Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

It looks like our photos are up! Does anyone else not have any finish line photos on their page? I am disappointed, as that was the one I wanted to most--but I noticed my friend didn't have one either. Earlier the page said that they were still uploading photos, but that wasn't there when I checked just now.

Mine aren't there either, so I'm hoping they are still uploading those photos. They did the Spacecoast Marathon photography as well, and my finisher photo was late to be uploaded too. It did show up, so I have hope we'll get our finish line photos in a few days or so!

That makes me feel better. Thanks! :) I definitely like their photos a lot better than brightroom's...great upgrade!

Keep checking the RunDisney.com website. I believe you can sign up for email updates. I found it - select an event - then pick the PLAN tab. All the way at the bottom you can sign up for emails.

Hope to see you there!

Thank you ! Will do. Hope to see ya there too.

We were close to each other! I finished in 7:11. It was brutally hot! Congrats

We finished at the same time. I thought it was 7:14 but I did finish in 7:11. I was the one in a pink shirt jumping up and down at the finish, pumping my arms, running towards Minnie and giving her a hi 5.

I did it! I am a marathoner!!! A very slow marathoner, but a marathoner nonetheless. That was brutal. I was thinking we would finish in a bit after 5 hours...5 1/2 at the most. I was able to do my 20 miler in 4 hours so it seemed do-able. Ah the heat! And the character stops. But the awesome thing was that I was able to do most of race and crossed the finish line with my two training partners. The women who I have experienced so much with in the last year and a half. Through all kinds of weather and different injuries. We agreed to run our own race and I am ecstatic that it was the same race. I was so emotional crossing that finish line hand in hand!

WWOS dragged. Agree that the 20 mile spectacular was a huge letsdown. It would have been fine if they hadn't built it up so much.

We walked most of the last 6miles as our faster runner was in a lot of pain. But we all had our moments of being down and moments of being a cheerleader for those having a thought time. Mine came around mile 12 when I realized we were on pace to finish in 6 hours. What?!? How could we be going so slow. Looking back it was a dumb thing to get me down but it messed with my head.

We finished in 6:22. Did not expect that but as has been said the heat was bad and I probably spent at least 30 minutes on pictures.

It was a great but horrid time. Difficult, exhilarating, challenging, emotional, empowering. There is not one word that can capture this experience.

Thanks for all the support here. Thanks Maura and Charles and everybody else for your encouragement. Especially when I was sidelined with my sprain. It helped a ton!

Oh and I did see Prmamidedos in the first mile! Yay!

It was so nice to see you! Great job!!

I got tons of character pics and rode EE in AK. Did anyone else jump on a roller coaster? The breeze felt wonderful! The heat was horrid. I am glad I was properly hydrated before the race because I think it made a HUGE difference. I drank 3 sips of Powerade at each station and threw cups of water on my neck to keep cool. My feet were so swollen when I was done. DH said he also had sore feet but he massaged them with BioFreeze during the race and he was fine after. I thought it would make my feet too hot but wish I had done it.

Favorite parts:

The cars. I took a pic next to the classic white Corvette.

The person with the sign that said "Chuck Norris counted to infinity 2x, but never ran a marathon".

The funny signs on the right side of the road after WWoS, like, "why is the word phonetically not spelled the way it sounds?". It took my mind off the pain in my feet.

All the spectators.

The lady after AK handing out quartered oranges. Best orange ever!!

Riding EE and all the character photos I got to
take.

Seeing the finish line.

Not so great:

Running past the sewage plant on a hot, humid morning.

The 3 girls who didn't seem to realize that the photos were supposed to be a one shot but were turning them into long photo sessions.

Mile 20.

Overall, great event and I can't wait to go Goofy for the 10th anniversary of it in 2015. COACH, please make sure you're at BLT that year. LOL

I was amazed at how well I finished the marathon (in 5:59)considering I barely slept,as in 2 hours or less due to excitement I guess.I ran the first 14 miles straight feeling great the whole way, then I run/walked probably 75% run,25% walk through mile 18 when I felt a cramp in my left thigh which went away and came back 2-3 times later in the race,so at mile 18 I kinda switched to a 60% walk,40% run ratio.I did that through like 22 when I sorta felt the right thigh also slightly cramp. They weren't bad and would go away as I drank and took in some gels but I just wanted to finish without any bigger issues so by mile 23 I was pretty much just walking.I finished feeling perfectly fine and luckily the minor cramping was my only issue in the race, sure I wanted to finish stronger and not walking as much but then I thought about one of my major points was not to get any serious injury and it worked out. After the race I started getting some chafing in my inner right thigh,I applied the bodyglide heavy before the race and again in a bathroom in Animal Kingdom so I obviously should have applied again, luckily the burning started after the race was over, put some medicated powder and today it's fine,my only problem today was my thighs are pretty sore and stiff where like even a minor elevation change in the floor is painful, stairs are like hell.Probably should have rested today but instead went to DHS before coming back home, sure hope the stiffness goes away soon.

