Official "Castle" thread! Spoilers welcomed!

I watched "Still" last night for the millionth time and caught something new! After she says "I love you" and he says "I love you too" and walks out of the room, she mouths "always". Wow.

Now I have to go back and look for that. While enjoy clip shows, it's not often a clip show holds my attention and contributes to the continuing story the way "Still" does. It's one of my favorite episodes.

I agree. And it shocked the heck out of me that I missed that, considering how many times I've watched it.

There's been a lot of debate on that. I'm convinced that she takes a breath then says "always" silently. You can watch her mouth moving--it's more than just inhaling.

quick comment on last night's episode: loved what the realtor was really there for!

What was the song that Castle and Beckett picked as "their song"? I was wondering if they were going to get a DJ or if Castle was going to hire the original artist.

It was "In My Veins" by Andrew Belle. That's the song they used at the end of Always. It starts right after Kate resigns, while Alexis is doing her speech, and while Kate is sitting in the rain on the swing set. It finishes, then you hear Kate knock on Castle's door......

They didn't say whether they're using a DJ or not.

I know they didn't say. I was trying to figure out if the artist was still alive or not. After Kate made such a big deal about not having somebody else sing that Frank Sinatra song, I figure that if the artist is alive Castle will hire him. If he's not alive (or unable to preform) they'll get a DJ. That's just my theory.

ETA: Ok, I just goggled Andrew Belle. Yeah, I think Castle is going to hire him.

Andrew Belle is still alive. He tweeted the "surprise" the other night. I think the DJ/band thing was for the joke of it - that the 2 of them have lots of different opinions on things, but they somehow meet in the middle.

Another comment: They've never said exactly how old Rick is, but the episode seemed to be saying that Castle was born in 1969 - talking about popular songs from 1987, when he would have been graduating from high school. We know that Kate was 31 when she was shot in May 2011 according to the dialogue during the scene in Rise. Her birthday is Nov. 18 so she was born in 1979. (which also fits with her being 19 when her mom was killed in Jan. 1999).

I've thought about the wedding a little more. And this is what I think will happen (based on nothing more than my thoughts. I have read nothing in any spoiler or on any website to make me think this)

1. Last episode of this season. Either no case or a quick resolve. The majority of the episode will be the wedding prep. Lots of sweet/funny stuff between all of the 'family'

2. Kate will ask her dad to step out for a minute.

3. We'll see Rick & his best men Espo & Ryan waiting at the end of the aisle.

4. Jim comes running in announcing - "she's gone - Kate's gone!" End of season 6!!

Then 1st episode next season is them looking for & finding her. haven't decided if the kidnapper is 3XK/Kelly or Bracken but I think it's more likely to be 3XK. But she will need recovery time, so there's the time jump, she won't wear 'that' dress since she was kidnapped while wearing it, and they will have a small low key wedding at the house in the Hamptons.

I'm actually beginning to wonder if the wedding will be at the "Hamptons" house after all. Something in the back of my mind says that with Rick's penchant for bold romantic gestures, he just might find a way to have it at "their" park -- the one with the swings. If they took over the entire park they could set it up nicely.

I saw that song coming for the same reason -- the big romantic gesture is one of the show's trademarks, and revisiting that song fit that bill. (Even though the two of them presumably did not actually hear "You're In My Bones" during Always, we did, and other than the Caskett theme, it is the love song most widely associated with the show.) Castle's budget normally doesn't allow for paying big royalties for music, so they try to use up-and-coming artists wherever possible, because they are usually happy to sell the TV rights for a reasonable fee.. The royalties for both Sinatra and Springsteen are astronomical for television shows, because of the DVD market and syndication issues. ("We'll Meet Again" wasn't an issue, because under UK copyright law, it has recently fallen into the public domain.)

I liked the little look-back to "Cops and Robbers" -- the bank robbers going for the safe-deposit boxes. I also really liked the bit where they simultaneously looked under the desk when Jordan's knees started to shake.

PS: Missy, if you think Castle will ask Espo and Ryan to be in the wedding, does that mean that Kate will have to ask Jenny as well as Lainie? Personally, I think there is a good chance that his "best man" will be female: Alexis.
(The "best man" at my wedding was actually my MIL; she had to step in when DH' brother failed to show up in time for the ceremony -- he strolled in when the reception was half-over; looked at DH and asked, "Oh, am I late?")

I know a lot of people think Alexis will be best girl, but I think the comedy of Espo/Ryan fighting it out, but Castle picking both of them is too good. Kate will have Lanie and Alexis as her best women. Jenny's got to deal with Sarah Grace.

