Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

I saw this too and I'm thrilled. Not holding my breath though as I'm sure it'll change 9 more times.

Latest is weather for 1/12 75- 77 10% chance of showers.
Sounding better. Like you said it changes hourly here in FL.

I am at POR and doing the Half on Sat. Was thinking of meeting up with Liz to walk over in the AM. She mentioned you might be going over also. Do you have a time you think you will leave at. I have the map to get over there. I can be ready before 4 if needed.

Thanks.

Paula Radcliffe (marathon record holder) talked about how hard it was to avoid her baby when coming up on a big race. It is very real and should be taken seriously.

Having said that, I had my marathon PR after a bad flu at the half way point of what ended up as a four week taper (long story). The big down side is that I was supposed to run WDW in 2009 and had to cancel the whole vacation and run AZ RnR a week later.

Well, unfortunately it's too late for me. I was the first in the family to have any symptom. It was just mild enough that I didn't really put 2 and 2 together until my husband called to tell me there were kids throwing up a home. I finished what I was doing at work an came home. The girls have fevers now. I'll just lay in this recliner for now. I hope t blows through here quickly. A lot of my local friends have had stomach bugs in the last couple of weeks and they all seemed to be of the 24 hour variety so here's hoping.

On another note, I have to decide by tomorrow if I want to enter my first Irongirl sprint tri. It's not til August so I have plenty of time to train. Anyone have experience with a tri? Easy/difficult transition from just running?

I did my first sprint triathalon this past summer. I was a competitive swimmer all through my childhood, so the swimming part was just about conditioning for me. I found the biking to be the most challenging part. The course was like mountain climbing, so I felt undertrained as far as the biking went. TRIs do give you quite a sense of accomplishment at the finish line and the other athletes were very supportive of newbies to the sport. I say go for it!

Anyone deathly afraid of getting sick before the big day? I am trying to avoid people like the plague.:bitelip:

I have been feeling this way for weeks. Unfortunately, I'm a nurse practitioner in a family practice office, so all those sick people are coming to see me!!! Here's hoping my immunity from 20 years of nursing will hold out!:rotfl:

Are you ladies at French Quarter or Riverside? Can you walk from Riverside?

So I'm guessing that I just missed this, but where are spectators allowed for the Family 5K? My wife and sister are running the race, and I'm just now getting my act together to figure out where the kids and I can cheer them on. Do they open any part of Epcot for spectators, or does everyone have to be out in the parking lot portions of the course?

From the race instructions........

Disney Family Fun Run 5K Spectator Viewing
Spectators are encouraged to view the 5K start and finish
from the Imagine Lot at Epcot ®. There will be no viewing
areas along the course or from within Epcot ®.

I've been training with a Camelbak backpack and I'd like to use it during the race. Does anyone know of any reason why they wouldn't allow it? I e-mailed RunDisney to ask them but they never responded.

Ooh, good question - I hadn't even considered whether hydration packs wouldn't be allowed! I have a Nathan pack I love (and have been training with on my longer runs), and I was definitely planning on wearing it for the half...

:)

Well last time I posted I had a really bad cold and here's the update. I was feeling better and thought I was in the last stages. I just had a little cough at night and that was about it. I even got a few double digit runs in. However I woke up at about 2 this morning and felt horrible again so I went to the doctor and found out that I now have a bacterial sinus infection. Great way to start 2013.

I am now taking antibiotics the size of a horse pill (no joke I have to cut them in
half). So I am hoping that I feel better by next week. I'm not even worried about the race I will struggle though that I just don't want to be that person on the plane.

You're not flying in from NY are you? Just kidding, feel better.

OKW Marathon peeps, what time are you walking over to the start line? Or are you taking the bus? I'm all about the extra sleep but I don't know my way around OKW area enough to walk by myself.

I'll leave OKW around 4:30ish (depends on where my room is located).

POR is farther away from the corrals than POFQ, of course, so it's up to you if that's a doable walk.

You can run with the backpack but you have to stop at security to let them inspect at every park...

OK, just kidding ....Seriously, if you have trained with it and feel like you need it for the race, then by all means bring it. Do take a look at the race map and you will see that plenty of water stops are provided for the race. It's all about your comfort level at this point. The aid stations are not spaced very evenly in the first half of the race, but after that, they average about a mile apart.

This may be a stupid question, but my DH and I were wondering how many runners are running the half and how many are running the full marathon? This is his first, so it's all new to us.

In really round numbers

~ 15,400 Full
~ 17,600 Half

Then add ~ 10,100 Goofy runners.

I guess doing the math ~25,500 Full and ~27,700 Half total

On Monday, I would expect 18k finishers for either race. Disney has a lot of shrinkage between slots and actual runners/finishers

Not cool!!! Do you have any idea how hard it is to restart one's OWN heart???

OK. You got me good. I know the water stops are pretty good but I figured that since I've trained with it and I'm comfortable with it I'd give it a go. Besides, I don't think I'm coordinated enough to do the tapered dixie cup technique!!! Thanks for the info!
