Official 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games thread!

It's not like the any country is prohibited from paying its Olympic athletes or backing them up with equipment and facilities and coaches. So who's fault is it when they don't? Some countries don't have nearly enough funds. But that doesn't apply to the United States. Who's fault is it that gold medal winning side by side slalom snowboarder won for Russia and not The United States? Who's fault is it that we didn't identify this guy and make sure he got some backing such that he had to go to Russia to get it. More power to them and him. Obviously, he fell in love with a Russian snowboarder. But maybe if the United States backs him, she moves here and wins her bronze one for us instead of him winning Gold for them.

I swear I have the hardest time getting words into a post reflect what I am really thinking.

We are having a family discussion re: how athletes are treated, not if that helps them win.

In many countries the athletes are paid to train and paid even more if they win. In the US we do have some sponsorship for athletes, but some have to get the funds all my themselves. They are representing the US. My opinion in our family discussion is that while I don't think we should pay for training and getting picked for the Olympics, but if they are chosen to represent us, we should be able to figure out how to get them the funds to get to the Olympics. Gofundme is just a sad thing to have to do if you are deemed Olympic worthy. This is my opinion and was wondering what others thought.

I read your response and if I am wrong with my comprehension I am sorry. Just thought maybe my words were not what I had intended.

My kids just got home from school...I was glad to hear that they let them watch the game. I still remember in 1972 when we watched Canada vs. Russia in class...the school erupted in screaming when they scored.

Congrats to the Canadians. So happy if US couldn't win the gold it is going home with our neighbors who do appreciate their hockey.

Oh ok. I think our organizing committee has enough money to pay to get our athletes there and back again and should. And if it has to come out of the fat cat's pay, so be it.

On the news a few nights ago they were saying what countries pay what to the athlete if they win. Apparently the USA gives 25 grand to anyone winning gold, Canada gives 20, one country gives 250 grand (total medal count is really low for that country). Then there are some that give nothing.

My son was home , but I asked my daughter when she got in, and she said NO, that she was in the middle of a math test, but the class beside her had it on, and her teacher freaked out :confused3 with all the screaming..

Like you I remember ALL the games being played in the gym.. We all wore our colors.. I found it odd..

My street went crazy.. Beeping everywhere.

I found it a hard fought game, and I had tears for the American girls.. I felt for them..

Nothing like seeing it slip from your hands. Apparently Canada wanted it more so good for them. :thumbsup2

And then they turn around and tax them on it :-/

My kids came home from school and were excited. The school had a "wear your Canada clothes day" and did made up Olympic Games all day they had the hockey game on and they said everyone was screaming. They had a blast today.

I admit that I couldn't watch the whole game today. I thought I was going to have a heart attack, so switched over to the figure skating.(and the results there deserve some discussion IMO) A huge congrats to all our ladies who won gold today- both the hockey team and the curlers. And how wonderful for Hailey Wickenheiser to be awarded both a gold medal and the appointment to the IOC!

That is great fun!!!!!!!!!

We had a power outage here that started during the 3rd period in some areas. I was working and unable to watch anything today :(

I'm pretty sure it's the USOC paying the athletes for medals, not the U.S. government. It's income and should be taxed.

Agree with who is paying, disagree that they should be taxed on it. But I already know people feel differently about that.

So cool. They will remember that forever.

I couldn't watch the gold medal women's hockey game at work, but I checked quickly online and saw the US was up 2-0 with about 5 minutes left so I was cautiously optimistic. An hour later I checked again. Holy ***!!!!!

Even though I was spoiled, I caught the replay later on and damn, what a finish!! I didn't know about that empty net goal post shot ahead of time. Excellent job by both teams. Without a doubt the best women's game I ever saw. Congrats to the Maple Leaf women for a great comeback.

This was almost as exciting as the Blackhawks-Bruins Game 6 finish last June.

I hope women's hockey stays as an Olympic event.

Jim

While I love the Olympics, I'm thankful neither of my kids ever did anything close to the level of these athletes. The pressure on them is unreal. The devastation over a silver, one fall making or breaking a performance.....as a parent, I would have had a stroke!

That was my math class doing the screaming...at first I cringed at the noise they were making out of habit, but then I just shut the door and enjoyed their enthusiasm. Luckily none of my neighbours complained :)
