Official thread for the 2010 Princess 1/2 Marathon & 5k- REGSITRATION IS OPEN!

Swim-mom, how are you? How is your training going?

:goodvibes thanks for asking !

I have been taking it easy, as I found a 10 week program that is not intense, and really practical - its marathonrookie.com (a fellow dis'er sent it to me).

I have been working on getting my base up to 3 miles, which I can now run without stopping (except when I cross the streets, as turning my neck to look over my shoulder does not happen after surgery - which is fine).

I have had shin issues, but I think it is due to not running consistantly - which clearly stops today since my plan starts. Did you look at the plan? it is not intim at all!! Looks do-able and is 4 days of running and 3 rest days - I plan on doing my elip two days a week and have one off day completely. I want to be prepared for this, but also loose the 15 pds i put on from my surgery too.

look at the plan and let me know if you want to join my madness

I teach at a college/univ level so that has been keeping me busy too -- still working on putting my grades in and my students keep emailing me even though they are not due until the 4th! UGH!!

Rain or Shine - I will be doing week 1 day 1 - 3 miles!!

I need some help from some of you experienced runners out there...
I'm really fighting with my choice of training plans right now. I'm following the Run/Walk plan from MfM. However, after reading more of the book, I'm wondering whether or not I should be following the Walk/Run plan instead. My biggest fear and worry is getting swept. I'm currently on week 4 of the Run/Walk plan, and while I've been able to complete all the work-outs, they get a little tough, but I manage to push through them and have gotten my time to just a little over a 16 minute mile. I feel as though my time will get better in the coming weeks. But as I've read more and more of the MfM book, I've started to second guess myself. Now I'm wondering if I should switch to the Walk/Run plan. Again, my worry is that if I do so, I won't be able to keep my time down in order to keep from getting swept. I'm really scared and almost thinking about giving up--but this is one that that I actually want to finish for once in my life. Anyone have any advice/insight???

I'm not following the MfM plan this time, but I've started using them in the past. I trained for the Donald with TnT and I have switched over to a walk run program. My times stayed about the same, but I can still finish my workouts and not hate life the next day.

Wish I could help those with training, but I'm struggling right now. I have always picked a plan and gone with it, but I have been sick, losing weight and not feeling myself. A month ago I could run for a hour at a 9:30 pace and now I struggle to run 20 mins. I'm starting to worry about being ready for the 1/2. I think I can finish, but not as well as I would like. On a better note, my DD is coming with me (her college sping break) and she wants to run the 5K so I signed her up today. Also got park passes for us :thumbsup2 I got our hotel a while back, I got a "code" so we got a good deal at All Star Movie.

Now..Happy New Year to all!

Joan, I'm sorry to hear that things haven't been going so well for you. I'm sending you lots of pixie dust so that you'll stay well and that you'll pick back up on your training! I know you can do it!:wizard::wizard::wizard::wizard:

I'm sure your DD coming along is a lot of encouragement. My DH is coming with me for the weekend, but won't be running. I'm going to have to depend on myself for motivation and discipline-and frankly, that's scary!:sad2:

UGAFan, I'm sorry I don't have any specific advice for you but I wanted to write you a little note of encouragement! I am also doing MfM and have recently switched my mindset from wanting to run the whole thing to run/walking. Now I am really enjoying the training and the runs and I feel like it exactly suits my needs right now.

So the interval plan for me is working as it should, I think, which is to maximize the run portion and still have energy to walk as fast as you can during the walk. I think you need to choose whichever plan focuses on your strengths.

How do you feel during the run portion and the walk now? Are you running too hard so you are have to use the walk to rest or are you able to power through the walk as much as you can?

Whatever you decide, I hope you won't give up. I know the race will be very exciting and the adrenaline and excitement will help you with your pace a little. And with two months still left to train I think you can definitely "beat the bus"!! Don't give up!!

I'll be interested to see what some other folks with more running experience have to say in terms of whether you should change plans or not. Good luck!

I am getting so nervous...like what have I gotten myself into:confused:

I am walking and I am at an 18 minute mile:scared1: it is in the snow and I have snow pants and bulky coat etc but still i have a long way to go in 8 weeks. I am so worried about beeing swept.

This is my first race of any kind and I am doing it solo

Can I be honest? Of course I can....

