Official 2017 D23 Expo Thread

Or maybe you think they're equal distant while one is 4x further? Or maybe you have to have a contrarian view at all times?

No one knows what it's gunna look like when this thing is built. My guess is Illuminations 2.0 will be outstanding from there. You can disagree, it it certainly is closer.

There's already been several versions of illuminations...maybe you don't feel like actually looking at the design or what is there?

And maybe you make too many excuses for the masters?

This started because you indicated: "I can't see mgm from there"...that is patently wrong.

I know I'm old news now that all the parks stuff is out...but in case anyone cares about my day...

In line for live action at 3 am. Surprise, they loaded us weird and my section almost didn't get in even though we had people who'd been there at midnight. It was close and people almost rioted, seriously.

Best part was Mary Poppins, the Lion King opening sequence, the Dumbo maquette and the Avengers.

Got a book signed by Marty Sklar. Met 3 parks artists. Saw the POTC archives. Met Moana, which I was really looking forward to but it was a mess. We had a vinyl record of the soundtrack for her to sign. When we bought it we were told if we paid $10 for a lithograph she would sign both. When we got to the front of the line they were trying to push people through so they could let standby in. They told us we could not have the litho signed and said no pictures. We were literally pushed up to her and then shoved away, I set the litho on the table and she did sign it. From the 5 seconds i saw her she was so sweet. It was not her fault. I was pretty upset, I understand wanting to let more people meet her but I got to say maybe one word before I was being pushed away. She barely got to sign my stuff. I got a papercut from the line handler shoving my litho at me. It kind of put a damper on my day.

We saw the droid trundling around the SW pavilion. We got some freebies at Disney animation and Pixar pavilion. Sunglasses, lithos, a pixar lanyard, pins, a Coco guitar pick. They were constantly handing stuff out so we hung out a while.

We stuffed some bags for kids at hospitals, they had a booth set up.

We saw the Kiss Goodnight panel...Richard Sherman played Supercalifraigilistic, Feed the Birds and the Kiss Goodnight. I feel like my life is complete.

Afterwards we saw Ben Schwartz, a Duck Tales voice and Parks and Rec star and the voice of BB8. He took a selfie with me and did the 'duck tales, woooo'.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I really wanted to go to this event but I am glad that I didn't. I hope that you and others share your experiences with the company and hopefully they will either limit admission or be equipped to handle the crowds next time. It's tough to hold a company that large to a higher standard though, there is always someone else with $$ to take your place. Still disappointing.

Hope tomorrow goes great for you!

That definitely explains it. True to the original vision and won't bore the kids. I want some of whatever was in the air at that presentation.
It's a comic book convention and Disney makes a ton of money off it and makes everyone book more travel, buy more stuff, watch more movies, etc.

...I try to take it with a grain of salt for what it is...

Basically everyone called this a D23 EVENT!
Since this returned tonight (TWO DAYS EARLY) and everyone who was at the Disney Parks D23 Panel got front row tickets to see it tonight, I thought it would go well with this thread. <3
What do you all think of the new Fantasmic? I for one LOVE IT! Alot of the old mixed in with some new! =D

Based on this image, am I the only one seeing a hedge maze to the left?

THis is the only one I have seen so far:

So here's my breakdown / opinion.

DHS:
Date for Toy story no surprise
GMR to Mickey Mouse - I don't mind this because I think the GMR stinks, but I will miss the CONCEPT of a GMR. People seem worried this is a "kiddie" ride, but I don't think it's the case. I think it will be family friendly, but it sounds like a fun concept if they pull off the uniqueness of it.
Star Wars land - nothing new here except a name Galaxy's Edge is just fine.

Epcot:
All good - new spine, Rat in France, new movie in China, GotG in Energy. I won't miss Ellen much, it's sort of a neat ride, but way too long.
The new Space Restaurant and second Mission for M:S was a neat surprise. I would almost guarantee that this goes into Wonders of Life. The domed area seems perfect for the concept. Will be interesting to see what happens to the festival center for F&W though - they'll need to locate it somewhere else - Odyssey? My guess is most of this stuff won't be done by 2019, more like 2020.

My biggest disappointment missing from the announcements is not a new country - they said more to come after all about WS - but that still no love for Imagination Pavilion, which is probably the area most in need of some love before this announcement, and now CLEARLY the most in need.

MK:
Tron - YES! All for this, even though MK is turning into a roller coaster park. The Theater is interesting, wonder why they aren't saying what's going there. I don't think Frozen, since that is already in DHS. Could see some sort of other stage musical going there - maybe bring the DCA version of Aladdin? I'm betting that these don't break ground for at least a year, and are both targeted for 2021.

