Official Poly construction update thread **updated video page 103(2/17/15)**

Is Sunset Pointe going to be non existent? I love my DVC and the Poly, asking as Sunset Pointe was our wedding location however, and I'd be sad not to visit this when we always return:(

Hello all. I am new to this group. Thank you for all of the useful information. I am planning a trip to Disney the first week in April and we were scheduled to stay at the Polynesian. I am concerned with the construction, however I was going to overlook that, but now I hear the pool may be shut down. I know there is no concrete information at this time, but does anyone have any opinions on whether we should stay at the Poly or move to CR or GF? We are a family of 5 with 3 little kids who are going to want to swim.
Thanks so much.

It's personal preference, IMO, as some people don't mind going to another resort to swim, while others find it too much hassle and not worth it. I'm in the group that wouldn't find it feasible (for my family). The Poly is our favorite resort and I had a hard time not booking it for our March trip. Even though the construction wouldn't bother me in the least bit, we spend a lot of time at the pool and for us, it isn't worth it to be shuttled (or walk) over to the GF to swim. My feeling is that if I wanted to swim at that pool, I'd book that resort (which I actually did when I originally booked, then switched to the CR to try something new). I do think Disney does a very good job of accommodating their guests when construction and other things are going on at certain resorts, but for us, it isn't worth it to not be able to enjoy certain amenities of the resort we're staying at. With all of that said, with 3 little ones, I think I would go with the GF or CR and not have to deal with swimming somewhere else, especially if you will be spending a lot of time at the pool. Good luck, as I've been there and know how hard it is to make a decision.

Sadly yes. We were at the Poly a couple of weeks ago and construction has pretty much wiped out Sunset Point.

I am in a very similar situation - 2 little kids - 2 & 4 - we booked the trip and decided to stay at Poly but made some changes:

- requested the room facing quiet pool and checked the online pics of the swimming pool that will remain open

- with small kids, the small pool will be fine.

- we are going in low season hoping that crowds will not be an issue

- we scheduled our park days so in the event we want or need to escape the heat - we can go to the water park

why decided to stay?

- location, location, location --- easy access o EPCOT, MK via boat for our son, restaurants and character breakfasts.

I, too, am in a similar boat as the recent posters with little kids (pool important and location, etc.).

Our trip is Feb. 21 check-in and March 1 check-out. I've gone from POFQ (then found out pool is closed there during our trip) so switched to Poly (then found out about construction and possible pool closure) so switched to Wilderness Lodge (where things stand now) but now I'm very seriously considering switching back to Poly. I just can't get over how convenient the monorail to MK and to Epcot would be. We'll be at MK the most with our little ones of 5, 3, and 1.

Does anyone know of any updates on the potential Volcano pool closure for the dates we'll be there (Feb. 21 - Mar. 1)?

Thanks

Welcome to the Disboards!

It is a very personal decision as to whether or not you want to stay at the POLY during the construction and possible closures. Some people don't mind the upheaval, others do mind.

For what its worth, we changed to the CR for our trip this month. We loved the CR. With the unreliability of the monorail these days, it was great to be able to walk from the MK to the CR. We loved the huge, comfortable rooms and the view from the tower was amazing. Our granddaughter watched the MVMCP fireworks with us from our balcony. That was the highlight of our trip for us.

I went to visit the POLY while there and I was happy that I switched to stay at CR. The construction wasn't really that noticeable in some areas, but I would be upset if I were in a room where it was visible. Some people have to stay in these rooms where the impact is greater and we just didn't want to risk it. Also, the lobby seemed a bit shabby with stained carpets on the stairs, for example. I decided that it was probably time that the POLY was given a major overhaul. In a couple of years, when the work is finished, we will go back to the Poly again. Meanwhile, I am glad to have given it a pass for this trip.

When making the decision on where I want to stay I suggest asking "What is the worst case scenario if I choose to stay here? Will I be OK if this is what happens to me?" If the worst case scenario is something that I won't want to live with, then I change plans to somewhere that works better for us.

