I am an absolute FIEND for the Olympics, both winter and summer...all sports. I will watch just about anything when the Olympics are on and I too find myself using terms that only come around every two years. I can't help it though, combining sports/patriotism/international good will is kind of a perfect combination in my mind.
I am, however, incredibly worried about security during these Olympics and do not think that the situation is under control by any means. Just today 5 people were found murdered in a city near Sochi with suspected ties to terrorism. The areas in southern Russia close to Sochi that form most of the Caucuses region (Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia) and the South Ossetia region in Georgia have long been areas embroiled in conflict and there have been clerics in the area calling for attacks on the games. This area has been deteriorating in stability for quite some time and I hope this doesn't ignite something larger.
The weather has also been pretty mild considering the impending games, the temperatures have routinely been in the 50s and apparently the snowpack is not good, so there may be a lot of snow machines drafted into service.
I am hopeful for a competitive, spirited, safe and festive games; I do not want it to devolve into conflict and I do not want innocent athletes and spectators to be in danger. I am hopeful that Russia sees this for the opportunity it is and has everything under control, but the continued violence in the area leaves me uneasy.