I think it's kind of obvious I enjoyed Monday's episode. I didn't expect a lot from it, figured it would be funny (it was) but the added romantic touches made it really a favorite for me.

First, some quotes:

Beckett: "Are you trying to get me in the mood, Castle?"
Castle: "Yes I am. In the mood to select one of these amazing wedding bands."

Rick: "I can't wait to tell Stephen about this"

Beckett & Castle: "Do we not have a song?" and it's partner:
Beckett & Castle: "I've always loved this song"

Castle: "Principal Dunnan, you’re still here."
Dunnan: "And sadly, you have returned."
(after a very funny conversation between Rick & Kate in which he described having "detention flashbacks" that "hate wasn't a strong enough word" and figured the principal had been "put out to pasture")

Castle: "Be careful in there. Don’t anger her. We don’t know what she’s capable of."
Beckett: "You’re right. You should probably go in there with me, for protection."

Principal Dunnan: "There’s one thing I need to know Mr. Castle. It’s haunted me for years. Where did you get the cow?"
Castle: "Put it this way, sir. If you ever need one, I know a guy."
(Nathan Fillion was quoted recently as saying that he wanted Castle to "know a guy" again. Great way to bring that back)

Castle: "Kate, will you go to the dance with me?" (awwwwwww)

Kate: "Shut up and kiss me."

and the best one of the night:
Castle: "Everything I’ve ever done, every choice I’ve ever made, every terrible and wonderful thing that’s ever happened to me, it’s all led me to this moment with you."

Loved the scene with them discussing "their" song at the beginning. Loved the reasons why they both thought the song was their song.

Loved when they were questioning Jordan, heard the noise, turned their heads--only to discover it was Jordan shaking her legs! Classic.

Loved when they were questioning Lucas & he mentioned how people are gullible. The look on Rick's face as the telekinesis plot fell apart was priceless.

Loved when Ryan came back from the search of Jordan's room & him showing Espo the proof, including a copy of Carrie!

Interesting case, too. I did figure one of the friends did it. Just didn't know which one.

Loved the interaction of Rick & the principal. "You've become a writer - of sorts." "Actually, it's Mr. Castle now. You'll always be Rodgers to me", Rick's comments about the principal being able to use a computer and the principal's comeback, all great stuff.

Loved the scene of them cooking dinner. Nice to get that kind of scene in the middle of an episode instead of the beginning or end.

Of course, I loved the entire last scene - Rick asking Kate to go to the dance, putting out his hand, her putting her hand in his, them dancing, discussing the song, watching Jordan go to Lucas (that choked me up a lot) and Kate's "shut up & kiss me" and them making out like teenagers on the dance floor. Wonder if they got in trouble for that? :rotfl:

Now as to the song selection: I had thought the Irving Berlin "Always" was perfect for them, mostly because of the 'always' connection & the lyrics:

But I do love "In My Veins" a lot - it bought the perfect tone to "Always" and I bought it on iTunes the day after the episode and after watching them dance to it the other night, it works for me. I know some seem to think that every decision Andrew Marlowe makes is based on money, but I think he knows what the fans are thinking. I read an article a few years ago about how fan websites, fan fiction, tweets, etc. are all considered bu producers of movies & TV shows. And the last few episodes are very fan fiction-y. Kate telling Castle that "my mom would have loved you" - I know I've read that quite a few times. Now 'their' song is a song that many love because of it's connection to Caskett. (I'd love to see the numbers on that - I bet it was downloaded a ton after May, 2012 and again this week. I know I'd never heard of him before.)

Very sweet episode, interesting case, all in all, a very nice evening of Castle.

Hey, I resemble that remark! ;)

I don't think that EVERY decision Marlowe makes is based on money, actually far from it, but I do think that it's a priority for him. ABC wouldn't be keeping the show on the air if it wasn't profitable, and a big part of what makes it profitable is running it on a very tight budget. Dedication to the bottom line is a very important job requirement for a broadcast network showrunner.

Royalties for pop songs used in TV are a very big factor in the bottom line, and the better-known the artist, the higher the cost, unless the song is in public domain. (FTR, "Always" is not; thanks to the "Mickey Mouse" US copyright extension of 1998. Berlin was one of the founders of ASCAP, and his heirs are manic about protecting the copyright on his works.)

If you use music from a lesser-known artist who is alive, you can negotiate directly for favorable terms in return for exposure. It's a good thing all-round, really. Andrew Belle now probably has many thousands of paying fans who had never heard of him before Castle used that song.

An example of somewhere that I don't think that Marlowe will quibble on budget is the issue of the wedding venue. I think that the decision of where to stage the wedding will be completely driven by the chosen plot. They will pay what they need to pay for the right location in order to make the storyline work.
