Official Poly construction update thread **updated video page 103(2/17/15)**

I am no pool construction expert but that looks like quite a bit of work to be "done by summer".
We are scheduled for check-in on 6.9 so it sounds like it will be a close call as to whether it will be completed.
Being able to go to Typhoon Lagoon sounds like a decent back up plan on our scheduled "pool" day.

The pool construction looks like it's nowhere near being done. We are staying in August and a pool is a must for us. I'm going to keep watching this and if it's not done by June I will book somewhere else.

I wouldn't worry. It's only a swimming pool. A construction crew can do a lot in a few weeks.

WDW drags its feet when they can. However, I do think they will have the pools open for the summer crowd. Too may people will ask to transfer from the resort if the main pool is closed when it is humid and 100 degrees. My guess is it will be done some time in April/May.

We got an email last week about the pool closure during our upcoming trip in March. It said we'd be given passes for Typhoon Lagoon.
Didn't they have a few days they were closing the water parks because it's too cold?

From what I was told by more than one CM, the problems started when they decided to do some work on the existing structure/pool. They uncovered unexpected problems that were pretty extensive, opening a can of worms so to speak. It was not their intent to delay the opening.

We also noticed they removed a lot of greenery and palms just outside the lobby in the back.

I've heard this too. I don't believe it. It is hard to imagine they discovered something unexpected under the Volcano pool. It's not that old. It was build in the early 2000's. I have to imagine they tested everything in 2001 when they built the original structure and tested it again in the last few years before they began construction on the replacement. What could they have possibly discovered? Oil? Ancient Indian Burial Ground? Jimmy Hoffa?

Tikiman posted the following on his Facebook page. Hopefully this helps people understand that no one really knows when the main pool construction will be completed.

His page also has a link to a video from MouseSteps showing the construction.

The question of when the Lava pool is going to open has been the #1 question lately. The worst part is depending on where you get your info (Disney web site, calling Disney Reservations or from Travel agent notices) you get a different date for when the pool will be done.

The Disney web site was updated from saying “March 2015” to “through Spring 2015”. People that have called the Polynesian phone number have been told different dates just in the last week. I have seen people say they were told mid-March, April 1, May 1 and some were even told late June. One person posted that a CM at the resort told them it was having problems and won’t be done until December. Keep in mind that the people you call when you call the Polynesian phone number are not at the resort and sometimes have never even been to the resort.

I have been keeping my mouth shut because the truth is no one will know when it will open until days before it does. If they tell you they know for sure, they are not telling you the truth. I say that because I get information from people at Disney involved in the project and construction crews. Even they don’t know for sure.

So what do I know? Well the end of last year I saw the construction schedule from the company doing the work. I have it up in front of me now. Looking at action items on the list it looks as if they planned to have the last few items completed on April 17. Now with that said the start date of that same action item that was to be done on April 17 was to begin this Wednesday. The Action item was the install of the fire pits, irrigation for the plants and install of showers, cabanas and signs. These items sound like things that would happen once the pools were done and all the cement work was completed. If you have seen the photos of the pool area from yesterday I think you would agree that they are nowhere near having the pools done and the cement poured for the pool deck area. So you decide how far behind they are on their own schedule. I would also expect at some point some delays due to weather unless it is perfect from now until the end of Spring. On the other hand I am sure they are pushing them to finish earlier. At best I would assume that push might bring them back to being done in mid-April or early May but that is a total guess on my part.

There was some information that sections of the pool area would open but I don’t see how that is possible. The pool area will have a wall and fence around it and opening access to that area but still having construction finishing things seems unrealistic to me.

Once the pool area is completed it will be a big part of making the resort a better place to visit but keep in mind, the construction is not over. The East pool area will be completely torn out and redone. This will be major construction in the middle of 5 longhouses. Other projects around the resort are likely to occur before the end of the year.

If there is anything we learned from all the construction over the last 2 years it is that no one has exact dates and sometimes we don’t know that things will close or reopen until days before or the day of. If you are trying to plan a trip you have to just ask yourself, will you be upset if you go to the Polynesian and there is construction going on or will you be more upset if you stay somewhere else and things open up at the Polynesian. No one can answer that question for you.

So it seems like once the main pool is done, the East pool, or quiet pool will be a big mess. This makes me very nervous as I am planning a "magical" vacation at the end of August, and I fear that because I have such a "magical" deal, the "deal" Will be a view of that construction. I'm guessing that everyone and their brother will request to not be looking at that, and understandably guests paying full price or closer to it will probably have a better shot at getting their requests met. Sadly, I think it might be time for us to jump ship to another resort.

