Official Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend - The Dark Side 2017

I'll agree to that only if WDW cancels the planned Star Wars Land expansion thus leaving Star Wars Land only in Disneyland. :P We need to keep the Force balanced on both coasts after all. In the case of wildly popular properties, Disney wants as much balance as they can reasonably get.
Nope, sorry. Siths do not like balance in the Force. ;)

At least for me here are Run Disneys issues.

1.Pricing,I know theyre premium races but their prices are just too high when compared to other races, especially when people have to add a flight and booking a Disney resort to the tally.
2.Removal of night races,ToT and Wine and Dine made for unique race experiences, especially with the parks open after the races,a morning W&D half just does not have the appeal.
3.Addition of challenges,I love the idea of multiple races and medals, and so does Disney when they take my money, the problem with that is doing these multiple races costs a lot of money (see #1)and we know many RD runners are all or nothing,i guarantee you there are Runners who if the money is not there for the challenge just skip the weekend altogether instead of doing just one race.
4.Race courses,Wine and Dine just went from the best half course at Disney to the worst,I'm not running it this year but a co worker who is is complaining plenty about it.Obviously with DHS construction that will be an issue for a couple of years.Heres an idea with those two huge garages at Disney Springs, how about a new course that starts or ends there, its something new and different.

I do worry about the rD franchise long-term.

My worry is that once they are under capacity, they start questioning whether the rD franchise is even worth it. I hope that they reevaluate and try to entice runners back, but they may just shut down the whole operation if it's not very profitable.
I'm jumping into this conversation a bit late, but I think it would take something pretty drastic for them to eliminate RunDisney altogether. That sounds extreme. Even though some races aren't selling out quickly or even at all, they are still extremely popular, especially some of the weekends like Princess. I could see them cutting back down on the number of race weekends overall and the number of registrations per event, but I just do not see how things are so bad that they could see it as not being worth it anymore. And I hope it doesn't come to that. There are so many of the races I want to do!

Yes, I completely agree. That is why I said long-term. In the near term, I don't think there will be any major decisions, and I agree that reducing the number of races would probably be the first step down the road, if needed.

I think #s 1 and 3 work in tandem for me. The prices are very high, but so far I've been willing to pay them. Where the challenges come in, for me, is that they offer something that most local races do not, enhancing their appeal. In addition, if I'm going to shell out the extra money for the trip to Disney with plane ticket, park tickets and hotel, I want to run more than just the one race to make it worth the effort and expense. In the overall cost of the trip, factoring in everything else, the extra cost of the challenge doesn't add all that much.

But then I thought we could just walk back into Epcot and do Garden Grill said:
@MommaoffherRocker and I had this conundrum as well :) We are running the 5k with our oldest boys (11, 10) and I know my DS can pack away some food...and after running? HA! better get a buffet. We chose GG, tried for PPO but I think ended up with 0810. I figure, the race is at 0530, even if we're not actually starting until 0600, and take a LOT of pictures and take our time, we're going to be done by 0730 LATEST (including medals, etc). So, we can hop into Epcot and eat, do a couple quick FP+ things (?) and maybe do a water park or pools the rest of the day (after showers!)...head back out for nighttime stuff. I think if you know the general time you'd finish (and then add +0:05 for each corral start) you can get a pretty good guesstimate! It will probably take a few min to get INTO Epcot with bag check etc but for us I think it will work :)

Been a busy planning stretch for me with this upcoming race. I was able to make my ADRs and got all the ones I wanted, so I'm happy about that. While my dining plans are not subject to some change, I have what I want.

Friday evening pre 10K meal at 'Ohana. This meal just appealed to me. That said, it's also the meal most likely to be dropped. We'll see how comfortable I feel as I get closer to the race and how much I want to chance getting back to my room "later" than I want. This won't be much of a park day because of the Expo, but given the great price I found for a 7 day park hopper, this day off from the parks suddenly became a light park day.

Saturday: This is always a bit of a tricky day to plan. I've always done a late breakfast at Disneyland after the 10K and before the 1/2, but given the differences between Disneyland and WDW, I don't want to plan a specific breakfast especially given last year's challenges. Hopeful realistic scenario is I'll have a late breakfast at the resort.

I did schedule a late afternoon meal at Le Chefs de France. This is another meal subject to cancellation. In its favor are the appeal of the baked macaroni and cheese before the 1/2 and the relaxed nature of this meal.

Sunday: Very late lunch at Be Our Guest. Booked for late because I don't want to be too rushed to make an ADR after the 1/2. Not very likely to drop because it's Be Our Guest. I love this restaurant and hope to see a different side of it for lunch. In the end decided on Le Cellier for dinner. It's a favorite of mine and I decided I wanted a very celebratory dinner for after the race.