Hi, everyone. I hope someone can help me. Did anyone take a photo of my family in DHS Sunday around 10:30 or 11, holding a sign that said "the zombies are doing 12s. RUN!" ? I didn't know what their sign would say, but I loved it and I would very much like a picture for my scrapbook.

I got pulled by the medical team in HS :( dizzy, asthma attack (and I do t even have asthma), faint, nauseous. I am sitting here crying. I was sooooo close!

Julie, it was so nice to meet you and walk to the start together. I thought about you during the race. I am so sorry it didn't work out. You should definitely be proud of yourself for starting and doing your best. That is all any of us can do and none of us know for sure how a race will end up going. We can go into it in perfect health and preparedness and still have something stop us. You did AWESOME.

My turn. I finished my agonizing first marathon in 6:33. Was about 45 minutes off what I planned. But, once that sun came up, that race for brutal.

Started with 3/1 run/walk, but changed to 2/1 by the time we hit the raceway. By the time we hit AK was doing 2/2. At mile 16 got Charlie horse in right calf and 3/4 mile later it was my quad muscles locking. Wow was that painful. From that point was pretty much run until calf tightens, walk it out, then rinse and repeat. Pretty much power walked later four or five miles. Was passing those running when I was only walking so seemed to work fine.

I am still very sore as expected, but can't wait until next one. Was planning next 26.2 merely minutes after crossed line.

Okay, powerful marathon people, I'm taking a poll! I am running the Princess for the third time and have 2 other halfs under my belt. Am considering making the jump to the full next year, but wanted to hear thoughts on if you think Disney is a good "first" marathon. My only hesitation is the time. I have no idea how long it would take me. (I run a half in about 2:20). I am all about the pictures, so throw that in and the thought of how long I'll be out there on the course kinda scares the bejeebers out of me! I would appreciate opinions.

Go for it! I am so glad I did it and it was a GREAT 1st Marathon. I was in the same boat and very hesitant about not only the time but also the time for training and belief in myself that I could actually finish 26.2. My halfs are between 2:00 and 2:15.
Due to work, injury or kids, my longest run was 17 miles but following the RunDisney training plan kept me on track.

Completed the full this weekend in 5:47 and that was because we stopped to take so many pictures. If this was any other race I probably could have shaved off 30-45 minutes but this was not any other race, it's Disney. Take your time, soak it in and enjoy the sights around you. You will have a blast. Good Luck

My half marathon finish photos just showed up this morning. Nothing for the full yet. But, I had to find them by using the "Click to view your provisional assignments" link at the bottom of my picture page. It then brought up a lot of finish line pictures that I guess were all around my finish time. I then selected "keep" for the 2 that were of me and they showed up in my "My Photos".

My Half finish line photos turned out great.. Hoping the same for the Full.

First, best to Coach.. Hopefully everything went great for your interview..:thumbsup2

What an amazing weekend! I followed my training and all the advice given by the great people on this board and was able to complete the Goofy this weekend. Seeing my son and wife at the finish line was absolutely amazing because of all the sacrifices they had to make so I could train to complete the challenge... I ended up taking alot of pictures so my finish times reflected that, but still finished very well on both although Sunday was difficult with the heat.

I think my favorite sign on the whole course was "Why would anyone run 39.3 miles?? Because 39.4 is just plain crazy!" That one really cracked me up.

I too was disappointed with the Mile 20 experience and the run through WWOS. I think I was one of the last runners to be able to take a picture with the Mickey hot air balloon because they started deflating it when I left around 9:50. The only good thing about the Mile 20 experience was taking the pic with Mickey, Minnie and Pluto..

I missed the ride of EE because I hit AK at 8:30, but heard that lots were able to ride it later in the day. That would have be a nice break.. I also saw a couple of people ride the RR in DHS, but I was so close to the finish I just wanted to get done.

