OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

I'd emailed it to them (this was in the beginning of October) with a link to the serachable results. I got an email back stating that they had received it and updated my registration information.

I see. I submitted mine with the original registration. I'll assume that they accepted it. At the end of the day, I'm not going for a PB - if I start in a slower corral, I'll live.

I'm confused about the 2:45 corral though. I thought you only needed proof of time if you would be fast than 2:30?

Yeah...I didn't have a 10K at the time to use. So I found one and ran it in sufficient time. :)

Regarding the 2:45, this is what's on the rundisney site:

"If you believe you will finish the Half Marathon in less than 2:45 hours or the Marathon in less than 5:00 hours, proof of time is required for start corral placement."

Okey Dokey. For some reason I remembered it as 2:30, rather than 2:45

Sorry to hear about the injuries Fellowhip9798 and Tandy. I hope they get cleared up before race weekend. Usually I'd say rest but that is hard when you are a month out from a race.

Tandy, for your Achilles I'd see a doctor, especially if you hear any clicking when you walk. You do not want to rupture that tendon, I've had friends who have and it is a rough recovery.

Here's one idea that will give you another good long run and then a nice taper over the following three weeks before the race.
12/12 - your short run
12/19 - 12 or 13 miles
12/26 - 6 miles
1/2 - 4 miles

Thanks for the suggestion!! Do you think it's a bad idea to do less than the 12 or 13 on the 19th?
For the week of the half, do I continue doing the regular weekday 30 minute runs?

Thanks again for the suggestions!

I'm in the 2:45 corral. (Or I should say my 10K time was accepted for an estimated 2:45 finish.) My 10K times seem to point to something in that neighborhood. I'll be using a 4:1 as opposed to a 3:1 or 3:2 run:walk ratio though, so we'll see what that does. I used it in a 5M race here and it improved my pace by almost a minute a mile.

How about you?

I should be in the same corral :)

Still not sure what run/walk ratio I'll be using...I've tried the 4:1 and 3:30/1:30 so far. Might try the 3:2 today and see how that works!

I think in your fist post you had a 10 miler in mind.... That would be more than fine.. As long as you get a nice, confidence building run in that weekend in the 8-13 range you will be OK.

I differ a little from most folks on tapering for a half. I am not a fan of a two weekend taper unless you are needing a little time to heal on injury. Saying that, there is absolutely nothing 'wrong' with a two weekend taper, either.

Remember that a taper is a reduction in time/miles not a reduction in effort. So I would continue with the midweek schedule up to the last week. The last week I would pull back your effort just a bit. I generally do not run in the early part of race week but will run a light and free run on Thursday or Friday once I get into the WDW area.

The 4:1 worked well for me in my 5M Turkey Trot. It didn't work as well Sunday in my 10K - but there were a lot of weird factors that went into that race... 1st race in REALLY cold weather; had to rush getting from baggage to the start (stupid MTA issues! - I wasn't the only one with this issue); there was an emergency with a spectator or volunteer at the beginning that resulted them calling for EMTs with a defibrillator before the back section of the crowd had even started moving; and I'd been fighting a cold. I'm going to try 4:1 in the Jingle Jog on Saturday and see how that works. My training plan calls for 3:2 the day of my first 15K, and I definitely think I'll be sticking with that. I'm tempted to try the 3:30-1:30 combo sometime too. Maybe my 4M midnight run.

I used the 4:1 and didn't feel like the 1 was quite enough recovery time (for me anyway). The 3:30/1:30 felt like just enough recovery time. I'm afraid the 3/2 might be too much walking...but since I'm short of training for this race, for the distance, I might need that 2 mins of walking later in the race. I've calculated my pace for walking and running and should beat my last half time by at least a minute per mile as long as all goes as planned!

Is doing a 6 mile and then a 4 mile run for the weekend runs considered a two week taper (since the 6 would be on the scheduled short "long run" week, and then the 4 would be a taper), or were you saying that in regards to my question about the 30 minute weekday runs? I hope you know what I'm saying. LOL I can explain what I'm trying to ask much easier than writing it.

If that is considered a two week taper, what is your recommendation for those two weeks? I appreciate all input - as I'm totally new to this! :confused3

So i'll plan to do the 30 minute weekday runs up until the week of the race, where then I won't run until the 5K. Does that sound like a correct strategy?

Thanks again to both of you for your suggestions!!

I think you are asking if a Christmas weekend run of 6 and a New Year's Weekend of 4 would serve as long runs? Yes. I would try to get a longer run in this weekend, if possible.

So 10, 6, 4 would be considered an appropriate tapering plan.

With regard to the week-of-the-race midweek stuff, I find that a travelling race takes me out of my routine. I would not fret if I missed a midweek run early in the week but would really focus on a late week, once I am in WDW, run to shake out the legs.

I will have an impromptu 5k along the pathways of Crescent Lake on Friday AM.

Thanks for taking the time to make sense of my rambling :lmao:(and, as always, for the advice, as well)!!

Which do you think would be the best resort for the race weekend...

YC
GF
WL

All of these are options, just don't know which would be best.

Thanks!

Personally, I would think YC since it's an Epcot resort. You'd be a lot closer. But, I guess it depends on what you want to do with the rest of your time. :)

GF has the benefit of being on the monorail. From everything I've read, the monorail is more convenient/comfortable/faster than the buses to get to and from the race. You will not be able to walk from YC to the start of the race and can only walk through EPCOT to get back at the end of the race if you have a park ticket that you want to use at EPCOT that day (i.e. a park hopper or are planning an EPCOT day) and, if you do the half, you'd have to wait until the park opens at 9am.

On the other hand, I love the EPCOT area and it would be first choice in general (and would be good for cheering for the full).

Has anyone ever registered past the deadline for the bibs being printed with your names at Disney and still had your name on the bib? I haven't yet. But, it makes me wonder since it was brought up on the Princess thread. They really would print their final bibs nearly two months before the race?

You do have YC listed first;).....All I can say is that I stayed here for the W & D Half in Oct...it was so nice walking back to the resort after the race!!! No buses to deal with!
However, for this Half, I am at POR....I will miss that walk! But have more $$$ to spend! LOL

Either of the first two.

YC - you still bus to the start but can walk home from the finish (wiith the use of a park pass). The BW area is one of my favorites
GF - Monorail, monorail, monorail..... Don't even think of leaving the resort before 4

I hae not personally done it but I would assume that they arrainge the race during some of the time between name cut off and race day. I would assume that a lot of that time would be devoted to confirming race proofs and such. It would be safe to assume the bib order would be placed 6 weeks or so pre-race.

Really? I'm at the CR. I thought the monorail stopped running at 4am?