*and yes, I am a "view" guy. Call me shallow. :rolleyes1I have a standard view booked, so I do not expect to be looking at the castle, but I would prefer not to look at a giant mess either. For some people view doesn't matter, for me it does.

The other thing to remember is the quiet pool is right on the way to the TTC, so that walkway will likely be torn up for some time to come. While they have made accommodations to bring you to the street, it's still a longer walk, and to pretty at all. That was one of my major complaints when I stayed there in December.

Tikiman makes a good point - that nobody knows when the Lava Pool will open. In February of 2014, we switched our reservation from Poly to BWI based on reports that the pool would be closed . . . and it was open. So we stayed at Poly in March/April of 2014 and found the construction at the time didn't bother us. We stayed there again last month and, because it was super cold (no swimming) and we were running marathon weekend events, the construction didn't bother us. We're booked again for Easter Weekend and we do need a main pool for that weekend. I understand the chances of the pool being open are low, and we're willing to jump ship and move our reservation elsewhere. So I'm monitoring availability at other resorts frequently . . . just can't quite jump ship yet until we're closer to our stay.

Hi everyone...We are booked for the first time at POly in November. Is there any idea of what the GH and pool will be like then? We really wanted to experience a monorail resort, but not at those prices for crazy construction. We visited (stayed AKL) in Sept, and the Poly was very underwhelming to me with all that was going on.

Yep, I just gave up my "magical" deal for October a few days ago and switched to the Boardwalk because I figured standard view had a good chance of a view of quiet pool. I'm sure everyone will be requesting a longhouse away from the construction. I'm just planning to wait until construction is completely done to stay at the Poly.

It has not been confirmed yet, but I put in a request with our travel agent to make a switch last night. Due to an upcoming blizzard tonight… (sigh, again)...My beloved and I had our valentines dinner last night, discussed it, and said that we really want to experience the Polynesian for the first time when it is at its best, so we do not walk away with a negative impression of it. So we will stay there at some point, just not this year.

Ok....done. As noted by our ticker, call us cowards, but we jumped ship to the CR. It's another resort we've never tried, and we know the resort will be fully up and running, and know exactly what kind of view we're going to get. Call me boring, but I like predictability.
As DP said, we WILL stay at the Polynesian at some point in the future, when it is done, just not on this go around, but it was nice planning it while it lasted!

I think that's a smart call. Have fun!

I am no expert. From what I have read, it seems most if not all the construction other than the east pool will be done by November. Once the volcano pool and GCH area are completed, the resort will have a significantly better feel than what you experienced in September. However, each person is different. What one person may enjoy, another person dislikes.

WDW News Today has the concept art for the volcano pool and the kiddie pool going in.

So I read Scott's post and thought, yeah, we need to jump ship and go to CR . . . or maybe BC or YC or BWI. But then I saw the photo, above, again and thought maybe we'll hang on a little longer . . . Tikiman summarized it well by saying we all need to decide which would bother us more - Poly without the new pool or not staying at Poly when the new pool just opened. I'm not sure. In my opinion, Poly is the most convenient resort for proximity of room to pool - no long hallways, no elevators, no large resort complex. In recent years, we've stayed in either Hawaii or Samoa and it couldn't be easier to take a swim break. While I don't want to give that up, it's looking likely that it won't exist over Easter weekend.

Edited to add: We jumped ship and booked CR - Tower BLV. It may be temporary, but the thought here is that we'd secure the CR room and then, if it looks like Poly is likely to open up by our 5-day mark, we'll try to switch back. When I called, the phone CM said they are still hoping for end of March, but Easter weekend is firmly in the "we're not sure" camp.

Well, it is official. Add us to the list of Poly ship jumpers. I now have confirmation that our "magical" deal has been switched to BC. We were just too nervous as this is is our first onsite stay and we don't want a bad experience.

I'm so torn. I understand why everyone is jumping ship. I think I'll hold out for a bit longer. Partly because we're a party of five now. So my options for one room that sleeps five are limited. We're only staying three nights at the Poly before we move to the BC. I really want an MK resort for those nights, so it's Poly, CR, or the WL. I don't think GF would be anyone's cup of tea, so I'm not considering that one. My preference is the Poly, then WL. WL would require two rooms, or a deluxe room. So for now, I'll stick with the Poly and see how the construction progresses. Without a main pool, we'll switch. But I'm like Scott. If my view is going to be just construction, I'm not interested, no matter how good the deal. View is important to me.
