Official 2017 Star Wars - Light Side Half Marathon Weekend (Jan 12th - 15th, 2017)

Thanks for the tip about the video. It was actually really cool to see them - looks like the Rebel medal is pretty big.

I managed to do 4 miles w/o IT band pain last night. I did have my knee band on though so its not a true gauge of how its doing but it does show me how far I can go if I have to!

We've pulled the plug on our RnR Vancouver trip so most likely SW will be my next half. Still optimistic that I have enough time to heal and do well!

That's great news!! Keep on healing!

Better to wait and heal than to push yourself and do more damage. Looks like it's going to be a cold, rainy race and not too much fun. Not looking forward to the weekend - must be because it's "lucky" 13 towards RNR Hall of Fame!

I'm bummed I wont get to see you! But I know you're gonna do great on the 10K! Is your plan still to PR that one?

Now that we're a month or so into training, how's everyone coming along?

I'm where I should be. Despite the last 2 weeks being extremely busy at work, I managed to fit my training runs without having to switch out long runs for short runs, so that's good. I also managed to successfully persuade my little sister to sign up for the 1/2. I had her ready for the Rebel Challenge, but the travel agent she called didn't have bibs available for the challenge, so she signed up for the 1/2.

She's much faster than me, but it's been so long since her last 1/2 that she may well be in the last corral. We have an understanding that she can take off when she wants to and that I probably won't move back to her corral if we're not in the same corral.

Things have been good this week. I ran 5 miles Monday night and it went better than I expected. Wednesday morning on the treadmill was also encouraging. I'm a little behind where I should be on the long runs - I'm following Galloway's time improvement plan - but I am on pace for his beginner plan so we'll call it good. This weekend my sister and I will do our 800 repeats at the track since I'll be visiting her. It will be fun to run with a partner. Plus, we really need to talk about our costumes. We haven't decided on anything yet. :hourglass

I think I need less running and more relaxing! :rotfl:

RNR Vancouver 10K and Half this weekend, RNR Los Angeles next weekend, and then in two more weeks the Avengers 10K, followed by RNR Vegas 5K that evening and the RNR Vegas Half Marathon that night. Looking forward to a 3 week break before the RNR San Antonio 10K and Half weekend the first weekend of December.

I'm looking forward to taking it easy after our December Disney trip through the holidays and doing light 5K training runs and picking it up again in January before the 10K/Half for star wars :thumbsup2

@courtneybeth your schedule is crazy! You're amazing! Can't wait to hear how this weekend goes for you.

Dealing with my IT band issue. Haven't tested it past 4 miles. I'm going to try switching over to Galloways rebel challenge plan now. I'm gonna do 4 with DD on Sunday. She just doesn't know it yet lol. I'm gonna try doing 30:30 intervals with her as I think 1:1 min would be too long. We'll see how she does. Next week calls for 8 and then 7 the week after. I'll try to do the 8 but if the IT band objects I'll have to drop it down. I need to make another ART appt before then I think.

Good morning All I am new to this whole "run Disney" thing. I am doing the 5k light side as an inaugural event. Woot!!
So we will obviously be done by 6am at the latest. Does Disney do anything after the event or am I safe to make some breakfast plans?

I've never done a disney 5k so I can't say for sure but I'd assume you're safe to make breakfast plans. After the Halfs and 10k I've never been tempted to hang out very long. Usually I just grab my food box, stretch out really quick and then head back to my hotel.

Did 4 miles with DD yesterday. It was a slow for miles but we both got them done! It was her first training run for the 10k so I was proud of her for sticking with it! I think we have 8 on the RC training schedule this weekend. Fingers crossed my IT band lets me do all 8!

We had an enjoyable Surf's Up breakfast after the 10K last year. We didn't feel any compulsion to stay around the finish area too long.

A few park touring questions:

What are the typical hours for race weekend (Saturday, Sunday?) Am I safe in assuming there won't be Extra Magic Hours or Magic Morning offered?

We are just running the 10k. Let's say you are starting in a later corral and don't plan on stopping for pictures, what time would you say you are done by and heading back for the hotel? Thinking about making concrete breakfast plans since we're heading down with another family.

Don't plan on magic morning that weekend because of the race.

I'm not sure what times the park opens on race weekend since I've been running both race weekends, but I believe they both stay open until midnight or maybe 11:00pm. Again in both cases, I've been asleep by then.

I've had breakfast reservations around 10:30 the past 2 years and made it just fine starting in the second to last corral.

Looking at old programs it looks like last year on Saturday and Sunday Disneyland was open 9:00am-midnight and DCA was open 10:00am-8:00pm. The prior year, both parks opened at 9:00am.

If you're starting in the last corral, I would assume that you'll start within 30 minutes of the official start time. Then figure in your 10k pace, add some time for crowding issues and any selfies you may stop and take and that should give you a pretty good estimate of when you'll finish. Getting through the finishers chute doesn't take more than 5 minutes, unless you stop for an official photo and sometimes that takes a few more minutes. I find my disney 10k times to be consistently 10-15 minutes slower than my normal 10k time. However, I purposely do a lot of walking during the 10k cause I save my legs for the Half.

Backing this up for sure. My Disneyland 10K time was about 7 minutes slower than my previous 10K time due to crowding in some narrow areas. People will randomly stop in front of you .. or in my case, literally run into me because she missed the photo stop and had to turn around. ***!

My running schedule is all messed up because of a new job I started. I need to become a morning runner I guess. But now that I'm barely running, even my weekend runs have suffered. *sigh* I need to try and get back into the habit ...

Thanks for the info!

I was looking through the Superheroes event guide and saw that layered costumes (eg Jedi robes) are not allowed. I'm toying with the idea of dressing up like Rey. Do you think this is a no-no?

Also, do most people just use safety pins to pin their bibs? Is there a better way?
