Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part IV! (2012-2016)

I just sent an email to Chef Brian. I'm FINALLY ordering a cake for my son's first birthday at Whispering Canyon Cafe. I've been reading this thread for forever planning the perfect cake- it feels so weird to have finally sent that email. I emailed my request for a western, Mickey themed cake, bright colors with the number one somewhere on it. It's for 27 adults and 4 kids, but I told him I do not want a sheet cake. I'm hoping to just go with the 10" round per Lurkyloo's prior advise that a cake that size may be enough...especially since everyone will be so full from the all-you-can-eat skillets at WCC. They just need a taste, plus I'm sending them home with gift bags full of candy. Fingers crossed it'll work. This is the cake I really like and sent it with the email. We'll see.

Well, I emailed on Wednesday & heard from Chef Brian early Thursday morning. He only asked if I had the mickey topper, so knowing my options are probably the hand-painted figure or the screen printed I quickly looked online to see if I could find something better. I found a few Cowboy Mickey statues but I went with the lenox one since it was most like the one in the picture & it'd be a nice keepsake. So I emailed him back a picture of it. He emailed me back this morning with a real short message stating that they could do a cake similar to the one pictured & it'd be $350 & if I have no other questions, to call & order the cake. I then received an email from "George" from CR private dining offering to help me with my cake order, so I'm unsure if this is rather than calling or a double response from another chef.

I feel a little nervous that Chef Brian wasn't a little more descriptive but he said similar to pictured so I guess that should be enough. I'm also nervous that the lenox statue is too fancy for this cake. He didn't say anything about if the 10 inch is too small or anything like that so maybe when I call to order or email this "George" guy I'll get more details on the sizing & I'll decide on the flavor. I'd love to do the peanut butter cup I've been seeing on here but babies aren't allowed chocolate until one so I don't want his first taste of chocolate to be on our trip & he have some sort of reaction to it or not like it. So I think I'm gonna go with what I did last time cause it was SO good. Yellow cake with bavarian cream & fresh strawberries. It was a big hit last time, so if it ain't broke...

The 10-inch cake will be plenty big for that topper—and I don't think it looks too fancy for the cake you want!

Well, the guy George was the one who I would have called to order the cake. He started the process via email and then called me for the credit card info. Chef Brian quoted $350 but with the Bavarian cream & fresh strawberries it came to $376 plus tip & gratuity. We have the TIW card so that should help. Via the ordering process George asked me to send a picture of the cake that I sent to Chef Brian so I did. He told me it was going to be an adorable cake and asked that when I receive it at the party to please take some pictures of it and email it to the CR cake email. Also, he asked what flavor I wanted the top layer (??), so I'm assuming he figured I was getting both tiers. So I told him all the same flavoring just in case. He said they will not put the topper on and I will not be allowed to go in the back to place the topper. He said I could speak with the waitstaff to see if I could go off to the side to place the topper otherwise I have to put the topper on at the table in front of all the guests. Don't like the idea of that so I'm hoping the WCC staff will work with me on that.

So I think that's it. Next post should be of the cake... in 22 days!!

Thanks so much for all the support everyone, especially Lurkyloo. So excited!!

So glad I found this thread! We will be in Disney to celebrate my Dad's birthday in November and this thread has given me tons of ideas for a cake for him. We are having his birthday dinner at Artist Point, so I am planning on ordering a cake from the Contemporary. Before I contact them, I could use all of your excellent advise on a few things. First, what size should I order. We will be 8 adults. I am sure we will also order a few desserts of the menu--Dad loves dessert and loves Artist Point cobbler... So do you think a 6 inch cake is big enough? Second, I am thinking of doing a Goofy/Baseball theme, with the cake decorated like a baseball diamond and a screen picture of Goofy in a baseball uniform. For the screen print, can I send them any image I like from the internet or does Disney have stock pictures I need to choose from? When I google pictures of Goofy playing baseball there are lots of cute images. Any other suggestions for the cake decorations are most welcome!! Finally, I would like to try to keep this to a budget of about $100. Will that be possible? Thanks!!

