Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

Thanks everyone for your replies! JG's program always starts you off with a 3 minute walk to warm up so I usually just do that. Also with a 3 minute walk to cool down. Just thinking about other ways as well! Otherwise I would probably be like everyone else and not do too much!
 
I loooove all of these costume ideas! Dreaming of putting together a princess running costume is half of the fun of planning this race! What is your opinion on dressing as princesses that obviously look so different than you (ie hair and/or skin color)? I've started to collect ideas for Tiana and Mulan as they are two of my favorite characters, but I don't want to make some kind of faux pas? :confused3


I say, wear the costume you want to wear!!!
 
For those of you flying Southwest I say " thanks" as DH is a pilot for SW and your flying keeps him employed . PHM and Daytona are indeed the same weekend as well as several states having midwinter breaks hence higher airfares much like it is around Thanksgiving and Christmas. We do buy tickets on our own airline during busy times as I have this lingering fear of getting kicked off a plane and/or sitting around an airport all day long waiting for an open seat..

And since February can bring winter storms....if you can, try and arrive a couple days before your race as flights can get cancelled due to bad weather and then the backups occur. Hope this helps my fellow princesses!

I think the Princesses are universal and shouldn't be restricted to hair color/skin color. I say go for it!

I think that we don't need to worry about that sort of thing.

This is what I figured. I obviously don't think it's a big deal (which is why I may dress as Tiana or Mulan), but wanted to make sure! Thanks for the encouragement everyone!
 
I just started training this week. It's been fun so far! I've been using JG's 5k app mixed in with walking to get started. It's fun to dodge automatic water sprinklers early in the morning....

For those of you that have run for awhile, what's the best way to get loose and warm up before a run? I'm still trying to find a warm up routine to use in the morning.

Hi Everyone!

My heart has finally slowed down and I've stopped shaking from registration. Was that really just two days ago?!? I totally jokingly asking hubby if he wanted to do the Princess Half Marathon with me next year (2015 Princess Half Marathon was my first race ever !) and he said sure. So I pushed a little bit more and asked about doing the Glass Slipper Challenge, and got another yes! I really wanted to try for the triple crown but we entered the kids in the kids races on Friday so I decided the morning should focus on them and not me getting another metal!

I'm still in shock that we are going!!! We just started talking about this last week. And then on Tuesday at 11am I went to use the Internet at home to look up some race info and it didn't work. Tried resetting it, didn't work. It's now 11:15 and we live 35 minutes from town (I was afraid to use my phone because reception is spotty sometimes). I made it Panera at 11:50 and couldn't get Active or rundisney to work. Luckily I checked here and saw other people were having trouble, it wasn't just me. So THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! To everyone who posted direct links! It was a life saver! Oh yeah, and my active account didn't recognize my password! I was definitely freaking out! But happy to say I was able to register myself, my husband in the GSC and our girls in kids races!

Now to book flights and figure out costumes!

@lauriko I think one thing you can take away from the warm-up discussion is that different things work for different people!* It might take a little bit of trial and error but I am sure you will find what works for you...that's part of what training is about.


*And I don't mean that with just warm-ups...also applies to nutrition before/during your run, what training plan you use, what run:walk ratio you use if you use one at all, what kind of cross training you do, etc. I have come to realize that running is not a one-size-fits-all sport, so it just may take you a bit to figure out what works best for you and your mind/body. :)

Fully agree. We are all an experiment of one. What works for me may or may not work for anyone else.

I bought a pair called MPOW Cheetah on Amazon. They were really inexpensive but have fantastic sound and range. Super comfortable too. Love them!

Alas due to my budget I had to pass on 2016 but I'll be back for 2017. Please promise you'll post those amazing back door links at this time next year!

I saw this question asked elsewhere so I can't take credit for it, but being a newbie I'd really like some more info on it so I bring it to all you very knowledgeable people. How does the sale of New Balance shoes work? This person mentioned about putting yourself in a virtual queue in the morning? Can someone explain this process? Also, what other things are there virtual queues for as far as the Expo? If I'm traveling the morning of the day I plan on the Expo, might I be out of luck not knowing when I'll actually get to the Expo?
You can register for the New Balance queue in the morning - I believe it began at 6:00a. You'll need your bib# and you can choose a time. You also need to put in which style of shoe and the approximate size.

I had made the mistake of attempting to register for the queue via wifi at AoA and lost connection before my registration was confirmed. No timeslots were available when I tried again. So, we drove to WWoS and signed up for a time. We picked up our packets, shopped, and then saw that some of the New Balance employees were standing around. We went to the check-in area and said we had a time slot for an hour later - no problem at all. We were immediately assisted!

You can purchase two pairs of shoes. CM friend bought the Sorcerer Mickey shoes for herself and a friend - in kids' sizes so they saved money!:)
 
Can anyone give me info about the kids races? My daughter is signed up for the 100m dash Friday, but I can't find times or anything anywhere!
 
Ok, I talked to dbf last night, and we've decided on Wreck It Ralph & Vanellope Von Schweetz for the 5k.


For dbf, he's not big into over-the-top costumes (for the 5K last year, we were The Incredibles, and he simply wore a red Incredibles shirt with his running pants, rather than the full-on muscly costume seen in Halloween stores). I'm thinking something like this for him:
