Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

Powerade - sometimes they have choices but mostly it's the green stuff (lemon-lime or something). Normally at the finish they'll have red, blue or green.
No bars.
Clif gels at mile 9ish.

I would HIGHLY recommend starting to figure out what works best for you and planning on carrying it with you during the race.

I already am. I mention the stuff I've tried or have lined up to try a few posts up; but I wanted to make sure I've tried whatever is on the course as well. Always have a back up plan. You may run out, may forget your stuff, etc.

I second the idea of trying out various fueling options early, particularly if you have a sensitive digestive system. My first sprint triathlon I never tried fuel ahead. Ate Gu on the bike and took everything I had not to vomit. It was awful, and I still had to run! So, learning from that, when I trained for my first half I actually tried fuels very slowly and deliberately. First, at home after a run if have a bit to test the taste and watch for any bad reaction. Then when I found ones I liked I took them to the gym and tried them on the treadmill. If that worked I gave them a go on the road. I had a clear winner. I am a super salty sweater, as in I come home from every run caked in white salt residue. So, to make sure I replace the lost sodium I use the Clif Shot blocks with 3 times the regular sodium. Bonus is they are margarita flavored;)

I actually have cliff shot blocks in line to start testing now that I'm in my longer distances because I'm like you- super salty sweater. If left to dry without rinsing, my bondi band, sports bra, etc would have huge rings of white where I had sweated.

Up above I mentioned the stuff I've tried this far- but I'm like you, I don't like Gu as much as blocks. I can handle it GI wise, and flavor wise, but the consistency for me is just !Blech! so I have been leaning towards using beans/blocks for fueling.

SO JEALOUS! I have friends on FB that got their shirts today. Looks like the PHM shirts went out first.

I want my GSC shirt now!!

Do you have to order the training shirts or are they sent out because we're registered? I wouldn't mind having a nice 'training for' shirt. Course right now I'm in training for the W/D, so....

At this point with the 2016 PHM being my 5th in a row (6th rD race so far), I'm actually starting to like the Powerade they serve on the course, lol. I remember hating it my first year, but it's grown on me, and I'm starting to look forward to it. Haha!

Re: on-course nutrition - yes, they serve Clif shots gels around mile 9, but it's not at a water station. I always wind up hanging on to mine until the next water station so that I can have some hydration with my gel (if I choose to take one). I remember them serving espresso, lemon lime, and raspberry this year (I took a raspberry one and didn't finish it, it was just too much and I prefer Sport Beans). Speaking of Sport Beans, the reason I like them so much is not just because they're easy to digest and several flavors have caffeine, but the pouch is also resealable. I can take a few, pop them in my mouth, reseal and stow it away in my SPIBelt.

And while they don't offer bars during the race, they usually have a mini Luna bar in the post-race snack packs, so I usually have one from the 5K that I can bring with me for the other races if I need it (I wound up eating mine pre-PHM this year).

So the powerade, someone else mentioned they didn't think you could get it, but our WM and grocery stores do have powered powerade (it's red though, not green) and it has real sugar in it. Something about ions on the front, black container. I'm wondering if this is similar to what's on the course. This is what I started using in my recovery shakes when I first began training earlier this year. Now that I'm up past six miles for long runs, I will begin to mix it in (maybe extra diluted to start) in my water too. I'm a super salt loser, so I want to make sure I don't run into salt/electrolyte issues. I just like to make sure I've tried what's going to be on course because you never know. I'd rather be able to use it if I need it than need it and can't use it because I haven't tried it.

I've tried raspberry and espresso Gu, and Cliff gel. I like both. But definitely need water nearby with them. And I too prefer beans/blocks because the package is easier to store in my waist belt or sparkle skirt short pockets. Gu, I opened one towards the end of my 10k, but didn't finish it. Put it in my waist belt and forgot about it. Sticky mess when I sat down after the race. lol

What are the top five merchandise items you're looking forward to getting at the expo?

Me, I'm looking forward to a D&B bag. For years (some definately more than others though lol) I've coveted the Princess and Tink patterns and I'm happy to be able to *hopefullly* snag one at each. Also, the NB's. Then some tech shirts. Maybe a wine glass.

What about you guys?

Hmm...

1. "I Did It" shirt, not sure for which race(s) yet
2. Official race pins
3. Glass Slipper Challenge medal pin for coast-to-coast medal ribbon :)

Going to TRY to resist the Dooney. I need another D&B like I need a hole in my head.

