I've read some questions about this lately and wanted to share my experience from last night.
A few DIS-ers and my family were taking an Illuminations cruise. Because we arrived 2 weeks earlier, I offered to take care of the cake. Then I totally forgot to call & order it until Weds (right at the 48 hr window).
I called Y&B private dining, told them I wanted an 8" inch cake. Options - as you know- were chocolate cake, mouse filling and choc icing or white cake, white chocolate filling and buttercream icing. I chose chocolate.
Because there were 3 people celebrating events, I asked if they could write Congratulations to one and Happy Anniversary to the others. That's all I asked for. Nothing else. They quoted $43 (which included $32 for the cake plus gratuity, delivery & tax). The cake was on the decorated boat when we arrived last night. I didn't even take a look at it - was just happy it had been delivered.
Later before the fireworks when we were tied up under the bridge, I opened the cake box and was surprised and really delighted - it was so much nicer than I'd ever expected. There were strawberries, and cookies made of icing which propped up a scroll which included everything I asked them to write. The icing was ganache. It was beautiful and best yet, it was moist and really yummy
The captain had forks, napkins, a knife and plates onboard. As the person who cut the cake and had to transfer the slices to the plates while the boat rocked, I have one suggestion: bring some sort of cake server. I had some slices fall over and the icing ended up on the side of the plates (which ended up on DS white shorts). Otherwise, it was the easiest, best cake experience I've had (and I've also gotten cakes from Narcoossee's & Boardwalk Bakery).
Hope this helps anyone planning to order a cake for a cruise - especially one who waits til the very last minute.
Happy cruising!