Whatever I do in the parks those two days is a bonus of sorts. Post race touring is very much a matter of doing just enough to be active, but taking it very easy.

Getting all my ADRs also sets me up for one day at Universal to see Harry Potter. There's a decent enough chance that my next WDW visit will occur after Star Wars Land opens so it will be much more difficult to pull myself away from WDW to see Potter at that time.

And with the back to back training runs having begun this weekend for the Rebel Challenge, this also means that I have back to back runs every other weekend now through Dark Side race weekend. A challenge yes, but I know what I want to accomplish and there's only one way to do so.

We are doing California Grill on that Friday night. We'll have done a full day at MK that day and I wanted to top it off with fireworks. That should make going to bed early (hello fireworks adrenaline) fun :)

Saturday night we are going to Trattoria al Forno for dinner as it's close to the Beach Club and pasta. Carb up.

Sunday we have late brunch at California Grill again because...blood mary bar.

I'm bummed that I could not get Le Cellier for the time/night we wanted it :( You have me jealous about your ADR.

Have you tried changing the number of people for the ADR? In my case, it didn't have an ADR for 1 available, but I was able to book for 2. Now I just inform them that the 2nd person isn't coming beforehand and I'm all set. I did that a few times with some of my ADRs this time around.

I think the issue is that we are a group of 5. Harder to get those adrs. We are going to Chefs du France instead. I think we'll find a way to survive :)

Just updated my proof of time to use my Wine & Dine time, woohoo, it's just about 5 minutes faster than what I had in there, but exciting to be able to change it! It took 2 tries for it to stick, so if you update make sure to double check after doing it that it stuck.

and during Wine & Dine head Star Wars music at one of the mile markers and my brothers did too, we wondered if they forgot to take out a clip from darkside in a few playlists at markers?!? It was kind of funny.

RunDisney went for a cash-grab thinking that they could make $$ by adding a second Star Wars race weekend and double-dip with the Kessel Run - pulling on the popularity of the franchise. Financially, I don't think they would tell you that it truthfully paid off given the drop-off in year two

As for Avengers - it's a West Coast race on the SAME EXACT DAYS as Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas ... the premiere RnR event that also happens to be unique. I don't think the theme for that one is the problem as much as the weekend/date. I'd love to see what happens with a date change, but I'm planning on Avengers (or whatever that race is) in 2017 instead of DLH.

The real problem - if we're doing real talk - is that there just isn't anything unique about any of the race weekends anymore ... I mean, even the new courses are incredibly uninspired. Make Star Wars "Dark Side" a night race to mix it up and make it stand-out among a sea of race weekends that are all the same. Add a relay. Something.

This-I love Run Disney races, but I also like to mix it up and do the Rock and Roll races also. While I'm doing both Star Wars races in 2017, I'm not doing Wine and Dine again since it is days before Rock and Roll Vegas, and is the same weekend as RNR Savannah.

For those of you doing the Rock & Roll, what makes them different/better than the Disney races?

location for me....vegas was awesome running down the strip at night

Hi guys! Anyone have any recommendations as to what rnr races are most fun? I just got the 3-race pass for 2017 and looking for a third race. Since we live in Chicagoland, will be doing Chicago and St. Louis. Thanks!

I had a season pass a year or so ago. my favorites were

Vegas - you run down the strip and down freemont street...pretty awesome at night... although I remember it was darn cold.
chicago - insanely hot it was during some heat wave.

Adding to the discussion about popularity. I just did the Wine and Dine so I'm a newby. I think the big issue is timing. The Dark Side is the week after Spring Break, so there are a lot of people not in a position to go to Orlando if they're already taking vacations. That's my issue. I am considering doing the Dark Side, but it's a week after we're going to England for Spring break. They do the same thing for Marathon Weekend, right after Christmas Break, and the Princess, right after President's Day weekend. They know these are down weekends, so the races are used to boast attendance. The sort of exception is W&D, which comes after Halloween, but nobody takes vacation then. They had to close Epcot at capacity last Saturday with the combination of W&D and F&W, so the race certainly served its purpose of boosting attendance.

Wow, that is a late Spring Break. Ours is in mid March and appears that the high times blackout dates for WDW runs through April 1.

Although it is a week after paying taxes... so that sucks.

My kids are out for Spring Break April 12-18. It's the lamest Spring Break ever. So they go back to school the day I'll leave for WDW. I had hoped to take mine with me, but I'm hoping to take mine out for Light Side and take them home to California as my youngest has never been and my middle was only 6 months old the last time we went home so I'll stick to one time missing school. But I digress, the pricing for Dark Side is still the super high Spring Break pricing and WDW hasn't released any discounts yet for the time frame. (The current discount goes through April 8.) And much to my dismay, it still falls within the blockout of the military discount.