So I really had my heart set on a Mad Hatter cake for my unbirthday celebration at Park Fare in December, but really think that will be too much cake for my family of 4, especially since I will be having it delivered at breakfast (we got a mini cake earlier this month and it was plenty!).

If I am working with the GF, anyone know if I can get a more customized mini cake? Something similar to the image below, where the top half could be made to look like the hat? (But without all the other decorations?)

Do you think it was the fondant icing or the gluten free that didn't taste right? (most kids don't like fondant, and I don't either)
They were very nice looking though.

Yes, they looked 'nice' but for the price, I expected more than 'nice'. It was definitely the cake that was the problem. The fondant was removed prior to eating.

They are beautiful cakes. Was it the flavor you didn't like? I've had the gluten free cake before and it's definitely not what we've become accustomed to with the GF options these days. But smothered in the delicious frosting and I still enjoyed it. If you had guests who didn't have to be gluten free I could see it being a disappointment.

We are lucky to have some amazing bakeries near our home that do gluten free in a way that you would have no clue it wasn't a typical wheat based cake. I think Disney might still use one of the mixes that in the olden days was as good as it got. In that sense, they haven't quite caught up with the times.

Sorry to hear you weren't happy with them, but I hope they still enjoyed their birthday celebration.

One cake was chocolate with chocolate mousse, the other vanilla with white chocolate mousse. Our guests don't need to be gluten-free, but they all have family members with celiac's disease, so are all accustomed to eating gluten-free. There are many better gluten-free cakes recipes available with little effort, but we've had good gluten-free cakes from Disney before, but these cakes as well as our the one soon our previous trip were bad. I'm not saying they weren't good, but they were bad. Inedible. I love desserts and am partial to cakes and am happy to eat pretty much any cake, we tossed out 1.5 cakes this time because not even the frosting could hide how bad the cake was. :(

Yes, the celebration was great, but the cakes were supposed to be a highlight, and they were a lowlight.

Yep!

You have to use the images Disney already has, and there's no where to see a gallery of them. The bakery can email you some. Also, if you want that much stuff atop the cake, they may tell you that you have to do an 8-inch.

Finally, I would like to try to keep this to a budget of about $100. Will that be possible?

For a 6-inch that's not too elaborate, yes. Tell them what your budget is and ask for ideas that fit within it.

Your image isn't coming through for me for some reason, but you could ask to email it in to GF private dining and see if they can work with it.

I love to eat. I'm not a small girl. We got a 6" cake, and you could easily get 8 very nice size slices.

I have to say I LOVE LOVE LOVE George. We leave for our trip in 6 days and will be celebrating our son's 4th birthday on his actual birthday day at Chef Mickey. With the help of this thread I also emailed Chef Brian and worked out a cake with him when we then told me to call. I hadn't had a chance to call when I got a phone call from George later that day asking about the cake.

George emailed me back and forth for a couple days after our chat on the phone and helped me place the order. Then weeks later he called on a weekend to ask some more questions to make sure it would be perfect. He was always so friendly and kind I told him I feel like he's my little guy's fairy Godfather ;)

I can't wait until next Saturday to see the cake, I am beyond excited. This is our little guys first ever real birthday celebration. :lovestruc

I had a cake delivered to Caribbean Beach Resort. The cake was $23 and I thought there was a $3 delivery fee plus 18% gratuity added. I have a charge from Old Port Royale on my credit card for $24.50. The only thing I can think of is the cake because my receipt when we left showed I had no charges to the room. But $24.50 doesn't sound right because they would need to add $3 for the delivery fee (so $26 then) plus the gratuity.

