Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

for anyone else doing a fall marathon... What can or are you guys doing to prevent burn out? I did the marathon in January but now they're really close together and I'm not so sure how to adjust my training and keep myself from getting totally burnt out. With the holidays coming my desire to run diminishes each time White Christmas is on TV.

I'm trying to run different routes, run at different times of day, change up music I run to, and trying to think of different things while I'm running. Sometimes it works, sometimes I'm still a little too fried. :)

I'm running marathons 10/12 and 11/3. I haven't had burnout so far, but I am definitely anticipating some issues in November when it gets really cold. I just keep having to remind myself that Dopey is HARD and I don't want to be underprepared.

My bad....

Mapmyrun has revised a few things and did not realize that the old way of resetting privcacy setting no longer worked.

Isn't it fun to try keeping up with constantly changing rules of technology?

I am getting ready for the Dopey Challenge also and have thought a lot about how to avoid burnout. I have found that varying my runs keeps things more interesting. One day a week I do a short, fast interval run (the next week I do hill work). The next day I will do an easy 6 miles. The third run is a marathon pace medium run of 10-12 miles. Finally, come the long, slow run. I also go to the gym and cross train on the bicycle once a week.

Do something different. Swimming, yoga, biking, spinning - basically any other activity that isn't running. Your body and your mind will appreciate something other than running.

To avoid burnout I have added some Half Marathons as training runs to my schedule. It keeps the weekends fun, and helps me stay motivated!

Holy cow!! You are a beast! Rock on

For some reason, seeing this official picture just made it a little more real to me.

I like the ribbons though. I think that they could have done something a little more WOW with the Dopey medal though. Yes last years Mickey was awesome...and 2012 DD half was awesome too, very colorful.

I think that they made the medals less ornate so that they could do anniversary medals like last year's Marathon medal. If they keep making them more ornate each year, they will never be able to stop, if that makes sense. On non-anniversary years, I am guessing they will keep them more low key.

Just about to finish up my first 4 day stretch with mileage higher than Dopey. So excited for January!!!

For $500 they need to be more ornate each year.

The Ironman is funny. It hurts way less then a stand alone marathon. Everyone ive talked to who had done both had agreed. We think its because by the time you get around to the marathon in an Ironman, you can't push as hard as a standalone marathon, less pounding. This should be a great training schedule for Dopey. Nothing too close or too hard. Great cross training.
Have fun in imfl. Its a really great time.

Getting back into the habit of long runs, but it's amazing how much of that you lose in a few months. Hopefully, it should be clicking back into place by the end of this month though.

Agree - I break my training into three phases:

Speed training
Distance training
Recovery training

The hardest segment for me to get back into is the distance training, but if I do too much distance training with my speed work, I end up injured. This is just what works for me, so I accept the down sides.
