would enjoy the alone time with the one arm bandits

That's correct for picking up packets for others... You need 3 things for each runner/packet:
1. Runner's signed waiver
2. Copy of their license
3. Signed Authorization waiver for you to pick their packet up

They will have the forms online to downtown and print with final race instructions email and on the website.
They DO check the forms carefully and collect the 2 waivers.
If you're picking packets up for others, don't forget to do the bib verification for them!

Rocio, I'm sorry about your ankle and hope it heals quickly!

Thanks for the info!! I knew I would get a quick response from you guys!! My SIL doesn't know if she and her family can get there early enough with the price of flights, and truthfully, I figured since it said you must attend the expo to get your packet, you couldn't have anyone else get it for you. Glad you all proved me wrong. ;)

hi everyone - hope the training is going well for you all!

what have you done in the past for shin pain? after my 17 mile training run (which i did on shoes that were too old:rolleyes1) my shins have been killing me. i took almost a full week off of running and they still hurt. i did 5 miles on the treadmill with new shoes. the first mile the shins hurt and then after they felt ok. and now today they are sore again.

can someone recommend stretches? or, should i ice/heat? or is there anything else to ease the pain either before, during, or after the run? they are both very sore :(

Start wearing compression sleeves/socks during and/or after your runs... It will help tremendously. Icing after running will also help.

Rocio with the sprained ankle here. Thanks for the kind thoughts.

I've had ankle sprains before but not as a runner. How long should I expect to not run? It is not too swollen, but I can't put much weight on that foot. Not too painful though. So I don't think it's a bad sprain. I was planning to run the Chicago Hot Chocolate 15k a week from tomorrow. Should I even consider running/walking/hobbling it? I was looking forward to the race but I rather be better for the marathon in January. Thoughts?

I am doing RICE and Advil.

I just signed up this morning. I am feeling a little like oh no what did I do. But I figure it will be just a practice for the princess.

Going to be tough to get out there today. Rain, rain and more rain, and really no clearing to be seen. Temps in the mid-50s. I did 5 yesterday and want to do 10 today. We'll see how far I get.

Well I survived the Midwest Super! I ended up 7th for females in the Elite heat which isn't bad but I was hoping for a couple places higher! Anyway, it was a very challenging course but mostly because it was so cold and we were wet/muddy the entire time. It got to the point I was just so numb all over and it was hard to make my muscles work. I ended up doing 120 burpees for slipping off a balance log, the traverse wall, the spear throw, and the rope climb. I have done many obstacle course races and mud runs but have to say Spartan Races are definitely the best! Very challenging but rewarding and the people are great!

So sorry you're having to deal with this! For me, part of it was that my shoes were worn out, but it took 3-4 runs after getting new shoes for my shins to get back to normal. I also invested in a foam roller and started rolling my calves at night and also just before running and bought a pair of compression socks to wear during recovery. (I wore them once for a long run but didn't feel like they made a big difference, and they are awful at wicking/staying dry.) Another thing to try are the same sort of stretches they recommend for plantar fasciitis.

Hope you feel better! Shin issues are really frustrating.