Hotels:
Those of us on the DVC boards knew that the DVC hotel was happening since January at least. It's already under construction. There was much argument about whether it would be a moderate, but I argued that no way they do that, so proven right. The key is the views of Illuminations and the gondolas, which will make travel to DHS and Epcot very fast. Expect all this in place by 2019 for Star Wars opening. Since I won't spend money for DVC direct, the best I can hope for is we have a trip right around the time they start to open it up.

The Star Wars hotel will more than likely be near DHS. I could see it being attached to Galaxy's Edge, where you would enter through the land, and then part of your interactive experience would be part of the land as well. I could see this being in place for 2019 Star Wars opening. They will charge a fortune and make a fortune on this thing. (I think there's a pretty good chance I do it, and do it early. I'm expecting prices to start high and then go higher.

A seventh DCL ship has no effect on me. Good for them, but the real risk there is if there's ever a serious economic slowdown their going to have an awful hard time filling all these ships.

DCA - I think Californians would be a bit disappointed in the announcements here. A Halloween overlay of Carsland is neat, but the Pixar Pier is the 3rd rethemeing of this area. (And how does Little Mermaid and Goofy's Skycoaster fit in with this?) The Marvel stuff was nice, but it was much too vague. Not sure if they were implying that Paint the Night means that MSEP is sticking around, but maybe it does.

That's all my thoughts for now. Great that there were so many WDW announcements! Thanks everyone for the fun day.

Wait what is happening to Paradise Pier? Pixar Pier? What about screaming and the swings? Also is pixar code for Toy Story? The Pier is one of my favorite areas in all Disney parks and i really hope they don't ruin it...

I'm a little confused by the new theater that was announced for Magic Kingdom. Supposedly it will be on/adjacent to Main Street, but I'm confused about what that means and where it will be. I know I missed 90% of the posts today, but does anyone have info on where this will be and what it is replacing?

I'm just catching up to the announcements, so far, I think a lot of good stuff.

I'm bummed about no new country pavilion though. They have space there. Spain, Russia, Brazil. All good and exotic options. Also, fix the US one because it's garbage and have a more eclectic gastronomy section there as opposed to hot dogs and burgers, that's embarrassing. LA, HI, TX, S. CA, S. FL, NY, IL, PR cuisine to show variety in geology, food, and culture.

Very excited for WDW. I have been pestering my husband all evening about going for the 50th Anniversary. For the Live Action panel, I am not seeing Aladdin. I have not liked Will Smith since Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Not on board with Mary Poppins 2. Looking forward to the Nutcracker. I love Misty Copeland. Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren is just an added bonus.

Isn't the Disney Riviera going to be extremely visible behind World Showcase? Even worse than the gondolas being visible behind France..
Yes, I don't know about extremely visible, but definitely visible. And the gondolas will NOT be visible behind France, but certainly when you are crossing between England and France you will see them.

Last question for today: so I take it Caribbean beach isn't going to recover it's huge guest room count? Like they officially downsized the resort?

Yes, CBR is losing about 600 rooms. (I calculated the exact number once - 9 buildings are gone times however many rooms are in each building, something like 64.) Still be around 1500 rooms, so still pretty big. They had previously announced the re-do of Port Royale. With the new gondola, you can bet while this resort won't be "Deluxe" it will be priced higher than Port Orleans and Riverside and Coronado - I would expect a 10-20% premium, YMMV if you think it's worth that for a gondola. Oh, and same goes for Pop Century. AoA is already pretty pricey, so probably won't see that go up too much.

They specifically referred to the new Mickey ride as "e ticket" in the presentation.

People get confused what an E-ticket ride actually is. The original E Ticket rides included Hall of Presidents and Country Bear Jamboree. But if we take "e Ticket" to equal "headliner", I think that Tron, GotG and Mickey ride would all qualify. Ratatouille maybe not, but it could well be. It will be the addition FINALLY of a trackless ride system in the parks. (Though Mickey and SW Battle ride are using them also.) So I think the argument could be made. I would agree that Frozen isn't an E and TSMM shouldn't be but in fact is due to popularity. Mine Train is an E though, no doubt.

We got an amazing amount of news. Disney World's is feeling the pressure from UOR. Let's realize we are getting five new rides by the end of 2019 and three more in that time. We have lost a ton of things to get these new additions. What a time to be alive. All I can hope is that they keep investing in the Parks long term because there's so much more to work on.

God forbid I don't want to have to mortgage my house to afford a Disney vacation in the future.

good news... you don't have to!

Before you throw out snarky comments, keep this in mind. Disney wants to make money. If attendance is down, due to higher ticket prices, Disney isn't going to just settle for what they get, they will raise prices to make up for lost revenue. So the folks that remain after the fella doesn't go because he doesn't want to mortgage his house will be paying even more.
