Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part IV! (2012-2016)

$100 for a mini-cake? That's like 2 cupcakes in size, if it's the same as a mini-cakes we've seen! Maybe you have lots of decorations or something? None of the images you posted came through... can you repost? I am hoping I am misunderstanding what you ordered! Two years ago, we ordered a 6" cake for DD's 21st birthday at Jiko. It was three layers of red velvet cake with white chocolate mousse/fresh raspberry filling, with white chocolate buttercream frosting. Frosting was pinkish-purpleish with Mickey heads piped around the edges and 3 tropical flowers on top. I think I was quoted $32 plus tax and tip.

Do you have a picture from your cake at Jiko? Since we are staying at AKV kidani that sounds like a great option to get a cake there for the room. Still deciding what we wanna do.

Hello everyone! I am sorry if I missed this posted recently elsewhere, but I could only find information from over four years ago. My husband and I are visiting for the first time at the end of August. Only staying two nights at Port Orleans Riverside, but hoping to enjoy it. It will be the week of our 3rd anniversary, and I was considering the possibility of getting a mini cake delivered to our room. I've seen some conflicting information online, so I have a few questions for the experts in here!:smickey:

1. Are the cakes good/worth it? Neither one of us are huge sweets people. We both like vanilla, so vanilla/vanilla is likely what we'd get. I am just wondering if it is worth the hassle.

2. Is gluten-free an option? If so, how much extra is that? It seems like the average price for these mini cakes is around $45, and that seems steep to me already.

3. On another difficult dietary note, does anyone know if they use soy or pretty highly processed oils? (Unfortunately, this matters.:worried:)

4. I know the Boardwalk Bakery services Port Orleans. However, it seems like the Disney cake "experience" isn't exactly as streamlined as it could be. Do I really want to call 407-934-5822 to order from Port Orleans or would I want to call 407-939-5175 to order directly from Boardwalk Bakery?

5. I've seen some writing on the cardboard of the mini cakes. Can you truly only get "three words" or is it possible to get more? I've seen both. If more is an option, what is the cost?

6. Do they deliver the cake to the room? I was hoping it could be a surprise upon check-in. I have already done the online check-in, although I have some concerns that we will be in the right area of the selected resort. That being the case, it might not be the best idea if I have to try to sweet talk the hotel desk into moving us. (I'm new to all this, and thought it was odd you can't specify Magnolia Terrace vs. Alligator Bayou.) Thoughts on how complicated this might be?

7. Would the fondant or the buttercream be better? Personally I am not a fan of super-sweet icing (obnoxiously, I am not even supposed to have sugar, so whenever I eat it I REALLY taste it) and neither of us are big icing fans in general.

I appreciate the feedback. We're excited to try this Disney thing, but I think we're both experiencing some trepidation, and I want to make sure this is as "magical" as possible. I've seen some pretty cute mini cakes on these threads. We didn't have a wedding cake, so I thought it might be a nice thing to do as a surprise. Again though, we aren't cake fanatics and I have a lot of stupid dietary restrictions. I am already anxious about eating on site. Reading this back it sounds like I am crazy for even thinking about ordering a cake, and maybe I am.:stitch2: Blame those super cute ocean cakes from the Grand Floridian for inspiring me.

Sadly, I'm ordering a cake for the first time, so I can't help with those questions. I was wondering though if you had considered having chocolate covered strawberries delivered instead of cake? I believe you would order those the same way as a cake, and hopefully it wouldn't give you the same allergy/dietary issues or be too sweet.

Strawberries would be great, but according to the website:

"Do you sell chocolate covered strawberries?

We do not sell chocolate covered strawberries. Sliced or decorated fruit is available through in-room dining at select Walt Disney World® Resorts. We offer fresh whole fruits (oranges, red apples & green apples) in some of our gifts." :sad2:

But calling for a cake you are speaking to in room dining not Floral and Gifts so it should be possible. Certainly it's worth a phone call.

I would definitely call and check. If you're ordering using the information from Post 1 it shouldn't be an issue. Back on pg192:

I spoke with Pat just a few minutes ago. She recommended two mini cakes stacked on top of one another covered with fondant to look like the Mad Hatter's hat instead of going with the two tired mini cake with butter cream. I went with chocolate for the cake and dark chocolate mousse. She quoted $65. I also order 4 chocolate covered strawberries but do not think those were included in the price. Thanks for all the information you have posted. It will make for a wonderful surprise for my daughter's 16th birthday. I'll post pictures when we return.

I I am ordering for a diner at 1900 Park Fare not a room delivery. That may be the reason you are getting a different answer. Best of luck!

I need recommendations and suggestions. We will be at WDW in December celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. Just DH and I - not kids! woohoo! Our first night we are having dinner at Kona and I would love to have a cake delivered at the end of the meal to celebrate our 30 years. DH is highly allergic to strawberries so I can't have anything with them - but I would love to hear suggestions and especially see photos of mini cakes or something similar that I could order.

Thanks :)

Looking for first birthday cake ideas for my son...

