OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

Pumbaa80 - if u dont mind my asking, what inserts were you using? I ran 4.3 miles for the 2nd time this week and my knees are a little sore so I'm on the lookout for something to help with that. Thanks!

I don't mind, at all! They're "Superfeet." Hope you find something that helps!

I'm having a heck of a time with these new shoes and inserts. I really wish I hadn't gotten rid of my old shoes. Now that I've removed the superfeet inserts, the shoes are more comfortable, but they just feel big. I know the people at the running store know much more about this stuff than I do, but I liked my smaller shoes! :confused3

Okay. I think I can officially announce my first marathon! I signed up for the Disney marathon. There. Now I can't chicken out. I had a physical and my dr says I'm fine. No chickening out - right? I've been running for 3 years. My first half was the Disney half last year. It was AWFUL!!! The weather was absolutely horrible - snow, sleet, and rain, and long lines for our DRY clothes (seriously - an HOUR?!?!). I was sobbing at the end. And, yet, I continue to run. And, run at Disney. . .

Here are our plans. Stay at Windsor Hills for the week of the marathon. Here are my roomies who are running:

DH: First Half Marathon
Ds14: First half marathon
DS13: 5K (He's run MANY before)
DS10: 1 mile (he's run a lot of 5Ks, but wants to take it easy this go-round)
Dd4: 1 mile (how cute is that????!!)
Sister: GOOFY! Crazy girl!!
ME!!! My FIRST FULL MARATHON

Then, we'll be staying at POR for 4 nights with FREE dining. Suckers!! Disney hasn't met my two teenagers and one pre-teen (and me and my after-race appetite) and their appetites yet!! LOL

Anyway, I'm doing a walk-run. I'll be running the Detroit Half in October and a local run in MI in Sept. I'm up to an 8 mile run so far. Tell me I'll be fine!!!???

LOL! your post had me rolling. Disney half was my first half, and I too was sobbing after! I was warm while I was running, but once I stopped, my body FROZE and I was numb. The walk from the end of the race to the monorail was the most miserable 10 minutes of my life. I wanted to go fast b/c it was cold, but I couldn't go fast b/c I hurt SO BAD! I just cried as we walked. so awful lol!!! I am running the full this year for my first, crossing my fingers it will be warmer!

Welcome back....

For some reason I did not see the long lines for the bag pickup - but did read about a few folks.

Sounds like you guys have a full weekend planned.

Thanks. The long line was our section of the alphabet only. We were joking about blaming our husbands for our last names the entire time. I think it was K-L whose lines were WAY too long. It was horrible. The race was GREAT! I finished and had a great time. But, afterward I was cold and wanted my dry clothes and had to wait. In the rain. In 30 something degree weather. We couldn't stop shaking. And, then, we were told we couldn't change anywhere but in the port-a-potties! Um. No! So, I went to the tent where they were selling dry clothes and bought $100 worth of stuff and changed RIGHT.THERE!!! LOL IN.THE.STORE!!! It's definitely a memory I'll never forget.

Hate to spoil a good thing but the W-Z tent is never full. And no, no one ever really checks if you are in the correct line/tent.

My Marathon training officially began this week and I just did my 1st official Marathon Training Long Run:woohoo: It was just a 6 miler, but I'm trusting Hal Higdon that I'll get to 26 on race day! No backing out now.

I am hoping to run WDW 2012 as my first marathon, assuming I don't do NYCM 2011. I have a question though. I see Jeff Galloway just uploaded his 18 week plan to RunDisney.com, and his training goes up to a 29 mile long run before you taper. I've NEVER seen that it any plan before. What are the advantages, if any, of going almost three miles PAST a marathon distance, in training, especially if you're going to be on your feet for 5 or more hours?

I checked that out, too. At first I thout it was some sort of Goofy training but it appears to be a training program for experienced runners looking to maximize their time. I'll pass.:rotfl2:

Nope, no turning back now! It looks like you've got a good group around you so you should be fine. I wish I could get a family member or two interested, but the closest I get is my wife wanting to run the half just so she can wear a costume, yet she hasn't even even begun considering an actual training plan so I know that she's not serious.

