Official DISNEY Cake Chatter Thread - Part II

I just got off the phone with Pat?(I think ) from 1900 Park Fare. I ordered a cake for my daughter's 10th birthday. I was a little shocked how unhelpful she was. Well thats not entirely true. She was helpful after I told her that I had gotten cakes there before. Which was a lie but I'll explain in a minute.

2 years ago I had called chef mickeys to have a special cake made for my son, and got nowhere other then they don;t do custom cakes. I knew they did, since I have seen them on this thread, but I let it go and remained disappointed.

Fast forward to today when I called to order the cake. She was very pleasant, but only offered me a 6inch buttercream cake. I told her that I was looking for something custom, she started to tell me that for $66 she could do a buttercreme cake. So...I lied. I know not very becoming huh? I said that I had gotten some amazing cakes there before and had obviously paid quite a bit for them, but I knew the kind of work they could do. So the truth is, I've seen pictures of the cakes and the cost of them on here. she then changed her mind:wizard: and decided for $66 they could could cover it in fondant and put the design I wanted on it.

I am a little upset that I had to lie...please don't flame for that:scared:...but why did I have to?
Is this common for them to not want to accomadate?

Thank you!

I just got off the phone with Mark there. The smallest cake they would customize was a 10" cake...that's a lot of cake for 4 people! Thank goodness we'll be heading back home that day! I asked for a plain white cake with vanilla buttercream (I'm kinda picky like that!) with a Star Wars theme. I was quoted $96.57 for all of it. I asked too, for my own piece of mind, to make sure that it was NOT just an edible image and mentioned that I didn't just want a picture on a cake for that amount. I hope it's an awesome cake!! I'm trying not to have high expectations but now I'm kind of excited...

I can't wait to see pictures. I just talked with the private dining folks at Beach Club for a Star Wars cake for my son June 11th. Please post a picture of your cake when you return, I would love to see it before we leave June 4th since your son is a fellow Star Wars lover!

I got the run-around once before too. At this point, you gotta do what you gotta do. I don't see why they're discouraging guests that are practically throwing money at them!

I also don't see why at this point why they don't have a separate, central bakery that does most of their custom cakes for guests like us. And the thing is-- we're not the only message board with cake threads like this! C'mon Disney, wake up and smell the moola we're trying to throw at you!!

No flames from me,because they were obviously lying so u were calling their bluff with your own bluff thats smarts!!! I don't understand why they lie about the work they can do, I just don't get it, they get extra money out of the customer what's the problem!

Ugh, I had a very similar experience when I ordered a cake from Pat at the GF:sad2:. She was super friendly but not too helpful. I kept saying that I wanted a custom cake for my DD's b-day and she kept trying to sell me one of those 6" podium cakes. Finally I said look, I'm willing to spend $100 on this cake. Then she was like oh, well then I can do a tinker bell cake which magically costs exactly $100! Frustrating, isn't it? I felt like she was trying to keep me from actually ordering a cake at all which was weird since last year's theme was "what will you celebrate.":lmao: Good luck though, I hope your cake turns out beautifully!:goodvibes

I agree with the other folks here, Disney reallllly needs to get a centralized bakery going so that they can be consistent with both price and quality.

I am wanting to order a cake from AKL. I called the cake hotline and they told me they could either do a custom cake or a striped fondant cake. Does anyone have a picture of the striped fondant cake? I think this is the one I am going to order since its a sort of Welcome to AKL for my kids, but I would like to see a picture first just to be sure its what I want.

PHHeewww....I was a little nervous posting that I had lied, you never know what is going to set people off around here:rotfl:

She said the cake would be a 6inch(we only have 5 people) with fondant. I told her my daughter love peace signs...and really is all about peace love and Mickey mouse. She said that she would work with the decorator to something bright and along this theme. For $66.

Now that I'm off the phone I'm nervous. Looking through the cakes it seems some people have paid much more for simple cakes...and some less for extravagant cakes.
Should I be nervous? She seemed pleasant and said that she was thankful that I told her we had ordered before:rotfl2:.

