Hi all

So a few weeks ago I asked for some advice regarding my daughter's new school starting before our trip and whether or not we should reschedule our dates. We initially decided not to, but tonight after the mandatory new student meeting we realized that we HAVE to We already have everything booked and paid for and now I have to lose $ on flights because the school seems totally unreasonable and I do not want my daughter to suffer because of it. I knew about the school's reputation of being super strict, it is part of the reason they are so successful and hard to get into, but I was NOT prepared for this. Now we have to decide if we move the trip up to the last week of July/First week of August or cancel altogether. Problem is that I am afraid of how bad the crowds will be and whether or not the experience will be worth it at that point. I can not describe how sad I am. Just wanted to vent a little lol

So sorry.....that's tough. I would try to move the trip to those earlier dates. If you can manage to get to the parks early, you won't notice the crowds as much. Plus, you will be able to book additional FP's when you use all three (depending on availability of course). Maybe that will help with crowds?

Sorry to hear about that. I would move up the dates. We use to go at that time but this will be our first year going the first week of August. I was nervous at first, but with a good touring plan we should be fine. I think it will be ok.

My goodness, you can hear the crickets chirping in here!!! Yoo hoo, is anyone else out there??? How about a QOTD? When you are on vacation, do you keep in touch with anyone "back home"? Via phone? Email? Facebook? Text? How about you? Do you abandon contact to the outside world or keep connected in some way?

Having a hard time keeping up with everything lately. Switching to a new office within the same company on Monday so the last two weeks have been training new staff and finishing old projects. Hoping things with slow down next week.


We update Facebook every day and I text my mom every few days while we're away. It eases both our minds that the other is okay.

Awe so sorry you have to change it. I think though those weeks also won't be too bad if you plan properly to enjoy the parks early.

This is exactly why I post here on the DIS! You guys get it! Thanks so much for the comfort, everyone else I told was like, "its so expensive anyways" or "see it wasn't meant to be, to go back so soon". I thank goodness gracious that the kids have no idea because they would be so sad! DD 5th Birthday is July 30th so I am thinking we can go as a birthday/Kickoff to Kindergarten trip? DS birthday is February and he always says he never gets to do anything fun in the winter but he won't care why we will be there he will be ecstatic either way! I think we can figure out a good touring strategy, you guys are right! My only issue is the flights. I got them so cheap and even though I have insurance they charge to change them The prices are so high right now! Hopefully I can find some good ones! Thanks again guys I really appreciate the optimism and positivity, sometimes a little reassurance is all a girl needs

Well, that just stinks!

I am still waiting for our girls' 2014-2015 school calendar to come out. We should be ok, but you never know....DH has already said that they will just need to miss the 1st couple of days of school if neccessary since the school board can't get a calendar out in time for people to plan around it....I mean, we are almost down to under 4 months out at this point.

I will say that we went in July in 2012 and we had an absolutely fantastic trip!!! The only negative was the tour groups, that was pretty horrid, but if you just go in the opposite direction, you should be ok.

I know! If it was the first few days we would totally do it but it would be 2 whole weeks out after 2 whole weeks in school. And the principal kept stressing how important "consistency and community building" especially for new Kindergarten students. We are still going end of August, airfare is just way too much to go earlier. Our new dates are 8/29-9/7! The plan is to have DD go for 1/2 day on 8/29 and off we go straight to the airport (what a surprise huh? !) Because of the Labor day holiday and incorporating the 2 full weekends she will be missing 4 school days instead of 9, AND we switched to YC and saved a couple of $! Still had to pay to change the fare but since its still at the price we paid for it initially its just the 75$ change fee and thats so worth it to go! It would be awesome if MNSSHP is on the 29th it will be the perfect kickoff to our trip!!! YAYYYY

This may be our last late August trip. It's not our school that's slow in showing next year's schedule, it's been out since February, it's the sports and band commitments that start with our high school that will put a damper on late summer vacations. Oh well. We did visit orlando over the holidays, and while I really enjoyed the extras and decor, I missed the really hot weather.

I guess when I vacation I don't mind that it's hot.

After a very gray day, with what the weatherman said would be distracting rain, I am so ready for sunny and hot.

And we'll be at the YC too. Maybe we'll see some DISers there. My DD's bday is the 29th, so if you see her, say HB to her. We are leaving the 31st, as we left California on her bday last year, and she's still complaining about that. So a Halloween party for her bday would be great.

When you are on vacation, do you keep in touch with anyone "back home"?

In the evening after the kids are asleep, if I'm not quite ready to sleep, I may get onto FB and post something. I may 'check in' that we're at the Poly or where ever, but mostly we are very out of touch for our trip.

This is the first trip here that may change. We're considering purchasing a cell phone so we'll have app access while int eh parks - but not sure yet. And really, even if we have it with us for access, it's not likely to change how we check in - just how we tour.

So fellow Canadians: Which device do you use and who is your service provider? Has anyone bought a SIM card from a US provider, where did you purchase?

I have an android smartphone (HTC raider) from Bell. I add a 1 month US roaming package onto my plan before I leave for my trip. It's not a huge amount of data, but gets me plenty to do little surfing, use line apps, FB, etc... I'll have to go look up the details, I don't recall everything from last time, but it was somewhere around $35 - $40.

I like having it for later at night or early morning because I'm almost always the last one asleep and the first one awake.
