Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part IV! (2012-2016)

Hello cake people! I'm working on a cake design, well in my head for now, for ordering and delivery to our resort the first night. It will be an anniversary celebration.
Now onto my question. Regarding custom cakes, has anyone ever managed one 6 inch square cake? Our wedding cake 13 years ago was square layers with a fondant ribbon tied around each layer. It was a Christmas theme wedding and I'd like to order something similar if possible without breaking my bank.

Just asking opinion if someone has seen this specialized cake without having to order a traditional customized wedding cake.

If it matters, we will be staying at the Beach Club. I will be calling next week to ask the same questions but just wondering if anyone had experience with this. Thanks for any advice,

I wanted to share the cakes I had made for out last trip for my DDs. I asked for two mini cakes, one ariel themed and one pirate Mickey theme to be delivered at the Wave. I did not offer any guidance with decorations past that. I was hopeful if I gave them less direction that I would get a more creative cake. I have to say that I was a little unhappy with how they came out. I'm not sure I've seen many other cakes on here with plain white frosting. You'd think for at least the Ariel cake it would be tinted blue.

I'm not sure I will order again. I was very clear that I did NOT want mousse filling. Buttercream only. I got mousse in both of these. One chocolate, one vanilla. The prior cake I had made a couple years ago also had mousse which I expressly asked not to have. I'm not sure where the miscommunication is. I emailed Chef Donald and talked to the cake hotline and could not have been more clear. Anyway, here are the cakes. My girls liked them and that's all that matters. $50/each and I was able to use My TiW card for 20% off FYI.

I just realized I haven't shared anything about the cake I ordered for our May trip! It was the second vacation I've ordered a cake for. Both times I had them delivered to MK restaurants (Crystal Palace on a previous trip, BOG dinner this time around). I found the advance communication with MK special events to be really good--they answered a lot of questions and were very helpful--but the cake I received did not match the description we agreed on. My top priority for the cake was grey stuff filling, only available in cakes delivered to BOG. I was told that the filling couldn't be used in mini cakes, only 6" or larger. So for the two of us I ordered a 6" cake (which was obviously way too much, but ah well). I asked for Wishes-inspired decorations and for the cake to be covered in a dark icing, either black, dark purple, or navy blue. I was told that the sides would be covered in fireworks and the top would be covered in stars, and that the whole cake would be covered in pixie dust. I also asked for a banner to read "Make a Wish, Megan." I was quoted 38$ for the cake, which seemed like a steal when I ordered it.

Here's an image of the cake I received. To me, the cake looks like something you would find at a chain grocery store--the frosting doesn't match the colour I requested, and the decorations are much more sedate than I anticipated (the one good part: the top was covered in edible sparkles, and it looked pretty in the West Wing's "lightning"). The flavour was good, and the layer of grey stuff filling was really thick. I was pretty disappointed with the appearance of the cake but it was a surprise for my partner's birthday and she was really happy with it, so I didn't complain. But for future trips I think I'll avoid ordering cakes through the Contemporary's baking department (who service MK restaurants). This cake was just lacklustre, especially for how much prep and effort I put into the planning, and it's left a bad taste in my mouth.

I've been following this thread for months. Looking at pics online, going thru all the previous cake chatter threads.... And I still need help! I'm not very creative and I want a creatively done cake. We are 35 days out from our vaca, so cake ordering time is nearing. We'll be ordering from AKL for delivery to our room. Occasion is our son's 3y bday. I know I want a 6" cake, vanilla, undecided on filling right now. My dilemma: he is obsessed with Disney. Certainly got that from mommy! He loves Mickey and Minnie - and when asked he said he wants Minnie on his cake. But he also loves McQueen, Dusty, the whole Fab 5 plus Daisy. He's a fan of all the Disney Jr characters and recently went nuts over Bambi. Can't leave out 101 Dalmatians. You get the idea. Show the kid something Disney and he's over the top in love. He also knows he's going to "Mickey's House" (WDW) and is super excited. His 2y birthday was Mickey Mouse clubhouse themed. Managed to pull that off myself. So - any suggestions on how to incorporate tons of Disney Magic into a cake for my Disney obsessed turning-three-year-old?! I'm estimating a budget of around $100 (reasonable???)

If he wants Minnie, I'd stick with a Minnie theme. Does he have a favorite episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, or a favorite old Minnie cartoon? You could incorporate the theme of that episode, or since you're staying at AKL you could do a safari Minnie theme. Does he like space? Astronaut Minnie. Cars? Minnie driving / racing. Minnie with Dalmatian puppies. Etc. ;)

I think I would stick with Minnie theme too, if that's what he's asked for. you could do something really cute with Minnie's outfit (like a cute red cake with polka dots?). and I like the idea above about a safari themed Minnie cake, if you think he'd like it.

if you want to incorporate lots of disney, I would say maybe pick up some cake decorations of your own to place on top/around the cake? or another idea: along with a cake you could order a basket through special events? you can't do balloons at AKL lounge, and this option would be more expensive, but since you're having the cake delivered to your room it's an option you might want to consider?