Staying at POFQ, need to feed about 8, looking to spend about $60. Would like as much Disney Magic as possible. Any suggestions? I'm looking for something more than a grocery store cake because I could just grab one of those at anytime. Bonus points if I can get some sort of mousse.

We thought about the Mickey Mouse cake, but now I'm thinking of seeing if something with a Woody theme is in our budget.

We would be having it at the resort in the evening with family who is going to be with us. I know they deliver to the room, but could we take it down to the pool or another common area??

Any help would be much appreciated!!

I'm going to go contrarian here for the cake thread and suggest that maybe something different than a cake would work better? Although your last paragraph does point at a cake. We've stayed at POR and POFQ and it's a great choice! Once, my sister ordered a gift basket to our room to celebrate my children's birthday and that was so much fun! We had fruit, candy, a birthday card from Mickey along with balloons. We nibbled on the treats for a couple of days and it was festive and special. I just peeked and you can get something similar for an anniversary. You get champagne, two Mickey flutes, chocolates. You can also make a custom basket that would include just items you can eat--rice crispie treats? There's lots of options on the website, but if you call, you'll find out that they can put together even more. It can all be delivered to your room either before you arrive, or on a day you choose.

Just a thought pixiedust: Happy Anniversary!

Only a Contemporary resort pastry chef can answer that question for you, unfortunately. They probably don't have a screen print image they can use, but if you did something more interpretive (volcanoes, sharks, tropical foliage, etc.) they can probably do something for you.

Contacted them. Chef Brian said he needs to send the image to the legal department for approval. I don't have high hoped for it being approved but was able to set up another cake incase it can not be approved.

Can you have a custom cake delivered to a table service restaurant to be picked up without having a reservation there?
Or would it be possible to pick it up at the Boardwalk Bakery?

Just wanted to post some mini cakes pics from our visit last week. We stayed at POR and I called and ordered 2 mini cakes in the colors of Belle and Tiana. My girls, DD16 and DD15, aren't very adventurous eaters so I went with yellow cake, vanilla buttercream filling. I forgot to add words to the foiled cake plate/tray but they turned out very well. They were $35 each. I had the choice of picking them up at the food court or Boatwright's. The girls loved them and they tasted great! I would order from Boardwalk Bakery again!

Very nice! I'm glad you mentioned that you could pick it up at the food court or Boatwrights. I want to order a cake for my daughter (we are staying at POFQ), but Boatwrights doesn't open until 5:00 and I need to pick it up in the early afternoon. The food court would work great!

1. Are the cakes good/worth it? Neither one of us are huge sweets people. We both like vanilla, so vanilla/vanilla is likely what we'd get. I am just wondering if it is worth the hassle.

People who like sweets like Disney's cakes. If you are worried that the cake will be too sweet, you can ask for whipped cream frosting instead of buttercream. Definitely don't get the white chocolate mousse filling, though — that's super-sweet.

2. Is gluten-free an option? If so, how much extra is that? It seems like the average price for these mini cakes is around $45, and that seems steep to me already.

They will tell you to order from Erin McKenna's Bakery at Disney Springs if you ask for gluten-free.

3. On another difficult dietary note, does anyone know if they use soy or pretty highly processed oils? (Unfortunately, this matters.:worried:)

Probably. Again, Erin McKenna's is your best bet here, but if you really really want Disney to make the cake, call the appropriate number from Post #2 and have them ask the chef.

No. As explained in the first post, if you call BoardWalk Bakery directly for a cake that you want delivered anyplace besides BoardWalk Bakery, they will tell you that they don't deliver there. The ONLY way to get a BWB cake at one of the resorts they service is to order through the resort.

5. I've seen some writing on the cardboard of the mini cakes. Can you truly only get "three words" or is it possible to get more? I've seen both. If more is an option, what is the cost?

There is no cost for writing. Then number of words is up to the chef. You can ask, but they may say no.

6. Do they deliver the cake to the room? I was hoping it could be a surprise upon check-in. I have already done the online check-in, although I have some concerns that we will be in the right area of the selected resort. At POR you cannot have the cake delivered directly to your room. You need to pick it up at Boatwright's or the food court.

7. Would the fondant or the buttercream be better? Personally I am not a fan of super-sweet icing (obnoxiously, I am not even supposed to have sugar, so whenever I eat it I REALLY taste it) and neither of us are big icing fans in general.

Fondant cakes have buttercream under the fondant, so it's a no-win situation for you there. Again, I suggest you ask for whipped cream frosting.

Or would it be possible to pick it up at the Boardwalk Bakery?

You can always pick up a cake at BoardWalk Bakery. You can sometimes get Private Dining to agree to deliver your cake to a table-service restaurant for pickup without a reservation. You'd need to call the appropriate number in Post #2 and ask.

Thanks for answering all my questions!

This is the cake I ordered for my niece's birthday dinner at Akershus last week. I had seen a picture of the mini-cakes from CRT and just wanted something like that in pink and purple (her favorite colors), and it was perfect!

Did anyone know how much this mini cake cost? It is adorable. I may have missed the price throughout the other posts. Thanks.

One more question. I know that a cake can be delivered to the Port Orleans Riverside food court, but will they also deliver to the French Quarter food court?