This is me too. But they're so tempting. I really like the look of the Food and Wine bag (not a race bag), so there's $200-some-odd dollars, so I'm really going to have to be choosy at the Expos this year. I can't possibly buy a bag at each race. Can I? :scratchin

At Princess, I really want an I Did It shirt and probably a mug.

I saw that Food & Wine bag! Really cute.

I just got a DCL Dooney and paid for someone to pick up one of the totes for me from D23...and I've pre-paid for a Disneyland Half Dooney. And I already had a few at home, so once I pick up my Dooney at DL I am officially cutting myself off unless I sell one. Seriously, I have issues.

Thanks for the idea for the Shot Bloks with the extra sodium! I come back coated from any run longer than about 45min with a salty residue too.

When I was starting to increase my mileage training for GSC 2014 I was feeling really sick after every long run, even though I knew I hydrated well and ate an appropriate amount of energy foods. It was weird because I felt fine during the run, and for 30 minutes after, but then I would feel sicker and sicker over the next few hours, unable to eat due to nausea and stomach cramping. I mentioned the problem to someone more experienced who said it might be sodium related. Sure enough, first long run with the extra sodium - no longer felt sick after.

I will be on a mission to get a Tervis Tumbler. I always go on Thursday because I have 5k and GSC bibs to get for me and the family. They've never had them! I've often wondered if they restock later and I could find them if I go back. I have considered getting the pre-purchase pack this year that has the Tervis, but I am not interested in either of the other options. Seems like a waste. Other than that perhaps a wine glass. I got the I did it shirt (GSC) last year and I never wear it. It has a lot of glitter and every time I go to wear it I decide its a bit much for my gym;) I may consider shoes depending on any new designs that may or may not be released.

Training shirts were sold through Disney Store online and the orders are now done.

Relying on past conversations online with those who volunteer and were at the powerade stations mixing it tells me that it's not the fancy stuff with ions on the packaging.

I have enough bathroom stops during events so unless I 100% know what an item is and how I respond to it, I cannot take it. Sad to be so stupidly sensitive. Oh well! The clif stuff and sports beans work well for me! I tried stingers and other things along the same idea but they didn't work as well for me. :)

I can never force myself to sell any of mine. They just pile up in their blue dustcover bags. :rolleyes1 But I totally get your rationale. You've got DCL, D23, DL Half. It's a collection, people. There could be worse things (although cheaper) to collect.

That's great that you got it figured out and can pass the info along, I appreciate it! I need to remember to pack some facial wipes for post-race. Vanity? Check.

I must've missed this- as I'm going to run W/D so I better get to googling. lmao
I also forgot the 'I did it' shirts. I will probably grab one or two of those.

ARGH! Tervis Tumbler. Just added to my list of things I really shouldn't be buying but will ;)
I have such a collection of those things but I love love love them.

I haven't run long enough (ie distance on my long runs) yet to really think that I've lost electrolytes, but this last run, I don't know if it was the combo of going 8 miles and then doing so in the heat, or what, but afterwards I was drained. Not sick like you describe, but I could have slept the whole rest of the day and night after. And that's not usually me. Normally, I can go out and do my errands etc after a long run and not even feel it. But not this one.

I tend to leave the salt slick behind in my work out wear, so I suspect that I'm a little saltier sweater.

Drat. Best laid plans and all. lol

No, I feel you, when you know you're a sensitive tummy- better not to risk it. And honestly, even though I have the GI system of steel, on race day- I wouldn't be risking it either.

@Ariel484 Thanks!
All I was getting on google was last years design, which I think I liked better. That's okay though- leaves more money for other goodies :D

OMG! Must have the figment coffee mug and the tervis tumbler they show!

In all seriousness, they do seem to retain their value...sometimes even go up in value if they're a retired or limited-edition print. One of them that I have (from 2013 Marathon Weekend) is pretty highly coveted by collectors, apparently. I'll never sell that one though. :lovestruc

Okay...so I liked last year's design as well and did get a crossbody. But then I read that people were having horrible luck with the corners of the bags chipping/flaking, so it stayed in my closet unused because I was too afraid to carry it. Unacceptable for such an expensive bag, so I ended up selling mine. :confused3

Notice the bags in the above pictures have leather corners...the bags from last year didn't have those. That's the difference.

^^ yes, that's the one that I had. It doesn't have leather corners like this year's bags do in the picture upthread.

I have considered getting the pre-purchase pack this year that has the Tervis

Have they told us it's Tervis, or just that it's a tumbler?

WDW has been known to have fake Tervis around.

Even then one in that F&W picture I would be making SURE of before buying.