Amy - Hey there :goodvibes I have a running buddy who coaches the Galloway method and he (Jeff Galloway) suscribes to going way beyond the desired goal race for mental and physical preparedness (or something like that). He also has you run/walk in specific intervals and go much slower for the long runs than goal pace. I have never trained Galloway but know a ton of people who have and love his methods. Personally I am sticking to Higdon for this race since I am more comfortable with his plan.
Oh, and I am going to run NYCM in 2012 (I have done the lottery for 2 years, so after next year DH and I will be eligible for entry)!

As Beth indicated, Jeff has allways suggested running the distance or over-distance in training. His first timer plan will have runners pushing to 26 miles. If I remember correctly, his most advanced plan used to be even longer. When I was a first timer, I followed his plan and used the three weeks where the plan went to 26 for injury recovery.

Personnaly, I do not subscibe to the philosophy for every runner... I think once you have made the distance once you really never need to be in the neighborhood again, except on race day. But then I am not a world calss runner - nor do I coach them.

I agree with you there Coach Charles. I trained for a 30K race back in March where the training plan alternated between 20K and 25K distances for several weeks before tapering started for the race. I ended up spraining my ankle and had a horrible time at the race.

I recently did a 30K a couple of weekends ago and followed the same training plan but ended up cutting out the 25K distances (because of the hot weather) and did much better this race. No injuries either! :thumbsup2

I think it's much better to go into something undertrained than it is to be overtrained with too many miles but that's just me.

Glad I could add to your happiness! LOL We actually stayed off property and I couldn't figure out how to meet my dh. So, a wonderful CM in the merchandise tent showed me where the busses were and I caught a bus to AK and dh picked me up there. That bus was SOOOOOO warm!!!

2011 is my first full ever too! It really needs to be warmer. I'm putting in my order for weather right now - 55 degrees. Please??!!

Hate to spoil a good thing but the W-Z tent is never full. And no, no one ever really checks if you are in the correct line/tent.

I WILL remember that for next year! Thank you!

LOL Which race are you running? I feel SO blessed this year to have this many runners in my family. I can't believe my dh is actually going to run the half! He just started his training last week - so there's still time!!!!

Well, yeah, but doesn't it depend on how the miles are spaced out? Say that optimal performance for a marathon has you peaking at 65 mpw (which is more than many, but less than Pfitz 18/70). That's not overtraining in the same way that being on your feet running for 29 miles in one go might be, right?

Hello to everyone! Worked wk 18/d1 today. It went well. I'm a slow one and do Bingham so cannot speak for Galloway or Higdon other than I think that doing that plan would kill me. However, I did hear Galloway offer someone a suggestion at an event to R1/W1 as a way of enjoying the event a bit more. It did indeed work for me, It even went better than expected. I had a great time. For me, that's what the event is about. I work hard during my training and use the event to enjoy since I'm not going to win any of the events in which I participate.

I'm going for Goofy; it will be my second half (my first is at the end of the month) and first full! Alas, my wife does not have the fever like I do. I really enjoy running - the physical, mental and emotional challenge of it all; the few times she's done some distance just around the neighborhood she hated it. I feel there is no turning her to the dark side... ;)

Alright, I'm not officially signed up yet, but assuming the Half doesn't fill by the 15th, I'm doing the Half this year!

I just did my first 5K yesterday and was in the 13-minute mile range, so with extra training to build stamina and distance I feel confident!! I'm going to be using the run-walk training plan in Marathoning for Mortals. :)

I shall keep you guys posted as to what's going on! :)

(Some of my twitter exercise buddies talked me into this craziness - and continuing it next fall with the Disneyland Half for the Coast to Coast medal. Yes...we're nuts!)

I don't mind, at all! They're "Superfeet." Hope you find something that helps!

Another happy Superfeet user. I use them to have a little added arch support. I don't use inserts in my normal shoes but found using them in my running shoes has kept away some of the foot arch pain I had in my early long runs.

New airfare sale this morning, if you are flying out of ATL. As low as $138 round trip. That means I have now officially registered for the marathon. Once I paid for the airfare, I figured I might as well register for the race. Started training yesterday, and have a long way to go, but I will be there!

Time to book hotel now...

I'm going to jump into this as well. I'm Paige and January will be my first marathon. I've done several half marathons before and will run one in November. I'm super nervous about a full though! My dh is also going to run, but we don't run together, since he is a lot faster than I am. My 8 year old is going to run the 5k.
I'm hoping to learn a lot from this thread about running, the actual race and how to manage the rest of the family (my mom is coming to stay with the kids while we run).
