Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

Another FL girl here:wave2: I second what everyone else has said about training in the south. I try to go as early as possible, but I'm still drenched by the time I'm done. Before this race was announced I didn't plan to do a race in the fall so I could skip the summer run, but here I am again;)

:rotfl2: hahaha, me too! After training for DL last summer I said Never again...it was just sooooo miserable....I'm not sure what made me think a race only a few weeks later and a few miles shorter would be that different???? Oh well, I think I'm going to take it easy for ToT and run for fun and pics rather than a good finish time anyway.

It's a special kind of gross when you're out running in the heat and humidity and you get "splashed" by someone who's DRENCHED and passing you.
Ewwwwwwww! :rotfl2: So true, though!

I was not thinking properly at all when I decided the TOT would be a great way to pre-train for the Princess and get a decent time filed for Princess corrals. I'm hoping a local 10K shows up between the TOT and Princess so I can use that instead - I'm with you, Cripey, on wanting to enjoy the TOT!

Ahh, I've had so little time to run lately it's been driving me nuts! However, I should FINALLY have time to get in a shorter run (3-4 miles) tonight and hopefully a longer run tomorrow, although unfortunately I can't go nuts because I have to somewhat save my legs for dance competition on Sunday, lol.

Anyway, I'm working on acclimating to warm/hot weather running since I only started running last fall and haven't really had experience with it. Figured I'd share this posting with hot weather running tips from a fitness site I'm a member of, for those that are interested in adapting to hot weather running. Seems to have some good tips, although since this run is at night it shouldn't be too terrible (I hope, lol):

Going on a 7.5 mile run in the morning. I'm quite nervous about it since its the first time for me at that distance. Knowing that the 6.3 I did 2 weeks ago about did me in doesn't ease my nerves a bit either. I think the monotony of it is what I dread more than anything. Just thought I'd share.

Good luck to you!!!!!!:cheer2::cheer2:

I'm sure you'll be fine! Remember, it's mind over matter!

Well I ran an 8k Saturday. It was the longest race I've ran to date. My official time was a bit slower than I hoped for 1 hour 1 min and 27 sec with a pace of 12:22. I really wanted to finish in under an hour but I'll take it. Now I just have to find a 10k so I can get a time for corral placement.

Just thought I'd check in to say 7.65 complete!

WOOO - HOOOO!!! Congrats to you both! :cool1:

Anybody ever run on the beach before? Will it ruin my running shoes if I do it? Any tips?

When I lived in California, I would run on the beach at least a handful of times each year. Whether or not it's going to ruin your shoes... well you're going to get sand in them one way or another. My advice would be to either get straight to the hard sand if that's where you're planning to run. If it's the soft sand you want to run through, personally I would take the shoes off. Soft sand is hard enough to run through you don't need the addition weight of shoes and whatever sand is getting into your shoes.

I used to live on the beach here in FL and walked/ran in teh sand almost daily - ITA with slp's advice above. :thumbsup2 In my experience, the sand didn't ruin my shoes at all, but they did get a little stinky from beach funk. Definitely easier to be barefoot in soft sand, but be careful: VERY easy to twist an ankle/pull foot muscles/etc. running in soft sand.

Thanks for the tips! I'm planning to run on the hard, wet sand. Of course I have to go through the soft sand to get to it. I thought about waiting til I get to the hard sand to put my shoes on but then again my feet will be covered in sand at that point. I can't imagine that would be a good thing with the friction the sand would cause and all. I guess I'll just walk as quickly as possible and deal with the loose sand in my shoes later. Lol

I did run through the soft sand to get to the hard sand, it's usually not too far (but sometimes is super far, or at least feels like it). Just one piece of advice... always watch the tides. Where I used to live, if you went on a long beach run and didn't pay attention, you could get trapped very easily (happened a few times when surfing, but it's not so bad then cause we could paddle around it).

I did a 5k on Saturday and finished in 47:08. I walked for 3:30 and ran1:30.
I ran last night and did 2:30 walking 1:30 running and finished in 28:06.
I'm trying to lose weight and build stamina at the same time.

I'm going to start the TOT training program on Monday. Do you think it would be a bad thing to do extra training?

:maleficen Got my Villians Hollywood Bash tickets today! :hmghost:
party:

Is anyone going to be at hollywood bash alone? My trip mates (parents and 3 year old son) will be long sleeping by the time I finish and am trying to figure out how late I will be staying at the bash.

I'll be there alone! Couldn't find anyone to do the race with me, and right now it looks like I'll be traveling solo.
