Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

Half: done! It was definitely warm out there. Tomorrow I'm not even bothering with my light jacket for the start. I took it off in the corral, had a tank on, and was fine. Some who are chilly-prone may still want at least a long sleeve shirt for the wait.

The walk from here at OKW to the corrals this morning was awesome!!! It was so fast and easy! :)

Thanks... I was wondering if I would need throw down clothes. I was leaning towards no, and this confirmed it. See y'all bright and early!!

On my cell at AK so I can't search, and I have a friend who was wondering where the cut off point for the marathon was. Thanks

What cutoff? Number of runners or time?

They gave out those crappy boxes again. At least it was slightly better than the DL half.

What's up with the crappy boxes??

Coming from Wisconsin, the heat and humidity has been quite a shock on the system. I'm not going to complain at all about getting to run outside in shorts and a short-sleeve shirt at all, but wow, I'd much rather it had been 50 and dry.

That being said, the half went great for me (probably too well considering I still have the last 2/3s of Goofy's tomorrow). My plan was to run ~1:45, take my figurative medicine and go rest up for the full (my PR for the half is 1:32, not to brag, but to put my plan in perspective). As others have said, everything was crowded at the beginning. It thinned out a bit once we hit World Dr (for Corral A at least). My first mile was 8:40 or so. The next few miles were right on pace with where I wanted to be, and then it happened... I got caught up in everything. I decided to leave character stops until tomorrow and I picked up my pace, not intentionally, but my body just wanted to get back to a pace I was more accustomed to. Every mile after running through Cinderella's Castle was faster than the previous.

I finished in 1:41 and change, still in good spirits and not completely drained, though my legs are quite achy right now. I'm quite envious of my wife and sister, who are done after this morning.

Other random thoughts...
  • We just got in on Thursday and hadn't seen the castle lit up at night, when I first saw it (just after going under the monorail line?), I said, "Uh... Wow...", not sure if I confused anyone around me.
  • Running past the fountain in Future World was the most humid place on the course in my opinion. I felt like I was running through the actual fountain.
  • I feel like the aid stations should have signs denoting where Powerade ends and water begins. I ran a race recently (I'm blanking on which one, I thought it was Flying Pig, but I'm not positive) that had flags denoting where everything was, seems like it would be useful when there are so many tables and there isn't a defined break to denote where one stops and the other begins.
  • There were areas back on Floridian Way for me that were just crazy dark.
  • The balloon people were just hitting World Dr as I was going back over it at ~mile 10.4. It was hard for me to imagine that there were nine miles worth of people behind me (and that the winner had already been done for 20 minutes).
  • I don't know if anyone else used the Port-a-potties on the left along the road to the forward corrals, but that was one of the most uncomfortable feelings in my life...

Finished the half at my desired 14 min/mile pace. Wasn't feeling great so resting up for tomorrow!
It took well over an hour to walk to the corrals!!!

Okay, a bit of a brag, but I found out I got second in my age group. Being top 5 was my biggest goal of the weekend.

That may be my only make as my left hamstring is pretty tight. If it doesn't loosen by morning then it will be a very relaxed marathon for Peter.

Wow!!! Congrats! And I hope it feels better.

Any words from security? I took the bus this morning because I was too chicken to try it, but I would really rather walk if I know I won't get turned back!!

What time are people walking over tomorrow, and which way are you going? Thanks!!

Congrats to all on their accomplishments today!

Amanda, why was the walk so long? Anything going on in particular? Advice for tomorrow?

So, so happy to have completed my first half - congratulations to all today's runners/walkers! I stuck to plan (7:1 ratio) and felt pretty good mist of the way through. I'd had an aspirational time in mind of 2:15 and finished in 2:19, so I'm a happy camper. And hey, my first 1/2, so an automatic PR! ;)

My one hitch came when I went to take out my Honey Stingers a little past the halfway mark and realized I'd either dropped the bag after the last dose or it had fallen out. *trauma* I had a bit of a mental fit and slowed down while I checked all around my person to see if I was just missing something, but then I took my Road ID phrase to heart - "suck it up, buttercup!" - and got back to it. I can't stand gels, but I grabbed one for a but of support and just kept on chugging.

I might have cried at the finish line. And on Main Street. What a great experience. :)

Best of luck to all the marathoners tomorrow!

Congratulations Reep that is fantastic!

I was wondering how people did getting to corals. I was on monorail to Epcot at 3:50, did not hang out in reunion area and just had time for a pit stop and then to my coral when first group went off. I know there were LOTS of people behind me. It seemed worse this year over the last 5 to get to the start. Hoping tomorrow is better.

Granulations for those who finished the half and good luck to those running tomorrow.

Same here.

I struggled today with the weather and this cold I am fighting. I had decided to go out at an easy pace. But with the cold my easy pace was about a minute slower then my training pace. I am not feeling good about tomorrow. I am going to have to slow down even more and take some walk breaks.

I left POR at. 4:05 and walked coach's route. It was light enough to see the path. We did run into a police man on the bridge, but all he did was tell us we were going the wrong way. :0) we kept going and walled behind corral E or whatever the last one on that side was. We had to separate a barrier, but then got inside before the crowd. People going to corral A should just go that direction as there was an opening on the left of that corral only.

If anyone wants to meet up at HH at okW in he morning to walk over I'd love to join. I really do t want to take the bus or walk Ali e.

It was SO crowded! We left runner retreat at 4:35 and missed the corral C start at 5:49. Leave early for your corral tomorrow!!!!
