With the exception of last night's episode, I've enoyed the season so far. I didn't know there were only 2 seasons remaining.

While I thought last night's episode was "sweet", it came out of nowhere. This guy has never been on before & all of a sudden there is an entire episode about him. I'm not too sure where that came from. I could have done without it.

(true, he was never "really" there) He has impacted each of them in a small way, that at the same time was huge. I teared up at the end when they showed he was the last one to talk to Mary Alice.

I agree it was a sweet episode but it showed little about the lives of the characters - I thought it might reveal a little bit more.

Also it really bothered me that the handyman did so much at Susan's presumably while she was married to Mike and well Mike is always shown fixing things himself...I think they even showed the handyman doing something with the plumbing at Susan's and well that just seems silly to hire a handyman to fix the pipes when your husband is a plumber!

... And that was why he was so helpful to all of them.

Yes, I believe it was a very good episode, and therefore quite rare. Given how good it was, the minor nits about the context of the handyman in previous episode didn't bother me at all.

I found the episode boring. Everyone on TVguide.com was talking about how touching it was. Maybe if it had been a character we actually knew, but Beau Bridges was just thrown in there so that they could show flashbacks. They could have just shown a clip show for their 100th episode, since this one did nothing to advance the storyline. I hope they give Gaby more to do. Watching her be a mother is boring and they don't seem to know what to do with Katherine now that her secret has been discovered.

OK, so your handyman dies. You feel sad. Do you and your neighbors really plan a memorial service for him? Give me a break. This episode was boring and stupid.

I told my DH halfway through that he should have let me watch Big Love at 9:00 instead of watching DH, seeing whereas it was so bad, and all of the commercials that I could have FFd through on the DVR. At least Big Love was good when I watched it on the DVR.

They're people too, and indeed folks who provide a personal service, so therefore they can be in a position to touch people's lives in significant ways -- especially if it is someone who, for reasons revealed at the end of the episode, was on a crusade to be there for people.

Anyone can be important to others. It just requires the intention to be of service.

I agree with this. It was like the writers didn't know what else to do, so they wrote an episode about someone who has been around that we've never seen, about things we already know about the characters.

Probably so that those of us who thought it stunk last week would really KNOW that it stunk this week.

They re-broadcast episode #501 on December 14, and they re-broadcast episode #502 on December 21, so episode #503 was the next episode ready to be re-broadcast.

There are 24 episodes going to be made this season (two more than Season 1, same as Season 2, and one more than Season 3), and 39 weeks between the premiere on September 28, 2008, and the finale, expected on May 17, 2009. That means that on 15 weeks during that period they will either have to show a re-run or pre-empt the program.

Since they had 11 episodes left to re-broadcast (before last Sunday night's broadcast), and 17 weeks left to broadcast episodes, 6 weeks will need to be re-runs or pre-emptions. They cannot re-broadcast or pre-empt episodes in early-/mid-March or in May, due to Nielsen sweeps.

Why this past Sunday instead of some other Sunday? It is hard to say. Clearly, this coming Sunday will be a re-run (because of the Super Bowl), so that puts two re-runs in a row. That tends to be better, because viewers tend to hate the "one week a new episode; the next week a re-run; then another new episode; then another re-run" routine. I think it is also pretty-well understood that hiati of more than three weeks tend to hurt programs (with specific exceptions, shows like Lost, Heroes, and 24). So given that they had to do 6 more re-runs (or pre-emptions), they're probably aiming to do three sets of 2 re-runs in a row. The first is obviously last week and this week. The second pair will probably be right after February sweeps (which is in March this year, so figure late-March for the re-runs). The final pair probably right before the end, so figure late-April. I'm not sure though.

I was just glad they did, because I was at orchestra rehearsal for the original showing. I'm sure it annoyed those of you who had seen it originally, but it worked out nicely for me. And btw way to go on the sciency explanation bicker!