Construction has 3 possible negative effects: noise, inconvenience and atmosphere. These will be most evident during the daytime. If you spend the day out in the parks, the impact will be minimal. If you plan to spend a lot of time at the resort, there will be a larger impact.

There is a possibility that there will be construction such as what you are seeing now plus the themed pool will be closed and some work going on in the lobby area of the hotel. For me, that is too much disruption so I would opt to stay elsewhere during a visit to WDW for the next year or so. There are so many wonderful places to stay in WDW, you can hardly go wrong wherever you decide. We enjoy every one (and have stayed at them all, usually multiple times each).

Good luck choosing!

I was just there nov7-11 but there for race and didn't do my normal MK reports loop:( wow, I always sadly assumed we could return there for, pics as our daughter grew up
Darn should have made my DH pay for a wedding ceremony in front of the castle! Lol
Kidding so my sadness will be muffled....

We stayed at WL in April of this year. You can take a boat to MK and its even more fun than the monorail.:cool1:

if you decide to stay at WL - ask for room on left side and in the middle of the wing. why? easier access to your room from via side door and one flight of stairs - especially when you have to go up with one of your kids for any reason.

pool or no pool - we are staying at Poly in 2014 as mentioned above.

Stayed at poly last week for 8 nights in room 1515 Hawaii building. We booked garden view club level but were "upgraded" to a theme park view. Yes, we could see the castle over the big green fence and got a great view of the fireworks every night. The fence didn't bother us at all and the noise was minimal, all 3 of our children were able to nap mid day with no problems. I thanked the CM that checked us in because the view was amazing even with the construction. He thought I was joking and said they've had several complaints (even from people who have booked garden view and been upgraded). We didn't mind at all!

Thanks for he pictures! We check in mid dec and have cl tpv rooms booked. It's great to see the view is still amazing. We would be staying this trip regardless but I still like checking in here every so often to see what to expect. So thanks again. :)

A lot of new information has come out but unfortunately I was asked not to share it yet. Disney has been changing around plans and schedules a lot lately and none of this information will get down to the CMs at the resort or the Call Centers for quite a while. Its not that they want to keep it from you, they just don’t know what the plans are. Many of the plans for next year are changing to make way for other plans, so some things will be pushed off into 2015. I believe that from now until January the disruption will be about what it is now but once the new year starts there are many new things that can and will be going on all over the resort. No one is going to be able to tell you what will happen when until right before it happens and most of the time that is because they decide last minute to start a project.

Imagine my surprise to learn that the resort is a construction zone, after having sat on a reservation for late January/Early February 2014 for six months, and not a word from Disney about it!

I understand they've sent notifications to people who have April or later reservations. Yet, it sounds like some parts of the resort will be under renovation well before than. Some guest-impacting closures, like the pool, or GCM amentities, should be made known to the guests BEFORE it's too late to move to another hotel. As we're counting down the time between now and the tentatively scheduled pool closure on January 8th (re-opening in 12 days or 9 months, who knows?!?), you'd think Disney would tell us something!

Most hotels do not say anything about renovations or construction. The fact that Disney sent out anything is an oddity rather than the norm. I have never heard of another hotel getting a hold of guests about this kind of thing, We stayed at Portofino Bay and there was major construction including the concierge lounge (we were club level) and we knew nothing about it until we got there

Nope they are staying very quiet about things.

We have reservations in April and haven't received anything from Disney regarding construction. I wish someone who has received a letter or something from Disney would post it..... :confused3

We'd had December 2013 reservations in Hawaii with theme park view and received a letter around the first of October. Not wanting to "enjoy" a construction site view, we switched to CL at the Comtemporary. Of course the CM in reservations hadn't a clue. She thought that we were referring to room refurbishments and not the (at that time) imminent construction project.

We're booked for next week. Made our reservation at the beginning of September. Never received any notice from WDW about the construction. :confused3
