Official So You Think You Can Dance Season 7 Thread

I know alot of people don't like Jose, but I think Billy should have went home. Last season he had to leave due to an injury and was given another chase to try out straight in Vegas. Then this season he is hurt again and the doctor clears him to dance, but he doesn't. I think if someone is hurt and they don't dance it is an automatic exit to home.

Like I said, I am new to the show, so I don't know about Billy's prior injury. I think this is a good point though. In the real world, it wouldn't matter how talented he is. If he is undependable due to his injuries, he won't be getting a whole lot of job offers. In many cases, producers would rather go with someone who may be less talented but is healthy and dependable so they can stay on schedule.

....good point - I forgot about that...

Actually in Season Six Billy made top 20 and never made it to compete because he had mono. He was given clearance straight to Vegas this year because, in Nigel's on air explanation at the time, "the rules are that if you've never competed, you can come back again." Obviously they've broken that "rule" this year for Alex -- or at least have said he can come back to Vegas next year and try for a spot. I personally can't begrudge him that as the fantastic dancer that he is, but I wonder how I would feel if I didn't like him or I was another dancer who didn't get that gift from the producers?

How many dancers have been ineligible after great auditions based on age and given tickets straight to Vegas for the following season? (Nathan Tsouras of Season Six)

They've run completely off the rails regarding the rules and IMO completely double-talk almost anything they say about dance, dancers, etc. anymore. I feel like I'm watching the show spiral into the lowest common denominator-type reality TV and I'm really sad about it. Where else on network TV do you see something like Alvin Ailey dancers performing or a pas de deax from Don Quixote? That's not even a given from PBS anymore. Along w/ "discovering" and developing young dancers, showing the audience the art of dance is what this show used to be about. I want to see true artistry & athleticism win the day on this show -- not have them start force feeding me gimmicks and tricks and telling me it's dance!

They had no leg to stand on in regards to automatically removing Billy for injury this year because they gave the same opportunity to Ashley D. in Season Six. I'm sure legally they could not do it this season because of what they did then.

You think they'd learn it really sucks when you get caught in your own mess because you don't set up rules and follow them.

I think Jose got extra rest because he wasn't in the opening numbers the last two weeks.

I can't imagine why the judges are keeping Jose in.

So...not this can or will happen, but I think Lauren, Kent, and Adechike should be safe next week, too. Then someone (or 2 someones) that should have gone home last night can go on and leave!

Hadn't thought of this, but IMHO, it would be a fair way to handle it.

I agree and as others have said, they need to pick a rule and stick with it. They are definitely making their decisions based on their personal feelings about the dancers. If it was Jose that was injured and chose not to dance, would they have given him a pass or sent him home...

As far as Lauren, Kent and Adechicke, yes, after next week there will be 2 less dancers. But had one of this weeks bottom 3 gone home, it would have increased their chances to stay next week. It changes the odds as it were. I have really loved this show and watching the dancing....I hope this is not the year it jumps the shark :sad2:

I noticed this too. Is it just because he couldn't keep up with the choreography? Or is it something else? If it is the choreography, then shame on the judges for not sending him home last night. As far as Billy, I am sure he was thinking of his future past SYTYCD. He isn't likely to win and wants a future in dance. Why risk it? I love to watch the dancing, but hit the mute button when the judges open their mouths.

Interesting...I didn't notice that! Why the heck hasn't he been in them? And how is that possibly fair to the other dancers who have to learn that extra routine? Does anyone else know anything about this and why he hasn't been in them??

....yeah, yeah, whateva....I'm STILLED bummed that Alex isn't on the show...
You & me both.

I haven't gotten a chance to actually watch the show (I DVR'd it), but now I definitely have to watch it to find out what all the hulabaloo is about!

I thought Billy went home last season due to illness. Part of whether they are considered to not be eliminated is doctors orders. Hence the past two weeks; two dancers were directly eliminated due to the actual injury. For obvious reasons, they could not go through because they were not permitted to dance. I think Billy likely wasn't cleared for multiple weeks, hence getting bumped last season.

I don't like that they did non-elimination this week. But I've never liked the "considered to be kept even though they couldn't dance rule. I think Noelle was the first contestant they kept for the following week. Bugged me then and it bugs me now.

Eight minutes into the show and Mia has already managed to tick me off! Can she please stop saying things about Kent's face!! :headache:

She has a bit of a point. I find his expressions very distracting because he's so over the top with every dance. It's really the reason I don't like him.

After seeing every tour, I'm actually hemming and hawing about the presale tomorrow . I'm really unhappy about NO ballroom/salsa people being on the tour. I don't mind contemporary, but...

Sigh.

I like his expressions because it shows he LOVES what he's doing. I think Adam was correct a couple of weeks ago when he said Kent could have a fabulous career in Broadway. Maybe that's why I like him, though.

Oh, I definitely think he'd do great on Broadway. But for me, that's the only time his expressions work. This last dance with Jose, the expressions made the dance. So I guess for me, he just needs to control it a bit more.

I agree. I think sometimes dance is supposed to be about, well, the dancing. And his overly dramatic and sometimes goofy faces often detract from the mood of the piece and kind of ruin it for me. I think he is an incredible dancer, but for some pieces it is not supposed to be about his personality -- but the theme of the dance. If he can't learn to control that, I think there are a lot of choreographers that wouldn't use him.

I'm still liking Lauren and Kent.

Not sure why, but Billy & Robert are now getting on my last nerve...I just don't even want to watch them dance, especially Robert. :confused3

I think Lauren should win.

I really thought a lot of the judges' critique was actually useful to the dancers this week. That's what it's supposed to be about.

Tonight's show was a lot to absorb. Lots of really good dancing to some not so memorable choreo.

I understand what Mia is trying to tell Kent about his expressions and actually I think it's valuable to him for a career in dance. However, I'm much more inclined to give him a pass on his expressions now that I realize Jose' is nearly 4 years older & they've been treating him w/ kid gloves. I believe it was Adam who made the comment previously about Kent having a Gene Kelly quality. Tonight's broadway number clicked the lights on for me. This kid is a great dancer. With some proper seasoning he has the potential to be a legend.

I do think the top 2 will be Kent & Lauren. IMO I'd have to give the edge to Lauren, but I don't think she can defeat the screaming tweens in their voting.
