Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

Speaking of.......my grandmother is really in a bad way with Alzheimers and Dementia. She is currently in the hospital. They don't know if she will make it past Christmas. She is in the late stages and having recurring problems swallowing. She has lost about 20 pounds in the last month because she can't eat well....but as far as I know feeding tube is not an option(because of her health) and my granddad is against a live in helper because he still has all of his faculties. My dad takes care of her pretty much all the time. I love my grandmother but have accepted that she will be passing probably sooner rather than later. I know this is a personal question but I am trying to go ahead and think about what I should do if she happens to pass sometime around marathon weekend. Does anyone have experience or suggestions? My feelings won't be hurt. Just looking for some insight. I guess my question is would you skip marathon weekend if a loved ones funeral ended up being scheduled then? I had to sound selfish and petty.....but we have rented dvc points that are nonrefundable....paid for the dining plan (not sure if it is refundable...bought it through dvc)....paid for tickets (which could be used at another time).....plus I have been telling my kids that we are going and they are excited. I know there will probably be family members that would just hate me if I didn't go.....but it isn't that I didn't/don't love her. I started grieving the loss of my grandmother years ago and have accepted it.........Thoughts?

Sorry to hear about your grandmother. I hope you don't have to make the decision about attending her funeral or going to marathon weekend. Personally, I'd skip the funeral and go to Disney, primarily because of your children. Dragging them to a funeral, even if they knew and loved their great-grandmother well, is not going to be an enjoyable experience for them. I know, funerals and memorial services aren't generally supposed to be fun, but they're even worse for kids, who often don't really understand why they're there. I think sitting them down and explaining to them why you are choosing to go to Disney with them, should it come to that, is a better option than explaining to them why you're taking them away from Disney to go to a funeral.

The post about the fear of not getting in on Friday caused me to go back and find Bavaria's awesome thread about travel during the winter!

It's here.

Especially if you're a relatively new flyer, if you've never flown during winter, if your area is prone to storms, etc, give it a read. Good stuff.

Keep an eye on weather, on airline websites, on airPORT websites, on traffic revisions and construction in your area, and outside. Be prepared! Be prepared to leave early if something is about to happen weatherwise and they start letting people rearrange travel for no fee.

This was us for the PHM! We were supposed to fly down on Thursday. Weather was looking not-so-good. On Wednesday, I watched the Southwest website until the weather advisory appeared, offering the opportunity to change flights at no extra charge. I was able to call and change our Thursday morning flight to Wednesday afternoon (leaving four hours later!) which was fortunate because Southwest ended up canceling several Thursday morning flights.

Ok....tell me what degree of crazy this is:

Would it be completely, utterly insane to do 20 miles on a treadmill in the warmth and comfort of my basement? Has anybody ever done that long on a treadmill? Beyond the boredom of the slowly passing miles, is there risk of injury? Would it be better than being out in the rain?

I did an ok 19 outside, but really want a 20 under my belt before race day. I know it is not much difference physically, but it's a big difference for me mentally.

Am I just out of my mind and I should haul my butt out into the rain?

All opinions welcome! Thanks!

In addition to short runs, I've done a 20-miler, a 21-miler and a ton of 10-milers on the treadmill in my basement. It's just too cold outside. I run outside in more mild weather. But inside, I can mimic course support, like the water and food stations. I've found that chrome casting you tube videos of Disney races is really helpful. Thanks to Lee Hoedl for his "All Along the Course" videos!

For those of you that check bags or have people meeting you post race, what's something you like to have after a race?

For me it's either flip flops or sandals. Particularly after the Marathon, the first thing I want to do after I grab my food box is take my shoes off. I'm fortunate because someone usually meets me at the finish with them. ( I also love Chocolate milk after a race, but runDisney doesn't provide that)

I will be packing shelf safe chocolate milk in my checked bag, along with some croc slides, a change of shorts, and some wet wipes. Shelf safe chocolate milk is usually available at your local supermarket.

Oh my...the idea of changing to a flight leaving 4 hours from that moment...I'm fainting here. So glad you were able to do it. I think I'm going to pack right now, just in case we have to leave early. Heck, we're leaving on a Monday and DH is off work and home the whole weekend... OK maybe I'll pack 100% on, hmm the 2nd. That way we're able to leave at a moment's notice.

Wow, what a neat idea to make the dreadmill less dreadful.

I trained 100% for TOT 2013 on the treadmill, at an incline (and apparently going at a faster foot pace than the belt was moving me, which I figured out by matching the pace of people next to me and noticing that they were at 8 while I was at, say, 4 speed), and it was all fine fine FINE until my 11 mile run pre-taper. By the end of it I broke up with the treadmill.

Alas, DS is too young to be on his own alone, DH travels a lot, we homeschool and don't have babysitters or sane/healthy family nearby, and I don't feel comfy leaving him at the Y so I can go running alone in a sketchy neighborhood, so let's just say that my training since then has been rather, hmm, deficient. But watching a Disney run might just be fun. If only I had time to redo the last 6 months of "training" (and by training I mean every so often doing a Half, and doing it slower than the last time, with a few shorter runs here and there, along with lots of Spin, yoga, and pilates...yeah, 'cuz that's "training for a Half"...)

