OFFICIAL Disney Cake Chatter Thread - Part III

Can the mini two-tiered cakes be made with fondant?? I thought the pix I've seen showed them with fondant. But Pat just told me no (finally spoke with her after a week of phone tag!!). Anyone ever get one with fondant??

I got a mini 2-tier cake at the Grand Floridian last year that was covered in fondant. I don't think Pat even knew it was covered in fondant, but because it's an established style of cake that the Grand Floridian Bakery makes for weddings ("Coral & Shells"), it just came that way.

So let me understand this correctly. The resorts that have bakeries are: Grand Floridian, The Contemporary, BoardWalk Inn, Animal Kingdom Lodge or Yacht and Beach Club.

Yes, but those aren't the only resorts that those bakeries serve, so while that is a list of the resorts that have bakeries, it is not a list of the only places you can get a fancy cake. That list is in Post #1 of this thread.

So thought we're hearing a lot about Pat and Brian, there are point people at each of these bakeries as well we can/will talk to?

Right. At some resorts you can deal directly with the pastry chef (like Chef Brian) but other resorts make you go through a point-person in Private Dining (like Pat).

Yep. Got that. :thumbsup2

That's why I was trying to figure out where the bakeries were so I could figure out my plan of attack. We'll be staying at 3 differnt resorts coming up and 2 of them have bakeries. So I was trying to plan for one of them we were planning on having a meal at that would be the best choice to have it delivered to. ;) Knowing how FULL we get at Cape May, I'm going with the Boma meal since I'm never full at that one. Everyone else is, just not me. ;) I wantz to eatz me cakey! That, and we'll be CL at AKV so I'll let the intinerary planners help me. :thumbsup2;):goodvibes

I drew up a new sketch/idea last night so I'll post how it goes when we get back!

Thanks! How much was the Coral & Shells cake?

The Disney Parks Blog has a retrospective of Disney's Fairy Tale Wedding cakes today—including that Coral & Shells cake I mentioned at the top of this page, so I thought I'd post some of them here as inspiration... and proof that the Grand Floridian Bakery does do shaped cakes. :thumbsup2

Hi lurkyloo, you posted a really cute cake a while back that was bright pink with some ribbon detail and light green flowers. In your opinion do think that the Boardwalk bakery could do something similiar to this with different colors and roses. It's for my DD's 22nd...Last year I ordered from GF and after a lenghtly conversation it never showed. Oh well. TIA.:goodvibes

Wow! thanks for posting those pix - great inspiration indeed!!

I finally spoke w/ Pat today. There were some details that she had mixed up and I could see that if you are dealing with lots and lots of cakes, it would be easy to do. Of course, to me, they are HUGE details and how could she possibly get it wrong when it is so perfectly clear in my email!? But... she was very friendly and nice and I thought - yeah, I could see that it would be easy to do.

Anyway, I finally decided to go with:
Vanilla Cake, Choc Buttercream
Filling 1 is Bavarian Cream w/ Strawberries
Filling 2 is Dark Choc Mousee w/ Strawberries
*Pat hilited that I could do two different fillings as there are 3 layers.

I long considered the orange or lemon cake suggestion but I do'nt like thse flavors w/ chocolate buttercream. If she had said no choc buttercream (b/c of the fondant), then I would have gone light and citrus-y and maybe tried that amaretto crunch! but...will ahve to wait for another opp to order an awesome cake for that! :) I can see that this could be a new "tradition" - let's find a reason to order a rockin' cake every trip!!

SERIOUSLY?? Were you able to figure out what happened? how Awful!
I kind of vented on the last cake thread but I'm over it now.:lmao:I ordered a cake for my DD's birthday for our GF Tea and spoke to Pat. She was very interested in my situation because I told her the year before that the cake I ordered for DH's birthday never arrived. She said she would take care of it personally. Oh well. Funny thing is two years prior to that we recieved one castle cake not the two I had ordered. I think the GF bakery has something against me.:rotfl2:I don't know what happend to the first or second but the last was just no where to be found. I ordered a week out.:goodvibes

I do! BoardWalk Bakery did a great job on an all-buttercream minicake version of my fondant wedding cake that had wonderful detailing. Just get the pastry chef's email and send her photos of my cake and maybe something that shows the colors and/or roses you want. :thumbsup2

I'm sure it will be DELICIOUS. Let me know how the Bavarian cream with strawberries is! And in the future, definitely try that orange cake with the amaretto crunch! (But for the record, chocolate and orange are a winning combo! Think that chocolate orange you smash at Christmas!)

I had ordered a mini cake for DH about 2 weeks ago for this coming Friday night..do I need to call and reconfirm? I think im just a little nervous since I dont have any confirmation or anything - what do I do if it doesnt show up? :confused3

I would definitely call and confirm a few days before—I always do! :thumbsup2

Same thing happened to me with Pat...this would make me extremely leery to order another cake from her. Hopefully they will change their procedures of how they book cakes so that this doesn't happen to others. This year I went with Chef Brian and cannot wait to see our spooktacular haunted mansion cake that we'll be getting next month! Well, as long as we get it that is :rotfl2:

Ok, I'm starting to get a little nervous. I did speak with Pat- once. That was when she said they don't do fondant on the mini cakes. I really want to get this ordered. We leave in 9 days!!!
Is working with Pat not the best choice? After seeing some comments here about cakes not showing, and how hard it is to talk with her...am I better off getting the cake somewhere else?? We're also dining at Portobello and Cape May Cafe- should I get a cake for one of those meals instead?

Quick question to all of those that have ordered cakes. I'm torn between getting an almond cake with bavarian and fresh strawberry filling or an orange cake with tropical mousse filling. Any feedback on these flavors?

Brian made our Haunted Mansion cake back in May '10 it was an AWESOME cake. Don't forget to take a picture!

We are staying at POR and want to get a mini cake for my parents anniversary. Is the Anniversary Mickey and Minnie white chocolate characters available at the Boardwalk?

I started a thread about the orange cake on the wedding boards to find out the answer to this question! If you do a search for orange cake, it comes up! The brides are tasting all the time, so they're the ones I wanted to ask.

The consensus was that both the orange and almond cakes were delicious (some brides recommended the almond cake with specific fillings but I don't remember which ones), but that the Bavarian cream didn't have as much flavor as they wanted. Almost all the ones that posted there really liked the tropical mousse filling (it sounded too strange for my family when I ordered the cake!)

I personally went for the orange cake with an amaretto crunch filling and it was absolutely outstanding. Totally delicious. The web address for that thread is here: http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2978139

Ok, I am working way backward on this, but this is how the Disney addict mind thinks!

My son will be turning 7 while we are at Disney next spring. I want to do some sort of special cake for him as this is a surprise and thus we won't be able to celebrate before he goes. Since my 180 days are approaching I want to book a cool restaurant to have his birthday dinner at knowing we can get a cool cake. I am thinking of something either with a Star Wars or a pirates/Captain Jack theme. Based on that, where would you make ADRs?
