OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Well, I've had a discouraging few days - wednesday and thursday morning rain while in low 40's - no thank you, I'm not running in that - so did 30 day shred. then it snowed last night and I woke up to all roads/sidewalks completely covered in ice - so another day of 30 day shred. I think I'll have to get a treadmill this weekend - I can only run at 5 am and it's just not safe to do so. I was really hoping I would make it to january before snow/ice but I guess I was fooling myself!

For those of you with HBO, check out the current episode of Real Sports. They have a segment about obsessive runners. It's fascinating.

Cool episode! My wife says that I am obsessed with running, I am not that bad though.

Since this will be my first race I don't have a race time to submit. I did find a 10mile race but it would be on Dec 26th. I wasn't to sure about that run, was concerned that with my luck I would hit a patch of ice and twist my ankle or something. After a bit of looking I did find a 10k Nov 5th. Looks like that will be my first race run. Only downside is that it is after the Nov 1st cut off date for emailing run-disney with proof of time. So, guess I'll have to wait until the expo to try moving coral. I will probably try to email them anyways. What's are they going to say, wait until the expo to change times.

Doing it at the expo is no problem really. I did it a couple years ago and it took all of about 2 minutes. Went from the back up to Coral A. Maybe i just got there at a good time but there was no line at all to do it.

Welcome! This is the perfect place for a question like that.

There will be park music in the parks and usually a DJ playing music somewhere along the course with a marching band or two along the course as well. I seem to recall a drum corps, too.

My nephews High School Marching Band will be playing during the Half Marathon this year. Last year he helped hand out water volunteering with the Boy Scouts.

I'm signed up for my 1st 1/2 for this race, as I just started running this past March.

Everyone keeps saying 11/1 but this I found this on the Run Disney website under FAQs...

"What if I have a better proof of time than when I first registered?
Please email your updated proof of time (include the race you registered for, your official race time, along with the year and name of the race) to disneysports@trackshack.com by November 15, 2011. After November 15, all proof of time updates must be made during the Expo at the Runner Relations booth."

Hoping that date is right as I'm doing my 10K on November 13th in Celebration.

Doesn't surprise me that there are two different dates on the website then. This is taken from under the registration section:
"If you do not provide proof of time at the point of registration or acquire it after you have registered, then email this information to disneysports@trackshack.com before November 1, 2011. After November 1, 2011 you will need to bring proof of your estimated finish time to the Runner Relations booth at the Expo if you wish to have your start corral placement changed. If you listed a race result as proof of time when registering online, then you do not have to do anything further."

Guess, we'll find out soon enough.

I don't mind not being able to move corrals until the expo, I just would like to have that checked off the list and not need to be concerned about getting it done there.

I like the gels over the chomps or shot bloks. I usually use Gu gels, or Clif gels during training depending on what my next race is providing. The only other fuel I really care for besides the gels are sports beans. I usually alternate taking GU and sports beans at every other aid station during a race.

I have tried the gels, Clif Shots, Gu Chomps and Sport Beans. Have not found anything that I liked that did not upset my stomach. Instead, I use gummy bears and died mango during my runs. I know one lady who uses small packets of peanut butter and honey.

Does anyone plan on going out with a pace team?

My plan is to join the 4:30 pace group to help me attain my goal of walking down my first marathon time, 4:56:16, from this year's marathon. Will only be going Goofy in January instead of Dopey like this past year.

JohnVN, do you race walk? Your walking is faster than my running! :goodvibes

I'm doing Dopey for the 2nd time, and hoping we won't have 2010's weather. brr!!
Did a 10 mile race yesterday...not too bad, but I am sore, because I RAN it, instead of treating it like a supported long run. But that's not a bad thing. It does give me more confidence for upcoming Goofy. I'm a Gallowalker and will just run and walk my way around.

The only issue with doing a change at the expo is that, I believe, you lose the personalized bib. All the bibs have your name on them, and it can be pretty cool when someone yells your name, especially when you aren't expecting it.

I've only seen them hand out stickers to affix on your bib to cover your initial corral placement letter with your new corral. I haven't seen new bibs issued.

Let me say my mind is trashed, I just got in from my 18 mile run/walk.

When I first read this, I was thinking a 4 1/2 min mile. Wow this guy is good.

My question...the pace groups, are they in a certain corral and how would I know where to meet up with one? A 4:30 marathon would be great for me, I think. I'm am horrible about pace right now...first mile today 9:04 last 12:04. Actually the first 16 miles were pretty even..after that first mile around 10.

Usually pacers have something they will hold up in the air, like a sign on a stick, maybe with balloons or something else colorful on it. Can you imagine running 26.2 miles holding a sign up in the air?! I sure can't!

The pacers just amaze me. I remember watching a lot of the finish of the Cincinnati Flying Pig in 2010, and watching the pacers come in. They were in pairs, taking turns holding their signs up, and they came in, pair after pair, EXACTLY on time. They impress me!

I don't believe you have to do anything special. Just look for the guy with the sign and do all you can to stick with him.

Have fun!

Hey cool! I'm doing the half with my husband (a Goofy!), so we'll be sure to watch for the band and send them lots of cheers and thanks. What is their school?

Finished Oct with 183 running miles, as long as my feet hold up I should be on pace for Goofy.

That last sentence didn't make much sense...but if you are slowing down that much over your long run, try starting out slower. Hang in there!

I've been sort of using the McMillan running calculator to plan my training and racing paces...so far it has been pretty good. Long run pace is pretty easy/slow, but I had really good correlation between my last 5K race and 10 mile race.

Betsy, wish I was a race walker but only a speed walker.

I also remember seeing a sticker over the original corral designation.

The pacers are awesome and it's hard to miss the huge pace signs at Disney.
