Thank you to everyone who has shared ideas and photos in this thread- I drew a lot of inspiration from them!

I wanted to post pictures of the cake that Chef Brian made for my parents' anniversary. I had him create a Main Street Electrical Parade cake! The MSEP logo was done in fondant and the stand-up turtle, dragon, and train on the cake were white chocolate pieces. It was a chocolate cake with chocolate mousse inside, covered in chocolate buttercream. I had it served to our table at Chef Mickey's, as a surprise. It was very very tasty and I loved the way it turned out.

Sorry to be a Debby Downer, but I'm getting rather frustrated. I have been trying to contact a chef at AKL for about 3 weeks now, and this person just won't return my phone calls.
I spoke with someone (not a chef) about 3 or so weeks ago, and gave detailed ideas for the cake I want for our dinner at Sanaa (I have since changed my mind on everything... lol). Gave our ADR and everything. This same person called me back about 1 week later asking if the chef had called. When I told her no, the chef had not called, she almost didn't believe me! So she gives me the chefs phone number, and I have called twice now (every Monday) leaving messages with my phone number, and I have yet to recieve a phone call back.
This is the only meal that I want to do the custom cake because #1 we are paying OOP for this meal, and #2 this meal is in the beginning of our trip. We are going at the end of October.... not that its an excuse, but maybe this is why the chef hasn't bothered to return my phone call yet?
If she doesn't call me back by this coming Monday, I will leave yet another message...:sad2:

I don't want to get pushy, but does anyone have any suggestions on who else I should contact to maybe get something done here? I also contacted the yacht club about doing a custom cake for our dinner at Coral Reef. I spoke to someone who was not a chef, and he took all my information. I had one of their chefs call me back within a day or 2.... Unfortunately, we are not keeping that reservation, so I'm not doing that one. I'm getting frustrated, and worried that if this is how they work (the chef at AKL) at returning a phone call, how is my cake going to turn out?!? :guilty:

First - how far out are you from the reservation? I wouldn't call more than 3 weeks out, cuz they work on much shorter lead times and may be pushing you to the bottom of a list.

Second - when I called AKL's Private Dining, they made it sound like it would not be a big deal for them to go pick up a cake for me from the Grand Floridian Bakery. I was pretty surprised, so I confirmed it again.

Now maybe they'd be more likely to do this for someone actually staying at the resort, but you could try calling AKL Private Dining back and telling them you want to have them deliver a cake to your Sanaa meal that's being made by GF Bakery and see what they say. If they're OK with it, then call Private Dining at the GF and place your order (and explain about the pickup... which may be another Adventure in Interpersonal Communication in and of itself! :teeth:). Alternatively, you could see if AKL would pick up a cake from the Contemporary—it can be a lot easier to work with them on a custom cake than the GF. :thumbsup2

Thanks for responding! We are just about 4 months out - I know ,I know, I do things early!!!! LOL Like I said in my original post, I understand that way of thinking - "Why call her back now, we have time." but really, thats not professional. Plus when I contacted that Yhatt club, they called me back with 48 hours, knowing full well when my ADR was for (4 months out).
Having said all that, this is the 3rd week (and 3rd call) that I've gone without getting a call back from this chef. I plan going on your suggestion and calling GF Bakery and seeing what they have to say. If I tell them the trouble I've been having with AK, I hope they will help me out. Since this is a total suprise for the entire party, I'm hoping that they will be able to do the pickup, since it will look kind of strange if I dissapear right before our reservations, and reappear with a huge cake!

Thanks again!!!

ETA - I just called GF Private dining, and I told the woman what was going on... that I had been calling for 4 weeks now without a responce.... blah blah blah. She told me that they will not deliver anywhere other than within the GF. Actually, first she said that they wouldn't deliever "off property." When I told her that Sanaa is infact on property at AKL, she got a bit flustered, and put me on hold. She came back a minute later saying that she asked someone else, and said the answer was still No. Then she suggested that I call AKL Private Dining since AKL is so close to AK..... Then I explained that Sanaa is inside AKL, not in AK.... Then I repeated myself, saying that I have been doing that, but haven't gotten any calls back. Then she said with a suprised voice "Ooh, they haven't returned your calls??" I politly hung up at that point. I mean, no offence to anyone, maybe its my fault that I'm not explaining myself clearly, but it seems that I get every brain dead Disney employee in the entire company when it comes to this cake!!!!! Sorry to vent, but this is just getting really frustrating, and I'm losing a lot of confidence in Disney.

Can custom cakes be delivered at breakfast? I am thinking 1900 PF or Chef Mickeys. How early is too early for a delivery?

The saga continues......
I called AK private dining, and finally got through to someone. I explained what was going on, and they went and got the chef that I need to speak with on the phone right then and there!!! She told me that she never received any phone messages.... I don't believe her, but whatever, maybe they are just very busy.

