Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

I know I would rather give it rest than push it as the other poster wrote. Having said that, I remember the idea of me even doing a half marathon at one point was something I thought I couldn't do. My feet would be sore which caused other soreness and lower back pain...geeze...it was depressing. This was even on a treadmill! It did end up being my shoes were totally wrong for me but I didn't know it.
It will be interesting to read what others say and if they have been down this road before.
As for sneakers, I am wearing the Adidas boost...I love shoes that are like pillows and these are good.
Sometimes my right knee bothers me to a point where I limp! Though last year during the whole Goofy challenge it didn't bother me at all..strange.

I hope whatever it is you are experiencing is something as simple as changing shoes...but if it were me I really wouldn't push it.

Thanks for the resting and shoe advice. I'm resting my legs, and after some more rest, I will try to find a running store that carries my size to see if I can get re-fit. Hopefully that will help avoid reinjury!

Rounded out my training with 64 miles this past week. Ready to run, I hope.

Great work! My 100% weeks are 60 miles, and I just finished my last one, too.

Question: What are you doing (long run distance, and total mileage) for the next two weeks? I have 51 miles for this week and 26 for the following. A couple of Dopey training plans call for long runs of 12 and then 8, with overall low mileage for the next two weeks. I am curious to know if others are doing a 2 or 1 week taper, and not 3.

Thanks!

My aim is 45 and 35, and then a short run on the Tuesday I land in Orlando. Because it's a 2 and a half week taper, it's so complicated.

TAPER TIME!

Had the last week of long running. It was a beautiful 55 degrees Wednesday, so I did an extra 6 miler. Then the cold moved in and had to shift inside on a track for the 3 and 6 mile runs. Then a cold 10 miles on Saturday, and of course the snow and zero degree temps showed up Sunday morning. Ended up getting the 22 mile run in, but probably walked about half a mile towards the end.

Hope everyone getting their last long runs in get them done injury free. Have a Dopey Christmas!

Got my longest run since before Thanksgiving in. I'm still hurt, but got through 4.75 miles as a continuous run, and could have kept going. Hope to get in a 6 miler in a couple of days, and then maybe a couple of 8 milers next week. I'll be going into it severely undertrained, but being injured since before Thanksgiving cut out a lot of long runs.

Sorry about the injury, and good that it's getting better!

Been following this thread for some time now. Finally decided to stop reading only and jump in.
I did the Goofy last year. 1st Disney run, 6th Full and about 10th half. I loved it.
I'm in corral G.
Did my 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 miler last weekend. 70 plus degrees here in TN. Great prep for Disney.
Thanks for all the advice I have been reading about.

Welcome aboard DD. :thumbsup2

Sounds like you're ready to go and have some fun. Hopefully the temperatures will be a bit lower than your training temps., for everybody's sake.

haha, seriously! let's have some 40s. maaaaaybe 50s just for betsy because she likes it a bit warmer. but i'd prefer for it to be 70s only later in the day and/or after the challenge is over and my real vacation begins :)

Do we get 2 bibs for Dopey? I read one for 5K and 10K, another for 1/2 and full but the official info sounds like only one bib for all the races.

Feeling better about my chances. Still not recovered, but still getting better. Have finally managed a six mile continuous run, which means that I should be able to handle the half with walk breaks. Still hoping to get in a couple more 6-8 mile runs between now and marathon weekend, but fully aware that these are more to bolster my confidence than having any real training benefit.

As my wife told me earlier this week - I signed up for these races. Failure is not an option.

I know I should be more worried about the running but honestly, the biggest problem I faced was "how am I going to make and pack 4 costumes?" I should be freaking out about this more than I am but... I am surprisingly blase about the whole thing. It's like I'm on some kind of tranquilizer or something.

There is seriously an art to packing! I just don't remember it but I am going to start putting things together tomorrow just to figure it out and make sure I take everything.
I have decided to leave my costumes behind...like the Snow white because I only bought it (for 7 dollars) for Disney races...and if it doesn't fit on the return it doesn't go.
You have to leave space for sweatshirts and whatever else you buy down there.
Know that there will probably be items...such as toss away sweatshirts that you will wear until the race starts - they will take up room on the way down but you wont be taking them back with you.

I'm also feeling the "failure is not an option" going through my mind. I haven't run in a week. Actually, I haven't attempted to run in a week and it's been more like two since I have actually run. My calf spasms seem slightly better with lots of heat, massage and stretching, but I'm afraid to even attempt a test run. I wonder if it's better to continue heat, massage and stretching and try to avoid making the problem worse, hoping to be in less pain for Dopey. If I have to tape and truss myself to death, I desperately want those medals! We've worked too hard for too many months and have spent too much money not to feel that way.

Many of us are in that same boat. About two weeks ago I did 23.2 miles on the treadmill and did a few miles the days following and sadly nothing since. I ended up coming down with something...headache and sinus problems...its a norm for me when weather changes...and my headaches can turn to migranes so I have to be careful. My big goal was to do 13 miles this past Sunday which never happened. I still feel terribly under the weather...second time this has happened to me since November. I am prone to this I guess...however I would rather deal with it now then in January.
In the meantime the goal is to do another 13 miles tomorrow I hope!

My friend is doing the Goofy and she is getting scared...she feels she isn't even doing close to what she wanted to do..for various reasons.

So many of us are in the same boat.

Here is the thing..safety is number one...the goal is to finish in an upright position injury free.

I think we will all be fine.
