Official 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games thread!

Is Apollo still in the running for the Olympics? Remember how we would swoon over him here on the DIS? Good times! I watched a little of the trials today. I think it was NBC.
Apolo and J.R. Celski are both hometown boys!

I knew it. Lyndsey Vonn just announced she's out of the games.

Looking forward to the Olympics & hoping the games can go forward in the true spirit of athletic competition, everyone putting their best foot forward & a good time had by all.

So incredibly gratefuly CBC once again has the Canadian broadcast rights back. I've missed their superior coverage of the games.

Just a friendly warning to all y'all, I am the undisputed expert of all matters snowcross and curling & won't tolerate any nonsense smacktalk about the two sports I'm most looking forward to.

I'm sure she's devastated & that is too bad. I have to say that at least she's had her moment in the sun. It's more heartbreaking to me when it happens to Jill and Joe Nobody, even if they didn't realistically present a medal threat. She did get a big bite of the apple already.

Who would talk smack about curling? Its a sport I could actually do! Shuffleboard on ice.

Snowcross has been a favorite ever since Jacobellis lost the gold while she was showboating near the finish line.

Exactly, I have a broom & I know how to use it! Believe it or not, some people actually dare to question some of the fashion choices of some of the world's top athletes in curling!

We generally don't get excited about the big, marque names of the Olympics & have a blast rooting for the people that look like they would make fun neighbors rather than be featured on magazine covers.

Logistics question.......what day is Opening Ceremonies and what time will they be shown here in the US (EST of course)? Will they be live or shown in primetime after the fact?

Looks like opening ceremonies are Fri. Feb 7 & will be broadcast in US delayed for primetime.

Some qualifying runs will be held Feb 6 for some sports.

This is the television schedule:

It appears that most events will be broadcast live (either on television or streaming) and the NBC prime time schedule will be recorded. I am thankful for the options. With DVR I can avoid prime time which, for the most part, will be figure skating, figure skating, screeching figure skating announcers, tears, makeup, glitter and more figure skating.

All events will only be shown in Primetime for NBC...so hours after the fact.

Yet again, the US gets stuck with sucky NBC coverage.

ETA: I see now they'll be showing some stuff during the day. If it is anything like the last Games, the coverage will still stink.

I am an absolute FIEND for the Olympics, both winter and summer...all sports. I will watch just about anything when the Olympics are on and I too find myself using terms that only come around every two years. I can't help it though, combining sports/patriotism/international good will is kind of a perfect combination in my mind.

I am, however, incredibly worried about security during these Olympics and do not think that the situation is under control by any means. Just today 5 people were found murdered in a city near Sochi with suspected ties to terrorism. The areas in southern Russia close to Sochi that form most of the Caucuses region (Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia) and the South Ossetia region in Georgia have long been areas embroiled in conflict and there have been clerics in the area calling for attacks on the games. This area has been deteriorating in stability for quite some time and I hope this doesn't ignite something larger.

The weather has also been pretty mild considering the impending games, the temperatures have routinely been in the 50s and apparently the snowpack is not good, so there may be a lot of snow machines drafted into service.

I am hopeful for a competitive, spirited, safe and festive games; I do not want it to devolve into conflict and I do not want innocent athletes and spectators to be in danger. I am hopeful that Russia sees this for the opportunity it is and has everything under control, but the continued violence in the area leaves me uneasy.

Things looking MIGHTY tense in Russia lately. I'm praying for the safety of everyone.

I'm getting very anxious about the security. I want to think - it's the Olympics! They "have" to have it under control! But things are just pretty scary in that region :-(

That being said, I love the Olympics! I am fascinated with Curling! My great uncle used to have a good sized shuffle board type table. The stones were puck like and you would add some sand to the table top to make the pucks go smoother when you released them down the table. It looks so silly to me - slide down, sweepers, shuffle board, but I enjoy armchair coaching and watching it :-)

I also enjoy speed skating (short track? is that where the teams have multi members?), ski jumping, and I have no idea what it's called, but the skier goes down a hill, flies off a jump, twists, turns, checks out their own backside, and tries to land upright :-)

Who else is excited for the Jamaican Bobsled Team?? :thumbsup2
Can you say COOL RUNNINGS????

I have found my people!! Can't believe I didn't see this thread until now.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Olympics. I'll watch it all.

I really like figure skating and the skiing.

(Speaking of figure skating, did anyone else see the "30 for 30" on ESPN about Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan?? HOT MESS.)
