Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part V!

@lurkyloo We are visiting in August and my plan is to get a Elsa/Frozen inspired cake for a reservation at Chef Mickeys (it's for a 6 year olds birthday celebration). I don't need figures or anything complicated so I assume I don't need to make contact too far in advance....

Am I correct?

I'm not Lurkyloo, but based on my experience yesterday, I would at least touch base with them soon if you want a flavor other than chocolate or vanilla. Maybe CR is more accommodating, but GF hinted that I should've called well in advance for that request.:sad1:

To be honest I'm not worried about special flavours, I just want the little girl to have a 'fancy' cake for her birthday.

We are doing Bibbity Bobbity Boutique earlier in the day so it's part of a day of special stuff :)

I think you'll be fine, then. I called about 5 days ahead and there didn't seem to be any time crunch on the theme stuff. I imagine Frozen is a pretty easy/popular theme for them, too.

Lastly, I had two mini-cakes delivered to Akershus for our departure dinner. One was Snow White, for my daughter (vanilla cake with vanilla icing) and one was Aurora (for me - at my daughter's request). I only have a picture of one as we had to have them boxed up, due to the drunk men sitting at the table next to us and ruining our meal - being belligerent to the staff, hitting on all the princesses, having management visit the table every few minutes to tell them to calm down. I was so ready to get out of there, so I asked them if we could take the cakes with us - my daughter was tired and ready to go back to the hotel anyway, so this was the best option.

We took her Snow White cake into the room and ate it that night - it was delicious! Sadly, I don't have a picture of the Aurora cake because I decided to try and get it home the next day and the top tier fell off at some point during the road trip. But I was very disappointed in the glimpse I got of it - I asked for an homage to the "Make it pink, make it blue" scene for my cake. I told them if it was too hard to make the splotches of pink and blue intertwining, it would be fine to ice half of it pink and half blue. What I got was a pink mini-cake with a white chocolate Aurora stuck to the top. Not at all what I asked for and a lackluster end to an otherwise great week of cake experiences. I plan on eating it today, so hopefully it at least tastes okay. But at any rate - here is the Snow White cake and it was adorable and very close to what I asked for (minus the little fondant apple I asked to top it):

Thank you for sharing this. We are celebrating our granddaughter's 1st Birthday at Akershus. We will be doing the Princess Storybook Dining for lunch. We call her "Princess", and would love to have a small birthday cake for her celebration. When you call the number listed in the post, do you just ask for a mini cake, and tell them what you want? Her mom loves Belle, and I thought a Belle themed cake would be perfect for her. I have seen a couple that don't actually have a picture of Belle on them, but are just Belle themed, and thought they were beautiful. We will actually be leaving for our 16 hour drive home shortly after lunch, so we don't want a large cake that will have a lot of left overs to be transported home. It would be nice to have cake for our entire party of 9, but it really isn't necessary. I just would love for her to have something special for her "1st" Birthday. I also would love suggestions if anyone might have them. We will be there the beginning of August. Is it too early to order something now?

I usually start calling/emailing about 3 weeks out, just because it can sometimes take a while to get a hold of someone. And then I always call back 2 or 3 days beforehand to double-check the details of the order in case they have misplaced it.

Just back from our 9 night - 3 cake trip!! I ordered 2 cakes from Pat to be delivered to my room (ok pool - with the Twilight Feast - YUM) at the Poly. Both cakes were right around $110 delivered. The Mary Poppins hat Pat helped guide me. I had requested the 2nd cake to be Moana themed. She had to got to legal for approval, but I ordered in advance so had enough time. They came out great and were a very big hit! The Mary Poppins cake was Carrot w/Cream Cheese. The Moana was Marble with vanilla buttercream.

The final cake was for a bigger celebration during our Yacht Club stay - also delivered to room. I had trouble ordering this cake as Private Dining seemed to not want to make it super special and I was kind of bummed - but said ok for a cake around $87 delivered. Then about a week and a half before delivery I get call - saying they never finalized and gave me 3 options - that I of course went for the expensive option - because I was in full on vacation mode and it's cake at Disney so why not. I did start thinking what have I done - but by then it was too late. The cake was quoted at $187 delivered. Well the cake came on Saturday - and can I just say OMG! The cake was amazing!!! I almost cried cutting into it because it was fabulous. The pic does not even do it justice - was designed even all across the back. The diamond checker board with pearls - all of it just no words to describe.

WOW! That cake is phenomenal! I have often considered an Alice "Unbirthday" cake for one of our trips. I would be in heaven with a cake like this. And it looks huge too. I know people think I'm crazy for what I have paid for cakes at Disney but that was worth every penny from the looks of it.