So glad I'm moving to mainly 10Ks after this one. :upsidedow

Ok....tell me what degree of crazy this is:

The situation: I have the start of a sore throat. The forecast for tomorrow is 40 degrees and constant rain/mist. This is literally the last day I can do my 20-miler before the start of holiday travel. It is tomorrow or never, and I am almost sick thinking about being out in the cold and wet for so long.

Once upon a time I did all my training runs on a treadmill. I did a all of my long runs on it. Even 20 miles. Normally I watched food network or Gilmore Girls seasons to pass the time. I hated being outside walk/running. For the last few years though I have gradually eliminated treadmill runs. In fact I haven't gotten on a treadmill this year until yesterday. Too bad I had to break the streak. All my other runs this year have been outdoors but yesterday I wasn't able to coordinate a run with others (or one during daylight for myself because my husband is on call) so I went to ymca at 4:30 and did my miles. I hated every minute of it, haha. But you got to do what you got to do. Find you something on Netflix and watch all the seasons. Good luck to you!! Praying you don't develop any sort of cold!!

I'm in your camp...I load some movies on to my tablet and watch them during my run on the treadmill. I use bluetooth headphones so I won't have any cord mishaps (which I know 100% would happen). It's about the only way I can tolerate a treadmill for any amount over an hour.

Because of the noise, though, I've found out I need to watch a movie I've already watched in the past. The headphone volume will only go so high and I do miss out on some of the softer dialogue.

If I had a treadmill at home - that wouldn't be a problem! Maybe someday.

As much as it sucks, the 'mill might be your best option if you MUST get the 20-miler in (you probably don't need to BTW, but I understand the mental hurdle, trust me!). I was forced to the treadmill for Goofy training a few times last December as we had blizzards here every other day and my wife wouldn't let me do a long run outside (she was the smart one, I was the idiot who thought it would be alright). The most I did was 20 miles on the treadmill...it wasn't fun, but there were advantages such as unlimited water, bathrooms whenever you needed them and Netflix. Make the most of it and enjoy as best you can!

Someone posted on fb that runner tracking was now available, but I cant find it on rundisney's website. Anyone have the link to it? Thanks!

I have done almost all of my miles on the treadmill for three years. Originally it was because of embarrassment/self-consciousness but now it is just because I am used to it

I watch football (soccer) matches on Saturday and Sunday mornings for my long runs and feel great knowing that by the time the match is over I have run longer than the world class athletes competing in front of me (it is not uncommon for broadcasts to show km traveled when players are subbed off).

I know that is crazy, I'm fine with that. I figure I am going to be watching the matches anyway, might as well not sit on my butt while doing it. Plus, it make training easy to schedule.

AND THE HAY IS IN THE BARN!!!!

Thanks everybody for the encouragement about the treadmill. On this cold, rainy day, it was definitely the right choice. Want to know how tired I was? I decided to watch an action movie to keep my mind going. I chose White House Down. Not a prime example of quality filmmaking, but exciting. Here's how I know I was reaching my limits: I actually teared up at the end. This is a profoundly dumb movie, so I must have been very, very, very short on brain waves by the end!

If anybody still has a long one to go, good luck! I read an encouragement on a website about long runs that said, "Pull that (expletive deleted that starts with an s) like a bandaid and get it done!"

Look out, Mickey Mouse! I'm comin' for ya!

I just noticed now that there is an "Official RunDisney Merchandise" setup in both the Field House and Jostens Center. That wasn't the case last year, was it?

If they are both equal, that should really help with the crowding/availability of stuff I hope!

Nice work, good choice...in running on the treadmill that is, not your choice in movies ;)

It feels good to get rid of that band aid, eh?

Weather "improving" in my opinion:

It's been like that at least the last two years (I've only been there the past two years). The merch store where one picks up the bib (is that the Field House? I forget) is MUCH more limited than the store at the Expo, though.

Congrats on the long run on the treadmill and making it through the movie. Both are quite impressive feats!

Ah, ok. I did not remember seeing one by the bib pickup last year, but it was my first RunDisney event so I don't think I was even thinking about it yet.

There were two RunDisney areas if I remember correctly. One where you pick up your bib and one in the main expo area. Sometimes the bib area will have merchandise after the main expo runs out. It is nice for the runners as the ebay buyers usually don't go into the bib pick up area.

Sorry to hear this and hope that you don't have to make a decision about it, but good that you're thinking about the possibilities now. I know $$'s hard to come by but in the end, it is just money - 20 years from now many would not think twice about the lost dollars. How would you feel missing her service/funeral? Would parts of your family be helped by your support of being there? Would your family want you to go on with your trip that you've planned already? Varied opinions have already been offered so there's no "correct" answer - do what feels right for you so you live with no regrets. Take care. :grouphug:
