OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

For anyone who is interested, Run Disney just announced that there are 27,000 people entered in the half next weekend.

Unfortunately, we will never know how many start next weekend... Only finish. I am guessing that we will only see 22000 ish in the results. Makes it look bad when start shrinkage (DNS) are added to the DNF.

I suppose some enterprising person with too much time on their hands could sign up for a text alert for every one of the 27,000 bib numbers, compile the tracking results, and figure out how many made it across each of the timing mats. ;)

Feel better, Rubato!

I think the nerves are really starting to set in. I dreamed last night - twice - that we had overslept the race!! EEK!

This is my first half marathon. Am I going to be totally screwed if my longest run is only 11? I was following Higdon's plan, but did start a week early to add an extra long run at 11, but now I am getting nervous that I won't have done enough. I am generally right around a 9 min. pace.
I did the Hal Higdon for my 1st 1/2 and the longest I ran prior to race day was 10 miles. Due to when I signed for the race, I had to condense the 12 week training program into 8 weeks. I was gladly surprised with my 2:10 finish. You'll do great if you are at a 9 min mile pace.

A friend of mine that's doing the marathon on Sunday found out that you could email the rundisney people ahead of time to find out your corral and wave. He sent an email to them in mid December and we just found out earlier this week.
What is your bib number or bib number range? My wife is around 41,000. I'm trying to plan as well as I can with a 3 and 5 year old to watch her during the half.

I would guess around corral 6 or 7....

You'll find out for sure at the expo and get a better estimate. I would plan on traffic delays anyway so getting out 30 minutes too early is 100% better than 5 minutes late.

I have a question about timing for spectating for the full. My family is staying at CBR and I run around a 9 min mile (but may be much slower after the half, this is my first Goofy!). Anyway, I was thinking that I would be at TTC around 7:00 (I think I will be in the second corral). I am telling my family to leave CBR at 6:00 to drive to TTC to catch me, does this sound reasonable? I am then having them walk over to Poly to catch me again at 12.5 and then drive to either AK parking lot or Epcot for mile 25, whichever they feel like and seems reasonable with the traffic. Is AK a long shot or doable in a car? Is is possible to do AK parking lot AND MM25? Just trying to get a grip on the itinerary for the weekend and have too much non-running time on my hands:lmao:.
TIA!

Your timing is reasonable early, but there is a potential bug. Not insurmountable but something that will slow the departure from Poly. Your family will actually be parking in the MK parking lot and walking to the TTC. The rub is getting out of the MK parking lot. There is an alternate exit open from the lot, but traffic leaving the lot can be a nightmare since we, the runners, will be using the real exit from the lot. I have heard stories about folks getting stuck in the lot for 30 to 45 minutes while traffic is metered out and combined with all the other backups in the Monorail loop resorts. Even with no slowdown, they will only have 40-45 minutes to get to the AK parking and out and up to the park entrance area to see you.

If one of your crew is sharp they can figure your pace from TTC through Poly and decide on the fly. I made a spread sheet for my wife that did something similar to that for her. It's not a tough calculation... Four miles from TTC through to Poly. Assuming constant pace, you will be exiting the AK gate in about the same interval. We use that to allow for ease in the field judgement. If they noted the time you pass Poly then they know what it looks like for AK and can make a field decision after getting free of the MK parking lot.

While the AK parking lot is also encumbered on race day, getting into the lot is not slowed. Getting out can be a bear. The path out is limited to one lane on Osceola through to Buena Vista Dr then forced to exit there. I see traffic really backed up due to traffic control on the surface street in front of the mcD. I wonder if taking Sherberth from Osceola down to 192 then over to Epcot Dr and back up to the parking lot would be quicker.... Guessing that may be an option out.

Anyway, if your crew knows where you will be and when they can adjust on race day and see you as many places as they can. mary has made it from the Poly to AK to Mile 25 once in all these years. Recently, we have just decided it was a little bit of a longshot so she no longer attempts.