I did forget the advice to keep the sponge and just "reload" it at water stops.. That would have really helped.

Overall, I completed my goal of finishing both races and feel a sense of accomplishment that I will never forget. I want to send out a special shoutout to all the spectators and the WISH supporters were amazing. Thank you all for the encouragement on both days.

Ok - everyone. Honest opinion time. I'm a 3:00 half runner. Should I wait until I can progressively work my time down into the 2:30-2:45 1/2 range before attempting a full? I'm afraid a 3:00 half time would not give me enough buffer when attempting a full. I've been able to work off 20 minutes over the course of the last year in my run times, so I'm definitely on the path to a faster time. Just don't know when or even IF I should ever think about attempting this. I will say that I'm a slower runner in the start and a faster runner at the second half of a half. I seem to like the longer distances - just not sure how well that would hold up against the really long distances. You're not going to hurt my feelings by being honest...if you think I'm still too slow to attempt this, then speak up :) I could happily stay in 1/2 land and still be proud of my accomplishments.

I just did my first full/goofy. My fastest half time is just under 2.5 hrs. But most of my halfs are around 3 hrs. My half time this year was a little over 3 hrs and my full time was a little under 6 hrs. I think it's completely doable for you to complete the full in under 7 hrs!

I had Goofy on my mind ALL of the past year. Everything I did was leading up to it. I had a solid base of running starting in the spring and then started officially training in the late summer.

I finished my two halfs in October and November at 2:56 and 2:47 and I finished the marathon (after the half the day before) at 7:09. If I had been doing just the marathon I could have gone faster and finished around 6:40 given the conditions. If I were at home and running a local marathon without the hassles and fatigue of travel stress, and in cooler conditions, I think I would run it about 6:15. I would recommend continuing to work on your speed so you have a good solid hour buffer, and work on getting a good time for a 10k or a half marathon to get into a good corral.

I consistently was able to do 13mm long training runs at home in the cool weather on good sleep, but with the half I finished with a pace of 14:59/mile and the full 16:10 I think!!! I was reaching really far in running the Goofy. Had I had more training under my belt, and done more near-race distance runs than I did, although I was no slacker by any means, I may have been able to run the same pace in the challenging race conditions as I did in training.

I hope these reflections are helpful.

That's sort of where we're headed. Keeping a solid base all through this year by running halfs - up to 8 more this year alone if all goes to plan. We are very comfortable at the 13.1 mileage - slow, but comfortable. Took a long time to get there, but I enjoy the base long runs of 8-10 miles. What I don't like is the yo-yo training, building back up to the 13.1 capacity. So right or wrong, we thought that by running halfs periodicaly, we keep our base strong and start building to the full in the fall. Someone, speak up if I'm doing this wrong!

I guess I'm seriously intimidated by mileage that starts with the number 2!

Absolutely, you've been very helpful - thanks! Yes, I agree with you - I need a solid buffer and my speed needs to get better. We were in the F corral for the 1/2. Need to work on moving that up. I also need to work on the optimal routine for my fueling...gels, blocks , etc. It's close to where it needs to be, but not quite right yet. I found I had to fuel more in this past 1/2 than what I do in training. Must have been the humidity/race conditions. That may help my overall picture as well.

I can't imagine running the Goofy - the full maybe, but the Goofy? It's still out of my league and may never be. I truly am in awe of those that run this.

I'm a 3 hour half marathoner too. I just completed my first marathon and Goofy. I ended up doing my half in 3:11 and my full in 6:50. I wanted to finish faster, but the heat made it impossible. You can absolutely do it. Someone told me there was 4 miles of people behind me. My only real goal was to finish, so I did it.

On a side note, I want to thank all the wishers who were handing out snacks. I wasn't wearing a WISH shirt, but a very nice lady gave me some pretzels. I can't remember if it was the 1/2 or full (they are blending together, lol).

Jennifer

I also want to thank all the people out there cheering and everyone who made signs. It really meant a lot on both days. The wish shirts really made me smile.

I was pretty sore yesterday but we hit ak and hs and I went back to the room about 7. My better half went to mk to get some photos but I wasn't interested. Just needed some chill time. We were going to hit universal today but I lost my pass and don't want to buy a one day ticket for just a few hours before our flight home.

If anyone is interested, I have a hot pink goofy women's size medium shirt up for grabs. I need a large so if anyone Has one and would like to trade let me know.

Who else is doing tink this weekend with us?
