Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

Who is planning to do both 5k and 10 miler? Am I crazy to think about it? I'll be training for the Jan full but I also have a local half the weekend after ToT.

Amanda

Have fun!

I learned last year at W&D that doing a 5K in the morning and a longer race that night doesn't work for me. But that doesn't mean it won't work for you. (There were other factors going on, but I know that doing the 5K didn't help me any.)

My best recommendation would be to stay off your feet absolutely as much as possible between the 5K and ToT.

Who are the first time runners signed up for this race? It will be my first race over 5K (I will probably do at least 1 10k before then).
It'll be my first race over a 5K, unless a local 10K magically appears before then (nothing on the calendar as of now). I've done sprint intervals with my walking for years, but only started distance training 8 weeks ago - followed Galloway's 5K program and I'm doing the 10K program now. After that I'll switch to the 10-mile program. So far, 5 miles has been my longest long run and I'm doing :30/1:00/:30/:30 walk/run/walk/run intervals, averaging around a 12:30 mile pace. The hardest part for me is battling exercise-induced asthma; even with an inhaler, my lungs can't go as hard or as long as the rest of me. But it's progressing, so I'm hopeful that a sub-10:00 mile will be possible someday!

It'll be my second run disney event (first was the Royal Family 5K) and first at this distance. I also plan to do a couple of 5K thru out the year and I'm following Jeff Galloway's training program that starts May 29th for this particular race.
Hee hee, ditto all of that! :thumbsup2 I've got a local 5K next week, another in April, and the Everest Challenge in May.

He has played soccer all his life and went on a "training" run this past Monday to see where his pace was. He finished the 10 miles in 1:55min...I don't think he needs that much training ;)
Oh yeah - I played soccer in high school and that's some serious running!

I really excited to see what the medal looks like. I hope it's more interesting than the Princess medal ;) I LOVED the WDW relay medal and the Wine and Dine 1/2 medal - but felt the Princess one was very lacking.

I, too, am uber eager to see the medal. I did notice on the training plan for this race, Stitch is featured in the artwork. I think Stitch would be cute on the 5k medallion, but I'd really rather not have him on the medal. I don't know if the artwork is an "official logo" of this race or if it's just art, but it looks kinda cheesy to me. Regardless, as long as I finish, I will proudly sport that medal no matter what it is.

I still haven't committed to the 5k. I'm signed up to do the Westchester Medical Center 1/2 Marathon on October 7th (on the Bronx River Parkway). It sounds like the 5k is more fun than anything which is why I'm considering it...

I want to sign up for the race SO bad..but I have to wait until my work schedule comes out in April to see if I have an event to work that weekend...crossing my fingers that it doesn't sell out before then!

I've been reading this thread -- lurking but not writing -- since day one. So excited about this race! I ran the Princess last year with two friends but this time it's a family trip so my husband is running with me.
I have a question -- Free Dining was announced on 3/1 and I added that to my package -- does anyone know if I can get the RunDisney discounts in addition to that? I know you can't combine two offers normally but wonder if it's different with the RunDisney packages.

i am excited to be doing another disney run. I think they are awesome.

A question though I have had since I herd about the ToT run and the bash afterwards. What do you do with sweaty running clothes for the party? I have not done a run with a party afterwards.

Do you pack a change of clothes and change between the race and bash?

What are others doing?

Bryan

Bryan - if you do pack a change of clothes it's a smart idea to include some baby wipes or body wipes and take what I've heard other runners call a 'chemical shower'. It doesn't get you squeaky lean but it does make you more comfortable.

I usually keep a couple of Oil of Olay (or similar) cloths torn in half and stashed in a mini-ziploc in my belt: duck in to a washroom after, wet them in the sink, one for all the salt on my face and arms, and the other(s) for ... you know where! :rolleyes1

I've got Free Dining at Pop for the week before the Run (I'm at BWV that week), and that means I have to buy Park Tickets too, but the TOT MYW tkt discount is WAAAYYY better than free Quick Service Dining, so I'm hoping for a room discount code for that week so I can give up Free Dining & take advantage of TOT MYW tkt discount.

I'm wondering who's dressing up in costume for the run?
It's early, I know, but I figure I'll start thinking now!

I likely will be doing MNSSHP during my trip, and I have a half Marathon in Toronto a couple weeks later, and just might - might - wear the costume again for one or both of those..... although I'd like to come up with a costume that somehow glows in the dark for the night run

Ok -- I'm staying at New Orleans FQ so I'm getting the reg. Dining Plan. Is is still a better deal to buy TOT tickets? or can I change my package to 2 days of tickets (minimum to get free dining) and then buy the TOT tickets for the rest of the days. How much are the TOT tickets? I haven't registered for the race yet so can't see the cost. Thanks for the info!

This morning I did a 5.52 mile run/walk, my longest distance to date. And my pace was under 16 minutes all throughout. That's the first "long run" I've done at under 16 minutes per mile, except for a 5k last weekend, which was under 15 minutes per mile. I'm excited that I'm starting to see real progress. Just thought I'd share.

Good for you! Congrats on the progress. :goodvibes

:cheer2: Those milestones feel good, don't they?!

Did an 11 mile run yesterday in 1:42, can't wait to see what I can do by the time the race arrives!! :woohoo:

Nice!

So jealous of all you getting to train! Our weather has been craptastic and not conducive to running. I'll run in wind, I'll run in drizzle, but not the two together. Sigh...

I'm thinking of signing up for this race since I'll be there that weekend for free dining. Would definitely dress up as well. I would love a glow in the dark costume. Was thinking of purple/black or orange/black color combos sine I'll likely wear the same costume to MNSSHP. Are people planningon dressing up for this event?

I was without internet for a few weeks and as soon as I had it, I signed up for TOT. Seriously, it was really one of the first things I did... This race looks really exciting and fun so I'm excited to see just what runDisney has in store for us.

I just ran Princess like a week and a half ago and today was my first longish run since. I got a nice 5 mile run in this morning with a 10 min pace.

Ok -- I just answered my own question. I just called the IRun number and asked about ticket prices. The savings for a 7 day base ticket is only $20.98. I was told that I could do free dining on my regular package with 2 days of tickets then buy the TOT discounted tickets separately. It's cheaper to just buy tickets with my regular package.
Thought I'd post the info in case anyone else is looking for the best deal.
