Will we see you for the DL ½ over Labor Day or in WDW for the Wine & Dine ½? I forget...

Gotcha. Thanks! Now I have to decide whether to run, and whether the half or the full... Maybe I'll save the full for the 20th anniversary and do the half this time around! :) hmmm.

If you do the half this year and the full next year you will get two anniversary medals. That would probably be my choice.

Ok so I am kind of a beginner when it comes to running, I started running in races a little over a year ago. My first 2 half marathons were at the disney weekend in January and the Princess in February. I am thinking about doing the Donald 1/2 and the Relay 1/2 back to back this year and am trying to get some feedback as to whether thats a good idea or not. I have always been very active and love doing outdoor activities. I can finish the half marathon in about 3 hours and am keeping up with my training for January to hopefully beat last years times. I read on this forum that I should run a few longer runs 2 days in a row to teach my body to run when its tired, so I have been doing that as well. Does anyone have any input on whether or not I am crazy for wanting to try this or if I will fail miserably?? haha

Thanks!

It really depends on your level of fitness and your expectations. I think most people capable of running a half can do back to back halves if they adjust their pace for both. If you go for a PR in the first race you might have trouble in the second unless you are willing to walk it.

I do think doing back to back long runs is a good idea and if I were going to try to do the halves back to back I would just train for a marathon. In my marathon training I had days that were 8 miles, 10 miles, 8 miles on three consecutive days. I'd probably make some adjustments and do at least one back to back 10 mile combination but once you are up to 17-20 mile long runs doing back to back 13's at a slower pace isn't really that daunting.

Different people will train differently but that is how I would handle it. The one thing I do think is crazy about the idea is the cost involved because I think Disney is really overpriced for what you get. Of course I still did 3 of the marathon weekend runs but they are less and less worth the price.

That sounds like a good idea. I dont mind walking in the races at all, I enjoy all the disney scenery and characters along the race. I am thinking about trying the full marathon next year since its the 20 year anniversary and since this year is the 15 yr anny for donald and the new relay I figured it would be a good way to keep up with training for 2013. The price doesnt bother me because I probably wont be doing it again anyway...but I love disney so I'm willing to pay.

Yeah, this would be great! I am a sucker for medals. Now I just have to run the numbers and see what this grand plan does to my budget... ha ha.

I'm kind of a beginner too. I started running in early 2010 and did my first half in Sept 2010. I just did my second half and will be doing my first FULL in October.

I might be a bit insane, but I signed up to run the Goofy. Im following the plan, and by the time I run it I will have two years of running under my belt and three halfs and a full over the span of two years.

I plan on doing a weekend or two close to the race where I will do a ten miler on a Sat and then a sixteen miler the next day on Sunday so I can get used to the back to back distances.

HOWEVER, Im not going into this to set any PRs or anything like that. I will probably just take it easy (with some walking breaks) during both of them and just enjoy the scenery and characters along the way!!:)

Just worked on my calendar at work today (I don't do much, lol.) It looks like my "official" training start is Sept. 13th. That is the 16 week point (actually 17 but I am taking a week off Thanksgiving to go to Universal, hopefully I can get in a couple of miles there) which is how the program I am going to follow goes.

I am already dreading the "cold" running ( I know it is nothing compared for you people up north.) I think I would rather run in the 100+ temps I am running in now than the 30's and 40's in December.

Good luck on everyone's training.

Homer

Any East coasters going to be messed up with this hurricane coming? Storm looks like it'll hit the MD area tomorrow night so my morning run will probably just be wet. Suppose to do a three miler on Sunday and I'm pretty worried about that one. I should have gotten out this morning but I had no idea it would be this bad. AND I was suppose to have the VA Beach Half next weekend.

Hopefully you'll all just stay safe!

I find it hard, physically hard, to run in temps below 40. Its hard for me to breathe, so Im not looking forward to training for Goofy during a New England Winter.:scared1:

All systems go for training! I am looking forward to getting in some more serious training now. I like the cold weather work, but could do with the "just right" for me temps--still cooler, just not freezing.

Happy training everyone!

We start our training in a few weeks, then we go on a cruise:lmao:
Anybody run on the freedom of the seas?
Weve only ever run on the magic and wonder.

So if I calculated correctly, we have 19 weeks until the marathon (my first). I have settled on a plan...Hal Higdon's Marathon 3. I have used his programs some in the past. I"m reading Born to Run ,again, to try and build my mental game. The distance scares me..I know I can do it, but my competitive side wants to do well. And "well" is a relative term as we all have our own goals. So, I'll put my goals out there...4 1/2 hours would be great, but I think I would be ok with 5 hours.
I have a 10 day trip planned in Sept...so training is tweeked a bit and I'm not sure how to get the last runs in at Christmas time...but feel if I have done the rest of the work all will work out.
Weather looks good for my 10 miler in the morning..happy training!

I ran my first marathon yesterday, and after swearing that I was going to drop out of every other marathon I've signed up for while I was suffering through the final miles, I decided on a compromise. The race I ran was constant hills, and that really took a toll on my legs, especially since I didn't train hills like I should have. I'm thinking the total elevation change at Disney is about the same as one or two of the hills I ran yesterday, so instead of swearing off marathons forever, I'm going to save any marathon runs for Disney. If I'm going to suffer through the final miles of a marathon I might as well do it at my happy place. I'm actually anxious for January now so I can see how different this marathon is compared the what I ran.

What do you guys think about an ice bath post race?

Does it work? DO you do it?

Yes, they work, and yes, I use them. As soon as I get home from a race or even a longer long run, I'll throw on a sweatshirt and hop in. I stay in for 10-20 minutes, and it make a real difference in how fast I recover and how good I feel that afternoon and the next day. If you don't want to do it as a bath, a good alternative is to stand in a tall trash can.

I am a huge fan of the ice bath. Any run over 10 miles gets one, and I don't have any aching really. In fact, after Goofy, I was perfectly fine walking around the parks both days and then, for days afterwards. I could even do stairs! :thumbsup2