I had a cake delivered to Caribbean Beach Resort. The cake was $23 and I thought there was a $3 delivery fee plus 18% gratuity added. I have a charge from Old Port Royale on my credit card for $24.50. The only thing I can think of is the cake because my receipt when we left showed I had no charges to the room. But $24.50 doesn't sound right because they would need to add $3 for the delivery fee (so $26 then) plus the gratuity.

Did you order it in advance of your stay? (Just figuring out when they charged you in relation to ordering time.) Did they deliver it to your room?

I ordered it 3 weeks before we arrived. We checked in on the 8th, they delivered it on the 10th, and we checked out on the 16th which is when the charge was submitted. And it was delivered so that was like a $3 charge right?

My guess that was just the cake and tax. (Not sure what the prepared food tax is in Florida. In Virginia, it is 9.5 percent and up depending on locality.)
Someone must have forgotten to add delivery and tip.
I am asking because we are staying there over the holidays, and I would like Santa to deliver one of those Mickey head cakes on Christmas Eve (early evening) while were out.
Don't think it would be the same, if we have to pick it up...lol!

We celebrated DS's 16th birthday at California Grill last month. We surprised (and I mean, REALLY surprised!) him with a Mickey Premium Bar cake. It was a three layer chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream inside. I was told it feeds 15 but there were 12 of us at dinner, and we only got through the ears! The cake wayyyyy exceeded my expectations on every level!

Darn! I can not see your pics. FTR, the bulk of the pics on here are just icons on my laptop.
Does it look like an ice cream bar with a stick? How much did it cost? Could you get any kind of frosting (say the peanut butter everyone is raving about) or was it one of those this is what it is cakes?
I am planning on having my daughter's sweet 16 dinner at the Cali, too.

We ordered two cakes on our recent trip.
My email to the MK cake email:
"I'd like to order a cake for my dining reservation at the Plaza Restaurant at 5:15pm on 9/15/15. We're having a family dinner to thank our parents for throwing our wedding on 9/13/15. I'd like an 8inch cake that expresses our gratitude and has a light wedding theme: white & light blue colors, doves, bells, flowers, etc
I'd prefer this cake to be done in buttercream only, if possible (no fondant)
Please let me know what flavors are available. Red velvet would be our first choice."

Response: "I checked with the bakery about your cake and they said they can make an 8-inch cake iced in buttercream with gum paste flowers in white and light blue on top and the price would be $70. You also have these choices for fillings: vanilla buttercream, chocolate buttercream, white chocolate mousse filling, and dark chocolate mousse filling."

We went with red velvet cake and white chocolate filling and it was perfect.

Yeah, sounds about right on the tax. Tax in Florida is 0.65 and for a $23 purchase, it comes out to be an extra 1.495 which would be $1.50.

I was wondering if we were suppose to maybe tip the girl who dropped it off & also give her a $3 delivery fee but she just said "happy birthday!" and walked away in a hurry so i'm assuming you don't pay them that in person :confused3

I feel like I read this somewhere, but want to be sure, as I'll be ordering soon. I will be requesting a screen print for an 8 inch cake. Do I need to specify that I want a 2D standing screen print? Will they put the screen print flat on the cake, if I don't say otherwise? (Epcot FutureWorld bakery)

Also, anyone know if anyone at that location can e-mail image choices?

Yes, you need to specify. They usually don't send you all the images to choose from. You have to ask, "Do you have X character?" and they'll show you what they have. It's very... Inefficient...

Let us know what they say, but I have never ever seen them do a square cake.

I would have been ticked off to get mousse when I specifically requested buttercream! Sounds like the Contemporary was having an off week, based on your post and @marchingstar 's. You might just write them back to let them know they screwed up.

Dang... Did you let them know you were unhappy with the cake? I can't believe they didn't even do the frosting color right!

After reading this thread for a year, I am excited to finally post the cake I had made for my husband for his Birthday. We had dinner at Sanaa, and I had worked with the pastry team at Animal Kingdom Lodge. I told them we were going to MNSSHP and also Halloween Horror Nights so I wanted a Halloween themed cake and I sent them several pictures of what I wanted, and told them I wanted the leaves and the cake to have fall colors. The leaves were colored sugar. This cake was above and beyond what we would have dreamed of!!!! It looked great!!!! It was a 8 inch chocolate cake with peanut butter mouse. I was quoted $70 for the cake, but when the bill came I was charged $40!!!!! I was doing the happy dance!!! It tasted as good as it looked!!!cake1.jpg
