OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Fellowship9798 I guess if you'll be at WDW by Thursday and are willing to spend the money and get up early a 3rd consecutive day, then Dopey may work for you. 5K is less than a days's park walk, for sure! I'm doing Goofy, but don't plan to do the 5k. It doesnn't draw me enough to want to spend the money.

Tinkerboy00 Congrats for signing up for Goofy (I am postponing til the day bfore price goes up!) and I'll give a "WISH wave" when I pass thru Framingham next Monday (gulp!)

slapwhitey Oh, yes, running outside. I bet for sure you were running faster than indoors. I also have no sense of pace. I can run pretty consistnetly once I have the pace, but definitely need some external reminder (yeah Garmin) to get me to home on on what I want to run. Also, pavemnt is different than treadmill--hardness, evenness, roll of surface. You were working harder. You might want to consider a Garmin to help with your pacing outdoors. Yo don't want to wear yourself out during training!

RadioFanatic Yeah for the miles, sorry about the pants!

LilySending healing vibes your way. And since we may take the "under" route driving to Boston, I'll be able to send them from a closer distance!

buckeycinderella Congrats on your scary first step. You are not alone. 3 years ago when I started running, I signed up for the Minnie 15k before I had run any kind of race and before I could even run 2 miles without stopping. So I know what you mean about using it for motivation. But it will all work out. As long as you take one training day at a time.

I signed up for the marathon! 2 years ago I "ran" my first 5k and couldn't even finish a mile of it. Then I started getting into running, determined to better myself. Then, I got pregnant. Well, here I am 8 months after giving birth to our first child and determined to do this thing!

I haven't been to Disney since I was in 7th grade and my husband has never been so this will be a great experience for all of us!

I teared up watching the videos of marathons past- the magic, the fireworks, everything seems so special! I can't wait!!! I want it to be August already so I can start training for real and know that its only 20 weeks away!

Good luck everyone! :dance3:

Oh, does anyone know if (or when this info is available) they are going to have a Marathon Monday ticket? And is it upgradable to hopper?

I haven't heard anything about marathon monday for 2012 yet but I would plan on it again. I don't think they would take it away after one year. They make lots of money by everyones families hitting the parks during a slow time of year. Last years was good only for one park and not upgradable. Good luck traing. My wife and I ran our first marathons together at this race.very emotional finish. Priceless.

Before I decide if I do the Goofy or not, I have a question. There is a possibility that a friend would like to do the relay with me. What will happen if she decides not to come, will I get a medal for running my part of the relay or if both of us have to finish to get our medal??

The DH and I are debating on going for the Half for the first time in 2012. I've done the Princess Half for the last two years and loved it, but really want to try something new for next year. Of course it all depends on my hubby doing it with me...if he decides not to, then I'll probably go with the Princess again. Of course with the Half being so much larger, that makes me a little nervous!

For those who've done both the Half and the Princess, aren't the courses the same? Are the characters and entertainment the same, or close, as well?

You will have to complete the race to get the medals, not just one segment of it. As long as you know that your partner won't be coming by November 15th you'll be able to substitute in another runner or, if the half isn't full to capacity, transfer to the half marathon instead. You'll still run 13.1 but you won't need to rely on a partner.

Thank you Frank for the fast answer. I will try to find a partner that I am sure I can count on.

G0 Habs GO :yay:

Well, here we are almost a month from when I signed up for the Full and I am feeling great! The IT Band pain from January's half seems to be totally gone (knocking on wood!).

I have been doing weeks 1-4 of the Jeff Galloway plan and have done every run except for 1. I am getting myself and my kids prepared for what the future holds:yay::yay: I will just repeat it again for the next month.

And most importantly my DH has decided he will join me (he swore he would NEVER do a full again):cloud9::love::cloud9:

I still can not believe we are really doing to do this!!

Hi Fellow Disers - I had a friend ask me today about what the 'discount code' is for registering for the marathon in Jan is, she asked me because she assumed since I am a total Disney fanatic, I would know where to find it, so here I am. She said there was a place on the registration page for the code and it saves her $10 or $20 of race registration fees. I tried to search this thread and kind of got confused... anyway, can any of my fellow Dis friends help me help her? Thanks for reading....:thumbsup2

There was a discount if you signed up and paid with the Disney VISA card. I think it was $25. Don't think you needed a code.

DVC sent an e-mail yesterday with a $10 and $20 discount for DVC members, which does require a code. Perhaps this is what your friend was talking about?

So happy to find this thread. Ramping up to train for the 2012 WDW 1/2 marathon. Planning on doing the Harrisburg Half or the Hershey Half and a bunch of 5K / 10K 's to train. Just finished my first 5K of the season this weekend (35:01).

I signed up for the Goofy, my DD for the Donald, and DW and DS are going to do the relay. DD's boyfriend is going to do the 5K.

I think we have all of our bases covered.

Happy that we have so many getting in on the weekend.

I will be a bit derailed since I get arthroscopic knee surgery. Hoping to get it over with soon so I can get back at this training thing I started.

After much deliberation, I took the plunge and registered for the Half today. I can't wait! :yay:

Doing long runs slowly....

I have to admit, even though I have done the half 6 times, I have always done my long runs at the same pace as my short runs (hmmmm, could this be the reason I am always injured??). So, as I get into my routine for training for the Full next year, I am making the effort to do my long runs slowly.

So far I am really loving it, I am having to really think about my pace, which makes the running go by so much faster:thumbsup2

Lily~I hope all goes well with your knee!!

When I was training for my second HM (NYC in March), I did my long runs by time rather than distance. My running club's coach thought that most of my IBT flares were likely cause not so much by going further than I had before, but by going longer than I had before, and he suggested the switch. I found it to be a good one. I was shooting for a 2:45:xx in HM #2, so we made my longest long run 2:30:xx. I wasn't worried about my pace other than keeping it easy and "conversational". I ended up covering 12.1 miles, only 1 mile short of a HM (And my 2nd HM finish? 2:40:xx (can't remember the seconds at the moment)). By contrast, when training for my 1st - the Disney HM - my long run was 10 miles. Which I finished in about 2 hours. Meaning that for the final 47:38 I was on the course in WDW, my legs were in unknown territory.

I've gone through my planned training plan for the WDW FM and essentially converted my long runs into times rather than distances with the longest being 5:30:xx since my target finish time (based on HM times plugged into calculators) is in the 5:30:xx-5:45:xx range.

It might be worth it to explore long runs by time just to see how you do with that.

I have heard about/been thinking about doing that, thanks for your "story" of doing it that way. I figure once I get up to the 20 mile long run, running 2 min per mile slower, put me out running for an extra 40+ mins each run :scared1::scared1::scared1:
