Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

I wasn't so lucky today. I was goofing off with DS in the parking lot this morning on the ice and I fell back and busted my head open. Went to emergency clinic and got 5 staples in my head.

My neck is killing me and is going to be worse over the next couple of days. I was supposed to do 10 today. I think its going to keep me from doing anything until at least the weekend. At least my last 20 was last week.
Ouch! I hope you recover soon. That sounds awful :(

This is a non-running related post but I could really use some extra prayers. My mom collapsed on Christmas Eve and is in the ICU in critical condition. The prognosis is poor. This was completely unexpected. Please keep her and especially my step-dad in your thoughts and prayers.

Thinking of your mother Amanda.

My oncologist agreed to delay chemo until after the marathon. Woohoo! Hope to see some of you DISers there! I can officially start letting myself get excited...and nervous.
That is fantastic news! :cheer2:

I am wondering how many of you all are more focused on personal time versus seeing characters? My cousin ran a few years back and said how fun it was getting the pictures, etc.... I want to in one way but I find that I can get really caught up in my time. What are others doing??
I remember a RunDisney post asking if you run Disney races for "a GREAT time or a great TIME?" I think I lean more towards the GREAT time. I sign up for a Disney race for fun. I do want to keep moving, but I know my time will probably be a good 30 minutes longer than I would any other marathon because I do want to stop for photo ops. I have great pictures from my first half marathon (Princess 2012). I love those pictures so much so I want a similar experience at my first marathon. Having said that, my first stop probably for a picture will probably not be until Magic Kingdom.

Funny you should ask me that because the tech was insistent that I do that; the language barrier was an issue! But I got out with my calluses intact! Yay!

My goal is to finish and get lots of pictures! I even got a good, small p&s camera to fit in my Spibag.

At dinner last night my cousin told me she was certain the last 6 miles of the marathon are by far the easiest.

I don't know about you guys but I feel soooo relieved now.

Haha! I know they think we are crazy. The last time I got a pedicure was my sister's wedding which was a week before a half marathon and no way was I going into that race with baby fresh feet!

I'm still planning to run the Goofy as she would never forgive me if I missed it on her behalf.

Amanda

Oh Amanda - I am so sorry. Your mom is in my prayers.

I have heard some people say they went on a ride or two during the marathon. Is this allowed? Or is it a case of CMs just looking the other way? I am hoping to do Expedition Everest at AK and Rockin Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror at the Studios if possible. All three seem fairly close to marathon route as far as I can tell. Has anyone ever pressed their luck by trying to do all three before?

I fear that I am still not speedy enough to be able to enjoy stopping for pictures along the way. I'm in a much better corral placement, due to the fact that when I registered I was doing much better and submitted my expected finish time of what I was pacing at that point in time. That was before I was sidelined for a month with an Achilles issue (over use injury, inflamed the bursa).

2012 was my 1st half (1st race ever) and I had taken a small camera with time and got.... ZERO pictures. I was so focused on getting through it, I rather forgot all about having the camera in my belt pouch.

I as well got placed in a better corral than I feel I should, not sure what times I gave them. I think it depends on the runner I have been considering whether to bring my camera or not and I don't think I am. I think if I have my camera I won't be paying attention to the details and just be focused on getting pictures, plus I will have my cell phone, fuelbelt, fuelband, and Galloway timer so I think I will be loaded down as it is! :)

I'm sorry about your injury...I know it can be very frustrating! I would at least get a few pictures if you can for memories. You will do great and have fun.

Pictures for me!! I have 2 cameras at all times. My whole reason for running at Disney.... Unique photo ops! I am not worried about timing at Disney :-). Love running at Disney!

Posting for suggestions:

My husband and my three small kids are going to be cheering me on at some point during the half marathon in Jan. Anyone know where would be best for them to stand to see me? Is it too complicated for them to see me along the way, then meet me at the finish? TIA!

I'm too slow for pictures. I didn't get a great corral, so I'll be too focused on staying in front of the sweepers to even think about pictures

My Dad & Step-mom waited for me on Main Street at Magic Kingdom. They were able to easily get my attention as we came out of the back stage area and made the turn to go up Main Street.

Dad used the service they had that sent text messages to let people know where you were at and he said it worked very well.

Once I had passed, they high tailed it over to the Monorail to get over to Epcot. Of course, the Monorails stopped, and they were afraid that they wouldn't make it in time. Luckily I'm so slow that they had plenty of time to get over there and meet me at the end. :rotfl2:

Dad watched the traffic from the Monorail, and he said he was glad that they didn't even TRY to use the car instead.

Pictures, definitely the pictures. I run Disney races so I can enjoy the scenery, the parks, the characters, and all the other extras that make up that Disney magic. I know going in that my time will be 10-15 minutes slower than normal in the half and 20-30 minutes slower in the full. There are enough other races during the year where I focus on my time and a PR that it's nice to have one I can run just for fun. I slow down, look around to take it all in, take pictures along the way, and have two nice and relaxing days running through the parks.

Exactly this.

Never felt the races here were set up for a PR and the one time I did focus on time, it was just missing something.

Enjoy this one! Take in all the little things. Take as many pics as you would like, some great characters are out for the races. And have fun!

But it's the 0.2 that will get you!:lmao:

A few runners have jumped onto Everest. In past years, AK was 4 miles later into the race and the park open, yet not too crowded for folks who could spare some time. This year, all but the last few runners will clear Asia on AK prior to the park's opening. With regard to the DHS rides, those are well off course and at mile 23.5, most folks would not want to deviate that far - or wait that long in line.