Thanks Coach, I was thinking that it might be a long shot but wasn't sure of the specifics. I will give them these directions and have them make a "game day" decision, DH is an engineer and loves making calculations like this:laughing:. I figure if they get out of MK parking lot in a reasonable amount of time, they go for it. If not, they just leisurely head on over to Epcot and enjoy the park from 9 until I get there a little while later.

I guess the other option would be for them to skip Poly after TTC and head straight to AK, but then they are still dealing with yucky traffic out of that parking lot. :headache: I think I will let them know the deal and let them decide as a group (it will be DH, Mom and SDad along with 2 kids so not the most mobile group in the world:lmao:).

Is that higher than normal? I wonder how many corrals that means and how many runners in each. If we go by Coach's guess, 3000 per corral would evenly divide to 9, so that's probably about right.

As if I haven't had enough to deal with, my son and I are now sick. 102 fever, achy, sore throat. Just great! I guess the good news is that it should be out of the way by the time the half starts in exactly one week, but I was hoping to get a few runs in to catch up from the tendonitis.

Rubato, I'm so sorry you are sick! I am sick as well, I've been in bed for the past two days. Feeling better now, hope you are too!

I walked for 30 minutes a few days back to see about the knee, and of course, it hurt after. Even put on the knee strap. I'm thinking all that's going to get me through the 1/2 is biofreeze and some Aleve...:sad1:

Just popping in today before everyone heads down to WDW to wish everyone a great race. I will be cheering from afar this year, but will also be remembering my first Disney half in 2009 and full in 2010.

For all the first timers.....please take a moment to think about how far you have come from the very scary day when you forked over all that dough to run at Disney. You have come far, and sometimes it is easy to forget how much you have already accomplished.

For all the veterans....hope you find new ways to enjoy the races, and get to meet new WISH'ers.

Good luck everyone! Have great races. Hope to see you in 2012 (I'm thinking Goofy.....)

Maura

FFi - where did you see that there were 27k people registered? I didn't see anything on their site.

It was sent it out in their Twitter feed yesterday

Thanks John. Guess I'll have lots of company. I know they have only8 waves published on their site so that would be an average of 3,300 per wave. Looking forward to it.

FINISHED LAST TRAINING RUN!

"....Tennesotans, you just completed your first marathon training plan... What are you going to do next?...."

**I'm going to DISNEY WORLD!**

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

(Many days I do act my age... not today)

Love it!!!! I don't really act my age either, most of the time. :thumbsup2

Even though I'm a little sick still, I just ran the farthest I have run since my injury, 6 whole miles!!!!!
No pain at all. I only have one more run scheduled before we leave Wednesday morning. I think I'm just going to do a little 4 miler on Tuesday and call it good. The even better news is that I'm running at faster than race pace. Of course, it's only for 6 miles, but I'll take it.

It's DisneySports

Thanks!! :)

Gah, you don't know how hard I was trying to figure out how I could possibly get a doctor's note for missing school Monday through Thursday so I could have just stayed down in Orlando!! But then again, my bird does ok for about a week...possibly more, so my extra 4 days caused by snow put me right at that edge.

Still, VERY excited to go BACK down to Orlando Thursday night!! WOOT!!!

Or you could be in my shoes and be there for the marathon, then head home Tuesday only to return for a meeting on Thursday pm

I was going to chime in on the avoiding Disney for a year post but I will here. I am in town on average once every 4-6 weeks. Much of the charm of the "world" is gone. Now it does not mean that I will not be running in 2012... in fact I will probably be an early entrant for 2012 just to keep the streak of soon to be 6 and then 7 going.

I am in the camp of seeking personal answers to why I continue to pay a premium for an event that about every third or fourth year is a sub-par event. In no way am I slamming the RD or Disney, but the law of statistics will dictate that every so often something will just go wrong. I am interested to see how elastic Disney believes the cost of entry is for the marathon. Last year they bumped pricing hard and i think the lack of sell out is a result. (yes, I honestly think that they just pushed the number up so that the % full equals 100).

If I were a gambling man, i would guess that the 2012 events will both cost $5 more if you wait past say April. I am relieved to see an escalating price increase structure being implemented at other mouse races.... For sure if that is the case I will have a receipt in hand BEFORE leaving MCO.
