OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

That is why there is always at least one trip to the woods before the race starts for me :thumbsup2.

When we are walking to the start line from the Epcot Parking Lot? Is that the wooded area you refer to? Because as soon as you start running you are out of trees. At the Princess, quite a few ladies just went by the side of the road. When you have to go, you have to go I guess!

Hi Everyone,

So I was all signed up for the Half in January but I'm not going to be able to make it now since my wife and I are expecting our first baby in January! I'm still training for the race though and I was wondering if anyone has ever done that kind of distance on a treadmill? I was hoping to maybe run on my treadmill that day so I could still meet my goal of finishing a half marathon in January.

Also, I have heard that you can transfer your registration fee to next year's race if something comes up...does anyone know how I could go about doing that?

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for your help!

You should run the NYC Marathon. You can pee off the bridge at the start apparently - or at least a lot of men supposedly do just that. :confused3

I've just heard you DON'T want to be on the lower level of the bridge.

At the beginning of the race there are alot of places to duck into the bushes. I am slow so can't wait in port a pottie line ups. Actually even along most of the course there are alot of bushes, just being girls we have to go back quite a bit;)

You are a brave girl! :thumbsup2 I know lots of people do it, but I just can't bring myself to peeing in the bushes. I think I have a shy bladder or something.

Ya one thing I am not is shy. What makes it even more of a challenage is our WISH shirts really stick out even in the dark:thumbsup2

Unfortunatley I just don't have the time to spare for port a potties so kinda have no choice:rolleyes1

I do nearly all my training on the treadmill. It just sucks because the gym has their machines set to only allow an hour at a time. You lose your money either way - if you cancel or you defer to the next years race because you still have to pay the next year entry fee. I don't see the point of deferring to a guaranteed spot for next year because it isn't like there wouldn't be a spot...there is still availability now.

Thanks for the help, guys! I have to say I'm a little disappointed that my funds can't transfer to next year's race and it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to defer to a guaranteed spot for next year since this year isn't even full yet.

I probably should have read all the fine print but I was so excited to sign up months ago that I never even thought about what would happen if I couldn't make it...oh well! Next year I'll be able to attend marathon weekend with my wife and one year old daughter, so I can't complain!

Thanks again!

There's also the issue of what swamp critters could be living in those bushes as well. Don't go to far in or you might be a gator's breakfast!

This year is not a normal year for the registratration with the races. In the past years, the races have sold out by the middle of the summer. A guaranteed spot might be a good thing for next year, especially if the economy picks up and people are more willing to part with their money.

You can train on a treadmill but I wouldn't recommend it. I see you are in Phily, I'm in Cleveland so our winters are comparable. With some winter running gear you can still train outdoors. There are days when there is too much ice and I have to run on the treadmill but those days aren't the majority.

The thing with running on a treadmill is that you are not using your leg muscles the same as running on the street. On a treadmill you are moving your legs to keep up with the belt while on the street you are using your legs to propel you forward. If all you do is treadmill running you might have some issues come race day.

All of that being said it is possible even if it isn't ideal. A friend of mine did all her Boston training on a treadmill last year but I can't imagine doing my 20 mile long run on one (as shudder goes down spine).

I think the weather had a lot to do with it too. it was so darn cold last year, I almost didn't re sign up this year! If the weather is nice this time around I think it will fill up a lot quicker. (crossing my fingers for temps in the 50's!)

This is the exact reason that I'm doing the half and not the full. I was diagnosed with Raynaud's (secondary to Lupus) and I am not able to train outdoors in our winters. I know that there is no way that I'd be able to properly train for a full marathon on a treadmill.

There have been quite a few examples of Olympic Qualifiers that did nearly all their Marathon training on a treadmill for various reasons. The key is adding incline to your training. I do the hill program for my shorter runs at a higher level (I do the Hal Higdon Training program for Novices) and then was told to keep the incline for all other training days between 1.5 - 2.5. My mistake last time was that I didn't incorporate nearly as much incline and hills into my training program. I find that training on the treadmill is a lot more difficult because it isn't as interesting.

Oh, I know that *PEOPLE* can train on a treadmill, I just know that *I* cannot. It is more a mental thing than anything (it is boring - as you point out). That and the fact that I don't own my own treadmill and most gyms get annoyed if you use one for 4+ hours.

I didn't mean to reply to you - I meant to reply back to the poster that asked about treadmill training. It isn't for everyone but since I can only run most of the time at night, I feel a lot safer at my YMCA which doesn't mind me running on the treadmill for extended periods of time. I just have to reset the machine every hour. We also have an indoor running track which comes in handy.

There are options for everyone - just because you can't run outside 100% of the tiime doesn't make you any less prepared for running a full or half marathon. :yay:

Hey everyone,

I just signed up on disboards to get in on the fun. I registered for the 1/2 back in July and I'm getting far too excited to run this. I did my first 1/2 marathon in June and a 10-miler in September. I have a 5k on January 1/11 before leaving for Orlando for this event. I'm also looking at running the 1/2 in DL to get the coast-coast medal.

I read this entire thread in two sittings and I'm excited at how enthusiastic everyone is. I'll bookmark this thread as well as a few others to get myself accustomed to this forum.

Hello everyone.

I have officially signed up for the 1/2 marathon in Jan. Super excited and super nervous. With that said, I am contemplating signing up for the 5k run too. My theory is there is no way I can do the full goofy, but I am still a little goofy. LOL

Early Spring I started the C25K and finished it with a breeze. I enjoyed it so much that I signed the family up for the Halloween 5k run in Disney. I loved it but I really want a disney marathon under my belt, so my DW gave my an early Christmas gift last week and I signed up for the 1/2 Marathon.

As for training. I have continued with the running and I try to run 3 times a week. A short run, long run and a quick run.

For a short run I try and run 6-8 miles
Long run is anything over 10 miles
and a quick run is 3.5 miles under 30 min. (I know for a lot of you that isn't that quick, that is why I am working on it)

I also use the interval running. usually 10 min run with 1 min walk. It seems to work the best for me. I use my iphone and the run keeper app to guide me through the intervals.

My concerns with that is I live in Central Canada and our winters are...well Canadian!! LOL, I am not sure what I am gonna do, other than try and run out doors for as long as I can, and if I can't I will use the elliptical to continue the training.

Our local running store, has a resolution 5k run on Jan 1 and the family is signed up for it too.

Looking forward to seeing ya at the race.
Bryan.
