Official Thread For Upcoming Eastern Canadian Cruises

Does anyone know if there is wifi at any of the ports or somewhere close to the ports and if any of it is free? I will be in the middle of an online course for my master's degree. I plan to have all assignments done prior to leaving except that we are required to participate in the class forum multiple times per week so I was hoping to just do a quick jump online at least one of the days to comment a time or two.....

I too would like to know the answer to this :) Thanks for asking.

Do you think the Saint John Alice Tea at Kingbrae Gardens will be worth traveling and spending the day there? My DD did the Alice Tea at the Grand Floridian this past July. I'm thinking that we will miss alot of other things that we would want to see. Is anyone else planning to do this?

I'd originally signed DD(6.5) and I up for this, but then changed my mind. We've done tea with Alice on the ships before, tea at Grand Floridian...there are so many character opportunities that, while I think she'd have fun, there are other things to see in the area that I will probably never get a chance to see again. I ended up booking with a local charter company that will take us all over and tailor things to a child to some degree, while allowing my mom and I to see some of the area. We're coming all the way from Florida, so I decided not to miss the chance to see something completely different. If I lived in the area and could return fairly easily, then I'd do the Alice tea and just enjoy a completely new experience, but since this is probably a one-time visit for us, I wanted to see more of the local area.

For Saint John

Plus the public library which I believe is right by the port has it.

There are also a few other cafe's in the area that provide it.

Halifax

I know I can go ask at my ATT store and will do that but I wonder about iphones. I know it needs to be in airplane mode to avoid any charges.

Does anyone know if the Map function works in airplane mode?

I actually google mapped the Nova Scotia port to a few places we want to go, so we have an idea of time/distance. I would love to use this feature when we are there but needless to say, won't turn the airplane mode on.

someone also mentioned a Halifax app which sounded good but not sure if I could use that either!

Just curious and as I said, will def check with ATT.

Oh yes, JillJill. I have a list of all the links posted on this thread. I would like to post them on the first post, but I have no idea how to copy the format I have in microsoft word that has them very neatly grouped by Port, and type of information (ie store, tourism info, port adventure). When I try to post it, I just get one long list, do you know of anyone who moderates or runs this site that could post it for me in format? I have headers in larger font and different colours, and a column for Halifax and another for Saint John
I do not know how you would go about posting that info. Try asking over on the Tech Board to see if someone there can help you out on how to post it in the format you have.

Just read an article posted by Murphy's on its FB page entitled "Murphy's works to change 'tourist trap' image. Seriously thinking of cancelling our $100+ per person lunch and boat ride excursion offered by DCL. I think we may be very disappointed.:sad2:

I think I'll start reading the reviews on other restaurants near the port in Halifax. Maybe do that in conjunction with the Hop On Hop Off bus.

You couldn't link that article could you?

A question to all from the Halifax area : We are thinking about visiting the Maritime museum of the Atlantic. From what I googled its about a 15 min walk away from Pier 21. So what do you think - is it ok to walk this way ? I mean is this a safe neighbourhood or should we be afraid ??

Thanks for your opinion!

Hi,

I'm not from Halifax so can't answer your question other than to say I wouldn't worry.

I live in Boston and when I look at photos of the Halifax port, it reminds me a lot of the Boston waterfront. These waterfront areas are now built up for both tourists and locals a like to enjoy.

As far as ports go, my guess is Canada will be one of the 'safest' around. In the Mexican and Caribbean ports, once you are off the ship, you are typically approached by locals selling you things. While not necessarily unsafe, it can be annoying if you have no interest in the bartering thing! I can't imagine this would happen in Canada. It's just a different way of life compared to islands.

I don't mean to answer for the Halifax locals, so I look forward to their answer! I guess what I'm really trying to say is I don't think you need to worry.

Oh I think you will be safe enough, my only advice is if you are visiting during the Buskers Festival.......Don't touch the statues...what ever you do, don't touch the statues.:joker:

An easy walk ... you will be absolutely safe. Would let my 78 year old mother do it. No concern at all ....

I have a GREAT idea for you Eastern Canadians - you can have a DISmeet at the port when the Magic arrives and they we can all stop by and say HI!!!:woohoo:

Just a thought:rolleyes:!

What happens if you touch the statues?

As I understand it ... I think he might be referencing a busker? Not sure ... that would be a performer who may look like a statue ...
Only other time to not touch a statue would be after a seagull has done something to it. Otherwise have fun .... touch all the statues you want to!