So the more I am
Thinking about the quote I got, the more annoyed I am getting. I ordered a 6" cake with 'fancy' fondant. (It's actually simply red fondant w white buttons) I was quoted $101. But in the past, and based on the info in the first post, my total should be around $65-80. What am I missing?

It really varies. I paid $75 for my first 6 inch cake and that was with no fondant. The number of layers can vary, the bakeries charge a little bit different prices, fillings cost more, etc. It doesn't sound out of range. I thought fondant cakes usually start around $75.

Really? I have purchased multiple cakes over the years and nerVer paid that much for a chocolate cake. Oh well, it's too late now. I usually get 8" cakes.

Three years ago for DD's 21st birthday, cake delivered to Jiko (so made at AKL) was $45, I believe. It was a 6" red velvet with custard filling with fresh raspberries and vanilla buttercream frosting. No fondant, but they frosted it beautifully with flowers on the top, swirls on the side. Not sure I have a picture, but it was posted in the last Cake Chatter thread (https://www.disboards.com/threads/o...rt-iv-2012-2016.3261922/page-59#post-52773721) and here's the link to the pictures (http://s1122.photobucket.com/user/leebick/media/0-1_zpsde347612.jpeg.html)

I know that you are asking for fondant, but this was a beautiful cake with custom flavors that was delicious; that seems quite the mark-up they are quoting you, even 3 years later and with fondant!

Re: pricing, the only other cake I've ordered at Disney was 7 years ago, delivered to Turf Club and made by the Boardwalk Bakery. It wasn't anything crazy fancy (no fondant or theme), just a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate mousse filling. It must've been an 8" given our party size and I believe it was $55. It was also super delicious!

The one I just ordered sounds more similar to yours (6" with fondant) and I was quoted $29, which I was pleasantly surprised by. Just before hanging up, Pat realized that the swirls on the side she had offered were usually an extra $30, but I guess since she'd already given me the quote she said she thought they could just include them (I wonder if she also felt bad that she shot down most of my original requests). So I guess it would've been $59 technically. FWIW, I wouldn't have added them for $30.

Now you've got me thinking, though - has anyone had a cake show up with a higher price than what was quoted over the phone?

So far, I've always paid exactly what I was quoted. I've seen people report paying less which would be awesome, but no such luck.

Some of the cakes I've had are a:

6 inch 4 layer buttercream with a special filling topped with flowers and a white chocolate slipper for $75
6 inch 2 layer buttercream frosted/filled topped with flowers and a lighted white chocolate castle for $43 (I still feel like I got a store bought substitute, dressed up, on this one because the taste was so different. I've been scared of cheaper cakes ever since, lol)
6 inch 4 layer fondant cake with buttercream filling, some chocolate pirate items (skull, treasure chest, etc.) and a 2D Pirate Mickey on white chocolate for $120
6 inch 3 layer buttercream frosted and filled with some fondant decorations for $65

Just to give an example for pp of the prices differences just for all 6 inch cakes. I did slightly wonder about the one $120 cake only because I felt I'd seen some amazingly detailed Haunted Mansion cakes for under $100 with chocolate decorations and all, but the cake was amazing and I'd spend it again in a heartbeat. Not being a cake decorator it's hard for me to know what materials cost more or how much time some things take to create. My sister is a cake decorator though and she thought all of the cakes I've had were reasonably priced.

ETA: Sorry DVCgal17 I replied to your post and rambled on more in response to pp.

I have paid anywhere from $45-150 for cakes. And have no problem doing so. I just feel like this particular cake is being highly Upcharged. That being said, I think I will call tomorrow to speak to them again. The more I think about the more I think I'm getting a different cake than what I want.

Then it's worth calling to ask. I actually called about the one cheaper cake because it was almost half the price of what I thought was a very similar cake order I did prior and I was very worried. They assured me the price was right and had the size, flavor, etc. all down correctly. It wasn't until i saw it that it made sense why. It was 2 layers vs. 4, had far fewer flowers, and the writing was on the cake and not on a white chocolate banner like the other one was. On paper and what we have in our mind, or the chef has in mind, doesn't always sync up.

However it turns out I hope you enjoy it!

If you want to do something smaller, but still with an unbirthday theme, I had this mad hatter mini cake delivered to 1900 Park Fare. Cost was $50.

Hi all!

