Official thread for the 2010 Princess 1/2 Marathon & 5k- REGSITRATION IS OPEN!

I'm joining in!!!

I have NEVER ran a marathon, and haven't ran a mile (minus playing tennis which was more sprints) since my sophmore year of high school which was almost 8 years ago. I am trying to lose weight and as an incintive DH said can do the Princess marathon. :woohoo::yay::dance3: I was in shock!!! Not only does it support luekemia and lymphoma (we are big into anything with american cancer society and this is the next big thing) but it's a reason to go to DISNEY WORLD!!! WOOT WOOT:banana::banana::banana: After looking at the website today I am debating on whether to do the 5k and shot for the half marathon next year, or if I should wait to register after I start getting my butt in gear. Right now I try to either walk 1 1/2 miles on my road or do 1hr long pilates video 3 or 4 times a week. So I am a LOOOOONG way from doing a 5k much less a half marathon. I will probubly be doing this on my own unless my mom decides to be daring (but I'm not counting on it, she's not a runner and she admits it, although she could probubly walk it as fast as I jog:idea:) Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated on getting started. I look forward to joining you all on this venture and hopefully meeting you in March!!!

Welcome! I can speak from experience. I was not a runner until this time last year. I was in the same boat as you...beginner. I decided that a 5K was the best choice for me. I wanted to "try" running and there was less pressure to run the 5K than train and run a half marathon. I ran the 5K, loved it, and couldn't wait to train for the half. I think the experience of the 5K was less intimidating for me as a beginner.

If you have the time to train, I say go for the half! If you want to take it slow and see how you do training for the 5K, go that route. Then, next year you will have confidence to run the half--and a reason to go back to Disney!

Good luck with whatever you decide! Keep us posted on your training!

I am another that decided to join all of you princesses in March. I am like most, I am not a runner. I have PCOS, so I am overweight. I was diagnosed less than a year ago. I decided to run the 5k, but that is not what I wanted to run. I had originally wanted to run the 1/2, but I just had knee surgery 3 weeks ago. So I am not just training fo my very first 5k, but I am having to learn to walk without any support. I am hoping that I will be able to do a light jog by this time next week. I am able to walk 1.5 miles daily in 30 minutes, I am on my way to that 5k.

It sounds like you are well on your way to getting ready for the half. I am sure as long as you keep your focus, you will be ready. I have found using the Nike+ Sportband has helped immensely with my training - as it is nice to kind of cheat and see how far you are going. I have my goals and seeing that I only have a few miles left helps me push myself just a bit more. Then, plugging it into the computer to see your progress is more of an incentive. That, and they give you trophies as you progress through their training programs. :cool1:

If joint pain is slowing down with your recovery, you may want to check with your orthopedic doctor about their thoughts on Cosamin DS. Mine recommended it for the pain I was getting in my hip and it has improved 100% as that was hindering my training for a while there.

Wishing you all the best! It is great that we have five months to go. :yay:

I am right there with you:hug: I was diagnosed with PCOS a year ago next month and it is one of the hardest things I've ever had to deal with. It's like constant PMS:scared1::headache: Good luck on your recovery!!!

Well ladies, I decided I am in! I have wanted to run the full marathon for years, but have never done it. I think the Princess half is the perfect place to start. I am trying to convince some of my friends to join me, but they are all really hesitant. I'm doing it with or without them! I'm excited about sharing the journey with all of you!

Welcome! You will find lots of advice and encouragement here! I hope you can get a few friends to join you. Have you started to train? I have been our running but will start my official training in November.

Good luck!!

I have started to pretrain. I have been walk/running 3 miles 3 or 4 times a week. This past week, I alternated walking and running every half mile. This coming week I am aiming to run .6 and walk .4 for 3 miles.

Kristy, welcome to this thread. I'm sure you hear this all the time but you are an inspiration for finding time to run with eight children. I peeked at your blog and I know what you mean about when you get busy and something has to go, it is often the things that are just for Mom that get cut. I'm glad you are getting back to making time for yourself, although I know it is very hard!!

I have three children ages 4, 2, and 3 months and I have to plan and partner with my husband every day to make sure I can get my training in. I have started running at 9pm in my neighborhood after my older boys are in bed and my infant takes one of his longer "naps." It is not the schedule that would be my first choice but the weather is nice at that time and I don't worry about the kids driving my husband nuts, so I just make it work. I'm sure you have to do the same.

Anyway, it is nice to meet you and I look forward to hearing more about your adventures in training!
Amy

Hi Everyone,

I just registered for the Princess Half Marathon. I have run three full marathons and quite a few half marathons but I've never run a Disney race. I never even considered it really, but now I think its the PERFECT thing to do. I love all things Disney and I love to run.

I live in Ca. and I plan on doing the Disneyland Half Marathon in Sept. as well so I can get the special "coast to coast" medal.

I'll be traveling to FLA by myself. If I can't get into one of the hotels that provide transportation to the race, how difficult is it to drive from a non-participating hotel? Does anybody know what time road closures begin?

Where is the starting point for the race? Does anybody know when they post the course?

Please feel free to send me an email. I'd love to find someone to meet up with!

Janet

I have a copy of last years race map on my website at http://disneyrunning.com/09NEWPrincessHalfMapweb.pdf . It will answer some of your questions.

Good training!

I've finally convinced my mom to walk this with me! I can't wait for her to experience her first 1/2 marathon and Disney trip all at once!

That is too exciting!!! My mom and I are doing the 5k. We want to do the 1/2 but she's having trouble with her hip so for now we are just sticking with the 5k. Good luck!!!

Ooops, I just realized that I have a question for those of you who fly to Orlando. Where is the best place to find the cheapest fares for flights? Normally, we drive, but I thought that since this was going to be such a short stay that we may try flying instead--if we can find a flight that's cheap enough. The DH has never flown, and really isn't crazy about the idea, but he said he would do it if I could find something that isn't outrageous. We'd be flying out of Atlanta, which is only an hour to an hour and a half drive for us, so flying would be much, much quicker than a 7.5 hour drive. It may be wishful thinking that I can get something cheap, but does anyone have any advice for me? TIA!!

I suggest that you price from Atlanta to Tampa. Its more expensive to fly into Orlando. You can probably get a crazy good deal to Tampa. The drive from Tampa to Orlando is maybe an hour and a half to 2 hours.

Good luck!

I never even thought of that. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the advice!:thumbsup2

Does anyone know what the discounted price is on theme park tickets for registered runners?

Thinking of doing this again next year, I had so much fun at this years Princess but would be going solo and would need a roomie, anyone else going solo that would consider staying at the values?

We got great ticket prices! I usually go through ticketmania, but the deal through Disney marathon is much better. I got 5 days, but you can get however many you need. You need to call the number for the reservations.

I am definately in for this race again. I have BCV booked but have not registered yet. Look forward to chatting with everyone!
