Talked to someone at the runDisney booth. The decision was made "for safety" and it'll be like that tomorrow as well.

I didn't ask about the half or other race weekends, mostly because I felt like she was giving me pushback ("there were characters! They were just up high!") and I didn't want to snap at her. I just expressed that I was disappointed and that if it was "for safety" then why weren't any characters in the finish area? That stumped her.

So at least I know what to expect for tomorrow?

When the weekend is over I'm going to collect my thoughts a little and shoot them an email. I have other issues with the 5K (the "corrals," poorly lit course in the backroad areas, lack of PhotoPass Photographers - example, no one set up for pics by Mickey's Fun Wheel) - I think if they move the start out of Disneyland Park that would help. The pathways are SO narrow there that it was congested right from the start - characters or no characters.

Anecdotally, runDisney was breaking down the course in Downtown Disney way earlier than I have ever seen. We were still waiting for our coffee when I realized that the last participants had come through and they were moving the fences.

We were dead on for our time in November, so people did move through the course quicker.

I'm not a huge character person, but the course felt empty and I really noticed the smaller number of photographers. Maybe because so much time was spent weaving through backstage areas due to construction?

Hmm.

As always, I just want to thank the runners who are disappointed and angry about a decision (especially a stupid one like this) for handling it maturely and voicing their disappointment and anger appropriately.

Even though there apparently won't be any characters, I'm still excited for tomorrow's 10K. All that park time! It'll still be fun.

Wow just caught up. Welp that's no fun. At least they can't take my castle pic from me. I was really hoping for one good character pic. Willing to wait. Especially as someone who doesn't do all the races...really wanted that total rundisney experience.

DD (16) is finally home from taking her AP Euro exam. I made the right call in going for her bib last night as she is toast. Good news - it won't be that hard to convince her to go to bed early, lol.

My only thought pre-dds races is that I am glad we get the photopass downloads with our AP. I would hate to have purchased it (as they were really selling them in the expo) and then not get as many photos as possible.

I hope that everyone has an amazing 10k tomorrow! Enjoy the run and soak in the sites. Characters or no characters. Photographers in mass or far and few between all of you have trained long and hard for this so don't let the RunDisney "test" get you down -- you deserve to celebrate and enjoy yourselves! I will be there to cheer dd and all of you on.

I only ended up on this thread because of the national anthem thing. I honestly didn't even know there was a runDisney forum until a couple days ago. But you are all so inspiring! I've really enjoyed reading along the last couple days. I hope everyone has great races this weekend! Maybe one day I'll do one.

My home park (we had APs when we lived in LA)... I miss it . Especially the wine terrace in DCA.

I love Tony Baxter's description of Disneyland and WDW. He said that the Magic Kingdom is Disney on the grand scale and Disneyland is Disney on the intimate scale.

I love the majestic grandeur of Cinderella Castle and the immersion of Disney World. But I also love the charm and intimacy of Sleeping Beauty Castle. I love being able to actually walk through the castle gates at almost all times during park hours. And be sure to check out the light in the window above the fire department on Main Street USA as you enter the park. It is unique to Disneyland because that was Walt Disney's apartment. Disneyland has every bit the feel of a park built by a father and grandfather for his daughters and grandchildren. Its charm and intimacy stand alone.

Again, Tony Baxter called Disneyland the crown jewel of the Disney theme parks.

I have to wait until Sunday to run - so make sure to warm up the course for me! I didn't realize they gave you C2C wrist bands when you get the special medals - so now I get to run errands around town tomorrow with a little bit of pixie dust. I feel so much more excited for this race than I was for the three races at princess!

DH and I finally made it. We left home at 4am eastern time this morning and got to our hotel at 3:30pm local time. We are at PP and they upgraded us to a theme park view. I must have mentioned that we are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary when I booked the room because we came back this evening to turndown service with chocolate and rose pedals on the bed.

As for the character controversy, I can understand why people are upset but I never manage to stop for pictures anyway. I do think that DL should find a way to do character photos before and after the race like WDW does though.

At Light Side this year, and I can't remember what race is was after (DH and DS did the 5K, I did the 10 and Half, and I'm pretty slow and very slow in leaving, so it really could have been any of them), I saw the last people go through the DTD area where I was standing, and the instant they passed by they were breaking it down. Must feel weird to have a course disappearing behind you!
