In the 2'nd, still no score. Fast and furious and not so much biff-o as I thought it could have been. Seems like most of the players have focussed on the game.

That's what makes the NHL play-offs great, the potential for multiple ot periods. Makes for some exciting hockey every spring.

For the preliminary round I think a shootout is fine. Maybe even the first game of the medals round. But I hope if the gold medal game is tied, they play straight 20 minute OT periods until someone scores.

Canadian fans might remember: In 1994, did Sweden beat Canada in a shootout or OT for the gold medal?

or in 1998 Nagano when Canada was eliminated by the Czechs, and Ray Bourque (a defenseman) took the final shot instead of Wayne Gretzky.

Damn....I couldn't remember whether it was shootout or OT. So I suppose the same rule is still in effect.

Someone above mentioned the shootout as being a skills competition. I consider it more like a carnival sideshow. Tolerable for "regular season", but not for the finals.

I think the World Cup in soccer used shootouts to determine the 2006 and 1994 champions. A major reason lots of US fans consider soccer to be a bush league sport.