After wavering back and forth for literally months, I finally just put in my order for a Lion King custom fondant cake to be delivered to our room at Beach Club for this Thursday. I'm glad I got the order in on time! I'm so excited for the trip, and the cake, and I am so grateful that I had all the cake chatter threads to prepare me for the phone conversation with the CM. I knew to ask for an email with the image choices for the Simba on top of the cake, and that I could also send them some photos for inspiration, as well. I was a little disappointed that I had to size up to an 8 inch cake, after I had read that people have been having success with getting 6 inch custom cakes done, but the CM absolutely wouldn't budge on the size, saying that the only 6 inch available was the new Mickey ear celebration cake (which I knew from these threads that I didn't want!).

I was quoted $76 from Y&B private dining for an 8 inch vanilla cake, with white buttercream filling and frosting, under fondant, with a 2-D Simba image on top, with green grassy-leafy fondant decorations. Does that sound like a reasonable price for what I'm getting? From doing my research on the thread, I think it is, but I just wanted to check with the rest of the Disney cake crew here!

Of course, there will be pictures when we get it!

My brother has been trying to order a cake through the cake hotline. Last week he left two seperate messages for his 6/13 reservation at Trattoria Al Forno, one on Tues and one on Thurs and no one has contacted him. Can anyone tell me if this is still the best way to order of if he should try a different number? Any advice would be appreciated! He's trying to surprise his wife for their anniversary dinner.

We've been back almost a month from our wedding/honeymoon trip and we ate a lot of cake over the 2 weeks so thought I'd share our experiences.

We had our rehearsal dinner at Ohana on May 2nd so I surprised my about-to-be-husband with a Groom's cake

Ordering for Groom's Cake at Ohana
Based on the info from here, I called GF private dining about a month in advance. Pat wasn't in the day I called so I left a message and she called me back a couple days later. I happened to be in Target at the time but wanted to get this doesn't so sequestered myself in a corner and chatted with Pat. We went over the when, how many people etc then discussed design.
I wanted to do a one tier cake with fondant cut-outs of bunch of nerdy references: star wars logo, the triforce from zelda, a Stag (game of thrones reference). (like this but 1 tier)Pat said the legal department gives them a lot of trouble and they couldn't do any of that. boo. I tried to explain how I wanted pretty vague references, no actual logos and asked if I could email photos, but she wasn't having it.
So we brainstormed other ideas and I said I've seen some cool chemistry themed cakes with periodic table and molecules on it. She came up with some cool ideas for bubbling beakers and such but I told her I didn't want anything childish and wanted to stay under $150 so anything 3-D was out. So we settled on periodic table squares around the cake and a large H on a square like hydrogen on top (also out last initial)(I was thinking something like this or this for top, but that's not how it turned out but it was cute). Pat also suggested a banner and we decided on 'We've got chemistry' cheesey but whatever.
Then for flavor, I asked for the cookies and cream mousse we had at our tasting but was told I had to pick from the non-wedding list. I picked chocolate cake with dark chocolate mousse.
For the size, Pat suggested a 10 inch for our group which was 12-14 people. I had wanted an 8 in but I guess that wouldn't be enough for decorations or they thought it was too small; we had way too much cake leftover so I wish we'd gotten the 8 in.

Actual cake experience
When we checked in to Ohana on the night of our dinner, I mentioned the cake and the hostess said she saw it on the reservation so that seemed all good but later during dinner, our waitress brought out little celebration cupcakes and I had to ask about the cake and she said no one relayed the info to her so that was annoying because everyone filled up on bread pudding and cupcake before the cake.

Anywho Here's the final product; total cost with tax etc was $144 for 10 inch cake.

The swirls were metal and H was white modeling chocolate. I was happy with it and hubby was impressed that the elements had the right periodic numbers on them.

and the brownie cupcakes they gave us for celebrating before they realized we had a cake

Wedding Cake
For our wedding cake, I originally wanted a two tier with buttercream stripes and Mickey swiss dot. But I was told that 2 tier wasn't enough for our guest count and was quoted $625 for a three tier in the style I asked for (from GF bakery). Our reception at California Grill included desserts with the menu so I didn't want that much cake. Instead we asked for a 1 tier buttercream striped cake to cut and added on sheet cake to serve.
Final cake info:
$65
made by Contemporary bakery
buttercream covered
Red velvet with white chocolate orange filling
plus quarter sheet cake red velvet with Baily's mousse for $80

And the topper is from Etsy.

And here's us eating cake for breakfast. Between the 3 cakes, we had so much leftover, we lugged in around with us as we switched hotels (bell services kept it refrigerated for us) and eventually had to leave about a quarter of the groom's cake at Poly as we got sick of cake after almost a week and had to switch rooms one more night left at Riverside.