Anyway, I told her what I wanted - 6in cake covered in red fondant, with fondant balls on the bottom, fondant Minnie Mouse siluete cutouts around the side, and silver powder Mickey Mouse siluetes around the sides as well. I also told her that I want flowers on the top of the cake.
She quoted me $102. Is this right? I took the style of the cake from someone elses on this board, and they paid only $51 (though this was from 12/09). When I explained that to her, she said that they use a universal amount, and there was nothing they could do about it..... She said that the cake was $32, the fondant was $30, and the flowers on top were $40.

I don't mind paying that amount, but I also don't want to pay a huge amount that is totally off.

Heres the link to the cake that I took my cake off except I said no bow because she said that would be yet another $40!!!

Got our cake today!
Place: Delivered to our room at Bay Lake Tower
Flavor: Chocolate with white buttercream
Price: $45

Got everything I asked for. "Happy 20th Anniversary Neil and Bonnie" in cursive, mickeys piped on in mickey colors.
It was in our room when we came back. They also provided a cake server, plates, napkins, forks, a match, and a candle.
Some of the Mickey piping had dripped a little by the time we got to the room at 1:45 (it was delivered at 12)
My parents loved it. Tastes great, very fresh. Nice treat. Will I do it again? Probably, for a special occasion like this.

Thanks Brian.

When I click on my cake in the index (listed as "Mickey Mouse Heads piped in Mickey colors onto white cake") it leads to another cake, instead of this post

I could have sworn I saw a picture of a cake with the old guys from Muppet Vision 3D. For the life of me, I can't find that photo anywhere on this thread.

Can someone help me with this?

I am planning on ordering a special cake for DD who graduated with her Ph.D. She's a neuropsychologist. Much of her work is with the elderly and or dementia patients. I thought a cake with those Muppet old guys would be cute. She just loves the elderly.

Otherwise, I could get a cake with Dory from Finding Nemo. She was the forgetful fish. :)

finally getting around to posting the cake I ordered to celebrate the friendship from some DIS friends from Brian at CR!

This thread is so helpful.. and it's so hard to not want to eat cake! :yay: I'm going to order a cake for my and dh's anniversary dinner at California Grill in December.. and I've seen SOO many beautiful cakes but none that feel like us! Both of us feel like Main Street is our favorite place to be ... but other than simply saying "Main Street," I don't have any other ideas! Any cake lovers with ideas? Or has anyone seen anything that's not posted on this thread? :)

They don't seem to have the fondant you are wanting to cover the cake, I would think that would be a big difference in price

Main Street is a great idea for a cake theme!

You could do something literal, like have them re-create the windows and exterior decor of the different stories of one of the buildings around the sides of the cake (like the building in the middle of this photo).

Or you could do something more abstract, like a Dapper Dan-inspired cake with stripes in the color of your favorite Dan and a bowtie, or maybe decorated to look like one of their hats.

Or you could just do something over-the-top Victorian, with plenty of swagging and flowers and other foofy stuff! Here are the search results for "Victorian cake" on Flickr.com: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=victorian cake

As Christine pointed out, the cake in your picture may not have been covered in fondant. It looks kinda glossy, like maybe white chocolate ganache? That would reduce the price considerably. However, if you do go with fondant, then the estimate she gave you is right on. They do have a universal pricing policy now, and Disney's been charging upwards of $100 for fondant-covered cakes in the last couple of years.

Also, if you can send the pastry chef that picture, she might be able to think of ways to create the cake less expensively—she was just going on your description over the phone. For example, you may not need to cover it in fondant to get that look, which would reduce the price.

Good luck! :thumbsup2

I am debating on getting a cake for our trip. We are staying at the BC CL and we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary and my 40th birthday while we are there. I don't know what to ask for. I know if I were to get a cake, I would get the 10 in, marble cake with fruit filling and choclolate ganache, but not sure of decorations on it. Any ideas? I have been looking at all the cakes, but nothing really sticks out, guess I just can't picture it in my head.

Christine9125 - You have to get a cake if you are celebrating those two big celebrations! I think it's tough to find a design because there are so many cool ones on this thread that it can be overwhelming. I've done a standard b-day cake that was choc. frosting with red and purple flowers, a mini-castle cake, and a mickey mouse head cake. All were for different b-days and worth the planning and money.

Do you have a fav Disney movie or one you and DH share? You could do a simple mickey and minnie cake. Or incorporate both of your fav characters? Do you have a fav attraction at WDW? You'll think of an idea when you least expect it!

We ordered a beautiful fondant, Cindy..last September. The prices are standard and yours appear to be in line.

Thank you for giving me some ideas, will have to think. I have 4 weeks until we leave so I will probably try to order it within the next week or so.

This is the cake I ordered from Brian for my nephew and his two friends that were celebrating their high school graduation. It was 8 inches, vanilla cake with white chocolate mousse filling and buttercream beneath the fondant. It was $77 and was delivered to Tony's Town Square. I peeled off the fondant, but the boys loved it. We had 7 people at dinner and only finished half the cake so I guess I could have ordered a 6 inch, but we enjoyed it just as much the next day.
