Hello All,

I hope you don't mind me popping in and asking a question. Just signed up for 1/2 yesterday and super excited! My first Disney and I'm pumped about the "flatness":goodvibes Done many races and they all seem to have a huge hill at the end (especially the fulls.) There is one hill on the bridge right?? Also, the registration said something about discounts on tickets and lodging but when I called CM they said no. Anyone know anything about that? Thanks in advance!

I can't remember about any hills except overpasses and coming into international gateway.

The discount tickets & rooms are through GET travel, you'll have to call them. The phone number can be found on the runDisney website under travel details.

So there are discounted park tickets available? I though they didn't do this for Marathon Weekend :confused3 I'll have to check this out! Thanks!

You are right. I wasn't thinking when I posted the reply. The quote said tickets & rooms so I just put tickets & rooms as well. I don't remember seeing anything about discounted tickets.

Other hill as you approach the Contemporary Resort and go under the canal bridge. I think most people find that last overpass heading to Epcot the worst.

Just finished my first triathalon yesterday. My original intent was to use the cross training to get me through the heat of the summer and then continue with my marathon training plan, but I actually liked doing the triathalon even with though the 15mile bike portion was like climbing Mt. Everest.:scared:
I'm sure I'll do another one at some point, but now it's time to focus on getting that awesome Mickey medal. :thumbsup2

Keep up the training everyone and stay healthy!!

Awesome! How long was the swim?

I have been a little busy so it took me a while to catch up on all the posts!:upsidedow

On the Gatorade issue-I can't take Gatorade or Powerade, both make me sick to my stomach. I have been using Cytomax with good results. It like it best when its really cold, so I freeze it in my bottles and it melts while I am on the long runs. Works out well.

I have been having trouble keeping up with my running as life keeps getting in the way. But today I did my longest run ever, 17.5 miles. 3:19:52. I am using the 9/2 run walk strategy and it has worked out really well. I am trying to get at least 2 runs during the week and the 2 on the weekend, but sometimes I just can't get it done. My first marathon is in October, and then I have time to reassess and gear up for Goofy.

Disney is FLAT - with the noted exceptions.......

here are the bumps in the road and where they are located....

Mile 1.5 - Overpass - No one ever speak of this one since it is in the dark and the first couple miles

Mile 4.7 - Viaduct under Seven Seas Lagoon - The steepest climb on property

Mile 5.3 - Entering backstage MK - under the RR track then up over the Utilidorors Floor.

Mile 10.5 - Start of the 'clover leak' right hand turn - turning 270 degrees and climbing up to the overpass over World Dr.

Mile 11.2 - Same hill as mile 1.5

Mile 11.5 - A sharp right then over the bus exit bridge. - feels a lot worse than it is.

Mile 12.2 - OK really not anything but the slight change of elevation up to Spaceship Earth. More mental than hill

Note - all but the Seven Seas viaduct are <4 percent inclines and gentle freeway style over passes. The viaduct is about a 5 percent incline. Honestly, if trained the biggest issue is that these inclines narrow at the bridge making a slight road block as the middle part of the race goes through.

Here is a map that you can look at.

Congrats!! I hope to someday cross a triathlon (maybe a mini one) off my bucket list.

I did 13 yesterday--I lucked out since it was 75 with low humidity. I took my Garmin and mapped it out ahead of time so I knew I was definitely doing 13. The first 9 were great--the last 4 not so much. I stopped, I drank water, okay I chugged an entire bottle of water, got really bad stomach pains, said "There's no way I'm doing 9 and not going all the way to 13," beat myself further along, then proceeded to curse the godforsaken hills that surround my home.

It was, shall we say, somewhat unpleasant towards the end. I have the Disneyland half two weeks from today, so next week will just be maybe 8 miles. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do after this to get ready for the full? I scheduled in some affordable 1/2 marathons (an Oktoberfest one at the end of October, the Jersey Shore 1/2 end of Sept. for only $27) in lieu of long runs, but should I just keep 8-10 miles as my long run until the training long runs catch up with the runs I'm doing now?

So, no water for 9 miles or just got to the point where you had a bottle available? If the former, one really needs to drink more often. Regardless, this sounds like a case of overloading the gut with the bottle of water. Try drinking a little more per hour and not chugging. You will do much better.

With regard to the what to do between now and when you catch you marathon training program... You can go either way. I would suggest alternating 6 one week with 10 the other week until you catch your training plan. Once on the plan, go with the plan even if it feels like you may be backtracking a bit. The alternative is to take a couple weeks for recovery and then catch up again. Depending on how hard you run DL, this may be the preferred approach. Play it by ear.

With regard to the planned halves, just lay them into the schedule. Hopefully they are not on a week where your plan says 20. If it turns out that your planned halves are on a longer weekend DO NOT try to catch up mileage. Just run the half and then hop back on schedule.

I just came across this and thought I'd share because I thought I needed to hear it so maybe some other people do too. Here's the Link and here's what it says:

"Over 40 years of marathon training and racing, I've learned two things that I consider critically important that bear repeating. The first: Don't get as fit as you can; get as healthy as you can. And second: Run with confidence.

The first refers to many runners' quest for the ultimate marathon training program. They believe they need to get in lots of miles, lots of long runs, and lots of tempo runs. It's an intimidating prospect, and it has a negative side effect worth avoiding. All that training can temporarily reduce your immunity, and you might catch a cold just at the point where you should be tapering off and getting stronger. That's why I advise many marathoners to do less training, not more, and to focus on their overall health as well as their perfect training program.

Second, the marathon is 50 percent physical and 90 percent mental. You have to do the training to succeed, but you also have to have confidence in yourself and your training if you are to run a smart race (with an even-pace strategy, or even negative splits). Without such confidence, the sheer immensity of the marathon can prove overwhelming. So, believe in yourself. If you've done 75 percent of the training, you're 100 percent ready." — Amby Burfoot

*applause* thanks for posting this!!! I am sure Burfoot knows what he's talking about. :)

Thank you!! They'd actually take the place of 10 miles and 12 miles, so not much deviation from the suggested amount. It's just so much easier to get through the long runs when they're not the same 1 mile stretch of road back and forth 10 times...

I know Disney is technically flat but does anyone else get the feeling towards the end of a newly long distance that everything is uphill regardless of how flat it is? Or is that just me? Probably just me.

No! Not just you. I felt the same way. The last three miles of the Princess half were tough! I also ran the Broad Street Run and felt like that was uphill and it's the flattest race I've ever ran!

Congratulations! I did my first triathlon 2 years ago, and now I am training for a half Ironman! It is addictive. My race is at the end of September, so I will be kicking up the marathon training in October.