I think I am going to worry about this cake my whole trip! we having it on our last night:scared:

Of course I will post pictures! He's only 5 but he and DS3 are in LOVE with Star Wars - Yode, Wuke Skywalker, Darf Vader, Darf Mall, C3PO and R2D2. :rotfl: It doesn't help that their Daddy is a Star Wars junkie so I hope this cake is good....I mentioned several times how the boys play with their "light savers" all the time and have watched the movies so I'm hoping it's really awesome for the amount of money it's costing. I'm going to call back and confirm and ask if they have any idea of what they're going to do with it or if I can have a chef's email to send some pictures (which I have yet to find). I don't mind if it's Yoda and Star Wars Mickey. I just don't want an edible image on my cake or a piece of white chocolate with a picture on it...I can get that at Publix (and I am in fact on Friday for DS5's class party!) for a lot less than Disney. I made sure to mention that we'd ordered cakes in the past and what we loved/didn't love about them and that I wanted to order again for our upcoming trip but had read that the service/taste was declining so this was a "test" cake. None of it was a lie honestly (but I would totally strech the truth if I needed to so I was able to get something I knew they offered!)...I'm glad we're going so I can "test" things out and see how they go before I order a big cake for our friends later this year. I know it's different every time but I would make specific reservations somewhere if I knew the cakes were awesome.

That was a really long winded way to say yup I'll post pictures when I get back :goodvibes

Well, now my conversation with them will start "I'd like to order another cake..." when I call them in a couple weeks for my first cake order. :lmao:

:rotfl:No kidding! That's great advice, maybe we should ask the moderator to add it to the faq at the beginning of this thread!:lmao: It could say "In order to successfully order a custom cake, lie first and say that you've already ordered one in the past."

Seriously, I don't get why it's so difficult to order a custom cake. You know Disney is probably making $ hand over fist with them considering that most tend to cost around $100. I just got a kick out of the fact that last year the theme was what will you celebrate and people tend to associate CAKE with a celebration! So let's make it more difficult to celebrate then, right?

Hey! We're back and had an awesome stay and a wonderful anniversary dinner at Citrico's! Well, after all the fiasco with Pat, we got our cake and I have to say, we were very pleased!

$66 for 6" white fondant, vanilla buttercream over lemon cake with custard filling. "Mickey delight" with silver mickeys. Peach colored flowers requested for 16th anniversary.

The cake was very moist and delicious! They boxed it up for us and we were able to place it in our fridge and enjoy it for our stay!

My only peeve is that I was told it would be a 4 layer, but, oh well. It was still a good deal for $66. :cloud9:

I asked this but never got an answer: There will only be three of us : Me and My two DS's ages 3 & 5 and we'll be on the DxDDP so I don't want too much of anything are there any mini cakes I can possibly get, I don't mind a little leftover (my inner fatty will enjoy eating it as a midnight snack :lmao:) but I don't want too much.. I see the Mini Surprise cakes but those are standard any other ideas?

Ok so we are planning on having our 5 year anniversary dinner at Narcooses on June 24th. I was going to surprise my hubby with a fancy cake and since we love Haunted Mansion (I mean we look for the ring on every trip sort of obsessive love) I was thinking that I would get HM themed cake and have "Thank you for 5 grim grinningly great years" written on it.... Can anyone give me any ideas on the cost and maybe a few pictures to reference when I call dining at the GF to order. I would really appreciate it as this is a big deal for us, 1st time we have ever gone away together alone ever without friends, family or our daughter and I really want the trip to be a special one :lovestruc

Where will you be eating? It really kind of depends by location it seems how small of a cake they'll customize.

Well you've given me hope! I am stressing out over here after talking to Pat. I too am getting a 6inch cake with fondant for $66. This cake is beautiful, and of they can give me something as beautiful as this in the parameters of what I asked for I will be very happy.
Can I ask you, how many time did you talk to her? I called yesterday and she took all the info....should I be calling to check on this or am I good? Thanks!

BTW, Pat's all excited about me ordering a cake for my mom's 65th birthday in October. You know, I think there's some reason to that rhyme, you all are talking about! :rotfl:

I can not find my pics but the cake I believe you are talking about is the zebra cake. I ordered it for DH and I for our anniversary. It was kinda cool looking. I don't think it was fondant but it was a yummy ganache. It had the amarula moose in it from the zebra domes. I will be ordering another one if we stay at AKL again in Dec.
