Official Disneyland ½ Marathon & 5k

I may have missed this somewhere in this long thread, but how hilly is the Disneyland 1/2 course? My neighborhood is hilly - I've had to modify the Galloway plan to run when I can and walk up the steeper hills. I'm truly tired of the hills and the heat.

Ran 10 last night. Feeling it this morning! Have a trip planned to Disneyworld this weekend. Hoping all the walking there will count as a workout!

I haven't ran it yet :confused3 but my friend has and she didn't say that it was hilly. I think for most part it's a pretty flat course. I know training on hills sucks (I do it all the time as well) but it pays off. If you have a race that is flat your time is going to be much better and if the course is hilly you are prepared. Remember that hill work is speed work in disguise :cool1:

Can you take pictures with them or are they on a stage to start the race?

I remember them being on the stage at the start then out on the actual course at the end near the finish. That is when you could high five them or I'm sure get a picture. I just want to cross the finish line so I pass on any photo op.

Yeah, that's what I keep telling myself. But my knees and hips aren't getting the memo. :)

I know. Make sure you shorten your stride on up and especially down hill. I have some big hills and make to be very careful going down the hill that I don't lengthen my stride.
Stretch, roller and massage by somebody who knows sports massage to get the hip flexors and the glutes worked out really well.

I wouldnt call the course hilly.

At the start, there is a dip under the Downtown Disney/Monorail track area.
About mile 4, you have a overpass over I-5 that is a decent bump in the road.

Down about mile 6, there is a little bit of rolling "hills", but nothing crazy.

At mile 8-9ish, you are on the path behind the Honda Center that has a little up and down to it.

Angels stadium has ramps into and out of it.

And that is it for any real Hills to the course. It is defnitely not what you would consider hilly, but isnt totally flat.

Hope that helps a little.

How hot does it usually get? I'll be coming from Colorado and wondering if I'll die in the heat? lol

I am coming from Colorado too! I will actually be up in Copper Mountain in a few weeks for the Warrior Dash. :yay:

The course if very flat. It has an overpass at mile 4.5 which is the biggest hill. There is an underpass around mile 7, and then after you run along the aqueduct there is a quick and short rise as you exit that isn't much fun (momentum killer). Also, in and out of the stadium there are very short hills. Overall, it is very flat. In terms of losing time, you lose more time due to the turns in the park than you do the few hills.

Temperatures start from 60-70 and end from 70-85 (85 only one really bad year). It is not a cold race at all, but a lot depends on if there is a marine layer and if it burns off or not.

Coming from Colorado the altitude should help a lot.

Omg.....that's hot! So maybe a black tank is a bad idea?!

Given that all my summer training so far has been in the 90's with a whole lot of stinkin' humidity, these temperatures sound heavenly.

I hear ya. I've gone out a few times at 6:45 am where it's already 80ish out with dew points in the 70's = not much fun.

I am doing a black tank. :) I am excited for a flatter course. You don't find a lot of flat courses here!!!

So...what fun outfits is everyone planning? :)
I'm a little sad it's closed when I'm there but I opted for the ballerina from the HM stretching room.

I have a question... This is my first time in Disneyland (southern California for that matter) and probably last for a long time. Does anyone have suggestions for easily accessible, non-Disney restaurants or activities? I love my mom, but she's coming for some reason and hates Disney. She said, "Wait, I thought you were going to run through the parks and pass everything, isn't that enough? Why do you have to go ride on it?!"

Your costume sounds awesome! :thumbsup2

This is how I would look if my mom said that to me: :crazy2: I love Disneyland!

Garden Walk is close enough and they have all kinds of restaurants that are "non Disney". Sometimes we go over there when we are wanting a break from the crowds!

That costume does sound cool! Not sure what to do about your Mom...I don't know DL as well as I know WDW.

Black tanks aren't so bad. Remember the first few miles are in the dark. The sun usually rises around the 4-mile mark or so, but then it is low (if there is no marine layer blocking it. For miles 9-13.1 it is really at your back, and only one year it was hot. It depends on how long you are out there for. I might wear a black tank, but it is one that breathes well and I'm not worried about it absorbing too much heat.

OTOH, I might decide at the last minute to wear my green Peter Pan out fit. I made if from synthetic fabric so it really isn't too bad to run in. I'm planning on bringing it, but probably a low likelihood I will wear it at this race. It is definitely making it for the second half of the 2013 Goofy Challenge though.

Sorry if this was posted, I saw a few asking and I printed this one out and posted it in my work cubicle for motivation :)

Look forward to meeting some or all of you!

I love that idea!! It's so original, but disney at the same time.

I'm doing Cinderella themed. I'm working on my shirt tonight, I'll post a pic when it's done. I also have the Cinderella Mickey ears that I'm pinning on my running hat.
