Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

Wow it was windy! 17 miles instead of 20. Really dealing with IT band pain. Walked more than I ran but I was able to do an average of 15:30 m/m so it wasn't much slower than if I did my run/walk.

The taper is here! I cannot wait for 3 mile training runs.

If you do not stretch or have a foam roller, get one. Your marathon effort will appreciate the loose IT band

I had my first race nightmare last night. Our party members were missing so DH decided not to race so he could watch our daughter, then later I met up with my friend on the course, but I couldn't run, was clawing the ground for traction, and then we got notified we were behind pace. Thankfully then I woke up. 12.5 miler to be done Christmas Eve and then on to the taper!!!! Hopefully these jitters go away! lol

As the t-shirt says, "This seemed like a good idea 5 months ago." That was rough, but I did it. I ran 20 miles! This after being sidelines for a month (most of Nov.). Coach Charles, I want to thank you again for your help figuring out a modified training plan for this last month. Thank you! I am glad I was able to get a 20 miler in before the marathon but now I'm left thinking, how will I do 6 more miles?!?!? Then again my last long run was 15 miles so I did about the same distance jump as then. I guess if I could do it today, I will be able to do it in 3 weeks.

Oh and I ran it mostly on the dreadmill. It was just too icy outdoors and the highs didn't seem high enough to melt the ice for tomorrow so I decided to hit the gym. I broke it up into 5 mile increments. So 5 miles on the treadmill, refill my water, 5 miles on the treadmill, 5 miles on the indoor track (45 laps, joy!), and the last 5 miles on the treadmill.

My ankle still complains here and there, but no pain so my PT was okay for me to keep going. Okay, I'm off to rest or walk or drink. Something to make me feel less achy ;)

Wait until you are in the middle of taper and wishing you had to go out and run!
The dreams can be much more intense

You are very welcome. Rest assured that the remaining 10k will go by just like the 10k prior... one step at a time. For Disney some of mile 20 then 21 and 22 can be mentally challenging. First, just look at the faces of the folks you are coming up against on the out section (before WWoS and mile 17). Remember how 'good' they look as you meet them. Once you leave WWoS at mile 20, look at those following you 3 miles behind. Smile and think I know I look so much better.

Then you have the course segmentation that is relatively nice for the last 10k. From WWoS its a short hop to Osceola and then small one mile jogs on Osceola with the sun on your back and one mile on World in the shade. both of these one mile jogs have a mile marker in the middle to break them up. From World, its a short right and right again and then Chocolate Candy and 5k. DHS goes fast. Upon leaving DHS, its simple... Boardwalk, Yacht, Beach, Epcot and HOME!

Long story short. Ran 3:20 this morning and missed my miles by 5 minutes. I proclaim myself ready for Goofy VIII – ‘the ocho’.

Let Taper Madness BEGIN!:dance3:

I need a little taper advice for my first marathon. I have done a 17, 19 and a 20(two weeks ago). I was supposed to do another 20 this weekend but we were pummeled with snow and the roads here are horrible. I'd run on the sidewalks, but only about 50% of them have been cleared. I did go to the gym today and managed 11 miles on the TM, but I just don't have the mental game some of you have, I could not go any longer. I'm thinking of doing 20 next Saturday. Is that too close to the race? Am I needlessly panicking? :confused3

Better to stay uninjured that risk the slick....

I would counsel you to just call this a missed effort and chalk it up to a bad weather day. Hop onto your schedule and run the next long run per that plan.

Let the madness Begin!

Thanks for breaking it down! It helps to visualize it. I wish I had the course map with me today. Off to study it some more!

Felicidades!:cheer2:

Anyone else feel like there should be a little taper dance? Cuz I feel like dancing! (As soon as this groin muscle pull goes away, of course)

Hi all. For the Princess this year, there was a link to sign up for alerts as you hit 5k, 10k, 15k, and finish. You could have it set up as texts for your family/friends or it would post them on Facebook. I loved this! I actually had it send me texts about my pace and my friend's. It let me know when she was done and gave me an idea of my official pace. I also liked that it posted on Facebook so my friends could cheer me on.

I can't remember how or when I got the link for these alerts. Anybody know?

12 yesterday and 20 today. If I'm not ready for Goofy now I never will be! And I can't believe I got to run both in shorts and short sleeves (Colorado in December?) since it has been in the high 40's and sunny here.

Training Peaks and RunKeeper estimate over 4000 calories between the two  , so I think a margarita will be kicking off taper time! :thumbsup2:

Good luck to all those in the Midwest and East trying to get in their long runs with the bad weather, I feel for you.

HOORAY!!!
Bolding mine and after today, I am thinking the EXACT SAME THING!

I did my 20 today too! I didn't do a back to back due to issued previously posted.

The 20 was hard but I DID IT!!!! It was 32 degrees out when I started and at mile 15 I went home because the wind was picking up and the temp was dropping quickly. I was so cold. I went in the house and I really wanted to sit but I went downstairs and finished the last 5 on the treadmill! So very excited that I did it!!

I got slower and slower as the miles increased but I think my overall average pace was 14:45. So not terrible I guess.

I am a bit sore now, I have stretched and rolled and I know that I'll have to do it some more. I am also rediculously hungry. I ate Subway after stretch, shower, & roll with chips and 2 cookies but I am still sooooo hungry!!

I am happy for the taper. I feel like I can actually do this and I'm proud I didn't quit!

I am following a modified version of the Galloway plan that calls for today's final long run to be 26 miles... and I did it! Feeling tired but no damage. Definitely a mental challenge.

Congrats to all on your work today!!

And so I just finished a post-run Chipotle burrito bowl that was soooo good. Wish they served margaritas at this place!

I would if I could. I just want to go to sleep already but not sure if going to sleep at 6:30pm is such a smart idea.

What's everyone's thoughts on the Race Retreat and Pasta in the Parks?

Pasta in the Park sounds tempting but we are only available to attend Friday evening with the half on Saturday--I'm wondering if that's asking for trouble with being on my feet and out and about.

Any other recommendations for dinners Friday evening?

Look on runDisney the week after next on the spectator resources tab.

Just celebrated with one myself. Hope my speeling works ;)

I would probably not do a full 20, although it wouldn't be terrible. My normal taper is 15-18 for the first week. You could probably do something like that and still feel prepared.

My last 20 was today. I also set an all-time high for weekly mileage at 71. Everything is tired, but in good working condition so I'm excited about the race. Now I just have to keep from getting sick. Congrats to all you, especially first-timers, who have made it this far.