Hi lurkyloo, thanks for keeping this thread current! We are staying at All Stars Music in early November and I am thinking of getting a cake- maybe just a mini cake, since DD22 and I are the only ones in our party. I see that ASMu is serviced by Boardwalk Bakery. Should I email or call Boardwalk Bakery FIRST and see what options are available, as I know I want either a mini cake or something 6" that is more interesting than vanilla/vanilla or chocolate/chocolate, and then call ASMu to place the order? I really like the idea of a 6" chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting as filling and vanilla frosting on the outside, or a white cake with peanut butter frosting/chocolate ganache filling and vanilla frosting on the outside, but I am not sure if BWB will do this. If we get a mini-cake, I'd probably go with just vanilla/vanilla. The decorations are the easy part- I just want something Christmas themed- but I don't want to end up with a "podium" cake, so I'm not sure in what order I should do things. Would you have an email address for BWB? I can't make calls from work.

Also- what is the procedure/cost for getting a cake delivered to ASMu? Ostensibly, I'd like it to be in our room when we check in, but don't want to pay huge money (aka, delivery charge, gratuity, and tax on that!) for the convenience.

WARNING to all posters: Once you get a cake for one trip, you will be HOOKED and want a cake EVERY time you go to Disney World! :cake: ::yes::

So, we are headed back to Disney for Christmas which means another Disney birthday cake for my son. I've had pretty good luck in the past working with Pat, knock on wood, but I was wondering if there is an email you can send pictures to for the Grand Floridian cakes? My son has a white puff ball, for lack of a better descriptive word, of a cute Yeti we bought from Animal Kingdom one year. I want his cake this year to be based off of it. Cute though... not scary. So I was hoping to send a picture. Have you seen any Yeti cakes?

And do you think I can still get a 6" cake there for around $100?

Thanks!!

Stephanie

We celebrated DS's 16th birthday at California Grill last month. We surprised (and I mean, REALLY surprised!) him with a Mickey Premium Bar cake. It was a three layer chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream inside. I was told it feeds 15 but there were 12 of us at dinner, and we only got through the ears! The cake wayyyyy exceeded my expectations on every level! IMG_0590.JPGIMG_0581.JPG

That's incredible!

I love that cake! It definitely was a happy birthday for your son.

That has to be the best cake I have seen in a long time. Care to share cost?

The cake was $150, which when they first quoted me, I thought was a little steep. Now, that I have seen and tasted the cake, my opinion has changed....I think $150 was a steal!

$150 for a cake is pretty expensive but for that cake, it most definitely is a steal! That is a huge cake plus the design is incredible. Who wouldn't want a giant Mickey bar made out of cake? Yum!

***REPOST!***

OK, I've got another fabulous cake from Chef Brian & Co. at the Contemporary for you!

My husband is a huge Muppets fan, and Fozzie Bear is his favorite. I inquired about doing a cake with Fozzie's face on it, kinda like this Animal cake, but they are only allowed to do screen prints of the characters, and the only image they are authorized to use that has Fozzie in it is a group shot. So instead I asked for an "interpretive" version of Fozzie covered in his fur, wrapped in his polka dot tie and topped with his pork pie hat.

I was a little worried when the Private Dining cast member who took my order kept referring to "Ozzie Bear" (who doesn't know the Muppets???), but all the details were in my emails to Chef Brian. I didn't send any inspiration photos besides this nice shot of the Fozzie puppet and a pic of a cake with a fondant hat on it.

Price: $106

Size:
8-inch

Date Received: 9/26/14

Location: California Grill

Flavors: Chocolate cake with a filling of layered chocolate ganache and peanut butter buttercream frosting (NOT mousse). I was trying to replicate the taste of BoardWalk Bakery's late, lamented chocolate-peanut butter cake slice, and it worked!

The cake turned out EXACTLY as I'd pictured it, with amazingly accurate buttercream fur in exactly the right shade. The moment he spotted it, my husband exclaimed, "Fozzie!" and his face lit up like a kid's. Priceless!

Even better, this cake tasted fantastic! I have officially found my all-time favorite Disney cake flavor combo. The fudgey chocolate ganache made all the difference, and the buttercream "fur" all over the cake didn't hurt!

Lurkey Loo,
This is a fantastic idea, from the style to the flavoring!!!

I've got my 3rd trip coming up that requires a cake, and you've helped me tremendously with the first two trips, equaling 5 cakes! But it's been 2 years, so when did Chef Brian return? I thought he left the contemp?
