Does anyone have any good tips for dealing with heat and humidity for those of us who come from colder climes? I am doing the half and starting in F corral so the sun will be up by the time I get to the MK. I wear a visor, carry my own water, wear sunscreen, pour the water over the head. Any other suggestions? Does anyone use cooling towels or something else? Any advice would be appreciated.![]()
There was a piece in Florida Running & Triathlon by Keith Brantly former Olympic marathon team member and he gives a little piece of advice. In the section he talks about watching the weather and if the start temp is >60 consider changing you race stragety. Mr. Brantly gives a combined number , greater than 130, for the heat and humdity that makes it less likely that one may run fast. His example is a temp of 55 and humidity of 80% to get 135 which would be high enough that you may need to adjust your race and hydration strategy.
So taking this into account...
#1) Slow up. For each 10F above 135 on the scale above, take 30 seconds or so off pace. Do this through the first half of the race and evaluate how you feel. You can always speed up if feeling like you have a handle on the heat, but cannot slow up once you realize you may have an issue
You have noted the other things I would add sunglasses, though the sun may not be bright enough by the time you finish... it will help with squinting in the section from mile 10-11.
