OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Please help?
I have been having some ankle issues this week. I have a weird bruise like feeling on the side of my left ankle right between the ball of my ankle and Achilles tendon. It doesn't hurt unless i push on it or if i bend it really far sideways. My roommate said it was my Achilles and to stretch it a lot...but I just want to make sure its nothing bad. It was better after I took a day off running, but right after my 5k Saturday it started hurting again. But like I said its almost like a bruise that only hurts when I touch it...

Thanks guys!

You should! I'm thinking of doing the DC Rock n Roll this spring after the Disney marathon.

Did u run the VA Beach this weekend too? What a great time!

Thanks!!

Thanks! It's the Rock n Roll Competitor Series that holds the event. They hold races across the country (Vegas, DC, Philly, etc) and they have bands along the course. No huge names along the course, but some were kids in local bands which was very cute! They also did a concert series that weekend, bands along the VA Beach boardwalk. The big groups after the race were Tonic and Bret Michaels (yes THE Bret Michaels!).

I highly recommend!

I'm enjoying everyone's hydration stories. I need to start figuring out what to eat, when. I have to start trying out some of the gels and stuff.

fyi - it's probably totally different since it's bought out by rock and roll - but i ran that race last year when it was the national half, and it was basically the biggest mess of a race i've ever run. i was put in the completely wrong corral (like...my goal was around 2 hrs, and ppl in my corral were saying they were hoping to break 2:30...so lots of congestion for me at the start), promised shuttles at the host hotel were non-existent, virtually no mile markers (thank goodness for garmins), had to literally stop and wait for water at the stations, took me at least 20 mins to get out of the congestion at the finishers chute, etc. if rock and roll fixes all the logistic issues i would run it again...but right now i'm playing the wait-and-see game

Hey, thanks for the info!! I was thinking of doing the Run for Chocolate 15k in DC in December but saw lots of negative reviews about the company's race in Chicago (and bc you had to pick up the packet the day before the race which would be too much of a hassle) so I ended up not registering.

I'm going to wait and see as well. I'd like to see how marathon training goes for awhile anyway and maybe look into registering in November. I was really happy with the race organizers for VA Beach (the rock n roll). We stayed at the host hotel, there were nice meals at decent prices, food the morning before and day of the race (gatorades, water, etc.) but who knows right? It's a big investment financially too.

Thanks for the heads up!!

You need to see a Sports Medicine Doctor ASAP. If it is your achilles, you don't want to mess with it. I have a shortened achilles tendon and there are times when stretching your achilles, especially when it is injured is not a good idea. In the mean time, I would use the RICE method - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation method until you see a doctor. It is very concerning that you would have pain after 3.1 miles...so don't wait and get an appointment.

Sending good thoughts!! :)

I did the half in both 2009 and 2010. The 2009 event was my favorite half to date, including Disney. The 2010 was a disaster. I don't know if 2009 was a good fluke or 2010 was a bad fluke but I'd do it again. I'm not sure what my spring schedule looks like but I would do it again and hope for another 2009-like experience.

I didn't even notice the lack of mile markers because I went by my watch and I think the shuttle issue would be the hotel's fault, not the races. The biggest problem for me was the Metro not opening early enough. We stayed with a friend's brother who is in the secret service. Had he been working or with the President out of town getting to the start would have been a much bigger problem.

Agreed...didn't love the organization of the race, but it wasn't that bad for me. Can't beat running through DC - mile markers or not. I am sure Rock n Roll will work out the kinks with little problem. Me? I'm already registered to give the race another try! I was the first to register in the state of DE, so they refunded my entry fee. Call me Miss Delaware!

I had something similar (there's a smaller less obvious bump just below my ankle bone that I guess shoes just happen to press against). I would get it checked out for sure by a doctor who knows athletes' feet. Mine wasn't exactly sure what my issue was but there's a few tendons that run past the ankle and under the foot which he thinks were getting pinched and were tight. There wasn't a lot he could offer me in terms of solutions but it's always good to know what might be the issue before trying to fix it.

Does anyone have a map or something similar with the route for the 5K of years past? Does the course change often from year to year? DBF is thinking about doing it and I wanted show him the type of race he'd be doing if he did the 5K.

Thanks guys, I'm going to go get it checked out just to make sure. My dad has really bad knees, so maybe I'll get those checked out too to see if I will have the same problems...I always try to be careful running because of those genetic issues. Nothing will keep me from running the Relay though! Maybe it will just keep me from running the Donald too :( We will see, thanks for the info guys!

This is a rough approximation of the 5K that preceded the Princess ½ marathon in February. Of course everything can change and they may reroute the course, but this is close.

(Sorry I am not as good as Coach at drawing routes/courses)

Neither program came out to the exact distance, but fairly close.

Thanks, Todd! We didnt' think the World Showcase was 5K so it was great to see how they added to the route to encompass the full distance. :thumbsup2 You did just fine, in my books, in mapping it out.

Where has he been?

Maybe Run Disney did the smart thing and replaced their run advisors with him and he hasn't been allowed to leave yet.

Ok keeping up with week 3 of my training schedule so far.......
This will be my first 1/2 marathon & I will be walk/running.
I have a question...........time doesn't start until your chip crosses the start line right? Because if it starts when everybody else starts & you are in the last corral then that would mean the slower people would have even less time to finish on time?

Yes. Your chip time starts when you cross the start line and that is the time which is the time that counts.

You're correct. Your time starts when your chip crosses the start line. Good luck with your first half! That was me four years ago. I've been hooked ever since. :)

I wanted to point out though that to 'finish on time', the time used isn't your personal chip time but the time of the last person whose chip crosses the start line.

If you're in corral A and you start (exagerating) 1.5 hours a head of the last person to cross the start line. You have the minimum 3.5 hours plus your extra 1.5 hours to finish. They don't evaluate everyone individually to make sure you did it in under 3.5 so the further up in the corrals you are, the more extra time you have to finish.