I sorta am scared of the bus. I am going to be walking. I could jog some...but every time I jog some in training I hurt something (knee, hip, shin...) or get blisters...so I have been walking.

When I am on the treadmill I am slower, but I am able to walk 16 min miles - so I am not too worried.

I plan to get toward the front of the slowest corral and I am hoping it takes folks in the back a few min to cross the start line...because they don't start sweeping until AFTER the last person crosses the start line...right? They start the 16 minutes then...right?

How much time might I have? Do I have ANY cushion?

Ok so today I officially signed up for my first half marathon I am really nervous I have only ran a 5K before, and plan on also doing the ESPN 5K. I found an 8 week program that I am starting tomorrow, I am just hoping it is enough time to get ready!!

You still have time to increase your speed. Just keep at it. I know that you will get faster. One word of advice from our experience last year, don't get so caught up in the moment that you forget about your speed. DD and I did that last year and almost didn't make it in to be part of the official time. Not gonna do that this year. Not as many pictures, stops, etc. DD and I are doing the Donald half marathon in a week and a half. She is then doing the full marathon the next day. Neither one of us has been doing training that we really needed to do, for one reason or another. We are planning on doing the Princess again. Have the room but haven't registered. We were going to do that at Disney at the Expo. Maybe we better do it beforehand! All you ladies that are first timers are in for a great experience. The Princess last year was my first ever race of any kind. To be surrounded by thousands of empowered women was a phenomenal feeling. Now I am hooked (but desperately craving french fries that I gave up 2 months ago!) Keep the training going. You're all going to do just fine!

Meg

I was just playing around on the Disney site, and I just realized that the EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival would be happening during the Princess Half. I'm happy and unhappy about that. Happy because I've always wanted to see it, and I finally can! Unhappy because it might affect crowd levels while I'm there.

Did the dates coincide last year? Did you notice a difference in crowd levels?

Hi everyone -

Just wanted to share that I have looked at several running plans to prepare for the Princess and I decided on the "marathonrookie 1/2 plan".

It is reasonable, and it is a 10 week program (so this is week 1) run 4 days off 3 -- so its not too late to start!!

Just thought I would share, since I searched every plan that is on the internet as well as in books too!! LOL

Funny thing (well not really) but I have been sick and did not run day 1 (which was 3 miles) on Monday. So today feeling a bit better, I will run day 2 and figure how I am going to get the other running day in OR just consider it a wash

How is everyone else doing? and what plan are you using?

I am in no way a runner (I'm doing Hal Higdon's walking half-marathon training plan, here), but I think I might have some insight into the training dilemmas. I've done a lot of research and I've come to the conclusion that the plans aren't so much for increasing your time as getting your body used to the mileage. So, if you're worried about being swept (as I am), just do the training plan that works for you and build up the mileage and stamina. As long as you push yourself a little each time (time or length wise) you will continue to get faster. I'm hoping the adrenaline and excitement of the event help push me to go a bit faster as well.

These are the things I've been telling myself, so I thought others might take comfort from this info. as well.:grouphug:

Mickey1024 where did you find an 8 week program?

Disney_mommy I have used Hal Higdon training and really like it. I was to start his program the first of Dec., but got sick and it is taking a long time getting better and I'm looking for a shortened training program.

Starting in week 4

4,5,7,5, 8(Should be week 8) then the plan from there.

Get out the door but be safe. Do feel free to back a mile off any of my distances until you catch Hal.

I agree to some degree with your assessment of getting time under legs. But I do think that if pace is an issue you need strength as much as time. I like Hal a lot as I do Jeff and the Penguin. But I think these guys have not challenged the first timer enough; especially on the quality of the mid week run; or walk in this case.

Here is where I am at. I am not a junk mile fan. Any time a program has rest, easy and stroll on each and every weekday activity I want to scream. Make the Tuesday Thursday walks hard, brisk, huffy puffy, however you want to describe a hard walk. Sorry, there is a theorem that I used to think was wrong but I now fully subscribe to. If you want to run fast you must train fast. Or again in this case walk. While I would coach you to not worry about time or pace on your long runs today, I would not coach you to go out lightly on every midweek workout. Don’t get me wrong, your pace will increase following Hal’s plan to the tee, but you could do more if you pushed a little more than his descriptors.

Sorry for interrupting and thanks for listening
