Official 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games thread!

The security scenario in Sochi is shaping as having a very errie similarity to the storyline of the 1971 Frederick Forsyth novel The Day of the Jackal.

For those not familiar with that book, it's about a plot to assasinate the President of France. The story revolves around a mysterious sniper who has been retained to commit the crime, with his plan being to target the President during a major outdoor public ceremony in Paris. As the saga unfolds, there are increasingly furious attempts by the French security forces to identify and capture the sniper before the date of the ceremony arrives. But when it does and the sniper remains at large, an impenetrable wall of police and military are placed around the ceremony...

...but the sniper still finds a way to breach it.

I think it is more likely that something would happen away from Sochi. With all the security focus there, it would be easier elsewhere.

They are introducing the US' opening ceremony outfits on The Today Show. Love them!!! And... They're made in the US this time!

The sweaters are a little ridiculous. But at least everything is supposedly American made!

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

I hope the rest of the Olympics isn't set up like his "hotel"! Sounds awful.

"Nothing is finished here and there is piles of garbage everywhere. Muddy water is pouring off the mountain and flowing through the streets and the cobblestone pavers are all lifting up or disappearing into sink holes." YIKES.

Beyond interesting blog. Can't believe how much they still have to do and it's just a couple weeks off.

Today I noticed he posted "enough. I've just been told to shut up." Think that's the Russians monitoring the emails, texts, everything that they've said they would be and putting a stop to him telling the world of the negative stuff?

I want one! Sweater, mitten and hat! Love, love, love them! And, thankfully they are made in the USA.
I thought my dd would like the hat and mittens too but for $98 each, no thanks. She's getting the made in China mittens instead.

Yes.

Honestly, I am not the least bit surprised about his dismal report. I know other Olympic venues have had issues, but I don't think it has ever been as bad as people there are saying.

Wow, really? That's nuts! BTW, where did you see them for sale?

Never mind. I opened the link and saw the prices. $600 for a sweater? LOL. I'll admire from afar

Wow, that blog was informative; I've read reports from various news agencies, but it's very different to have it from someone who is actually there on the ground.

We are two weeks away and it seems like very little, if any, progress is going to be made past this point. I just hope for the sake of the athletes that have worked training tirelessly to get here that they can pull it together enough for them to compete safely.

All of my usual pre-Olympic excitement is completely overshadowed by all the negativity.

I agree. Always look forward to the Olympics, particularly the winter variety. I just want the show to go on as usual, with everyone coming together to give their best and have an unforgettable experience for all the right reasons. Sadly I have to admit that it is starting to look like security concerns and inadequate preparations may mar the event. I am honestly surprised Russia hasn't stepped things up more. Quite frankly I have my doubts about the upcoming summer games. I keep hoping the Olympic spirit and ideals will win the day.

Ugh...new threats today online. I'll be honest, if I was a spectator I wouldn't go. I hope this doesn't distract the athletes who've worked so hard to get there and throw them off their game.
